It is our pleasure to deliver your community newspaper“ “

Thirty years after start-ing up, the Parksville Qualicum Beach News is still the mid-Island’s happening
community newspaper — a trend that we started way back in 1982 with the help of some very supportive advertisers and individuals.
Three decades ago, the paper was created to fill the void when the Parksville Progress stopped publication. It all started as the Parksville Advertiser in 1982, began by Roy Linder, with the backing up of-and-coming busi-nessmen, Ken Schley, John Bri-uolo and Noel Hayward.
They are the trio behind Qua-licum — and now Quality — Foods in Qualicum Beach. Their commitment to being the an-chor advertiser in the fledgeling newspaper helped spur on the decision to start the publication.
“They commanded a big fol-lowing and brought a big reader-ship to the paper,” said Linder in THE NEWS’ 10th anniversary edi-tion in 1992. “And they still do today.”
How right he was — and still is some 30 years later.
THE NEWS, now owned by
Black Press, grew, and so did Qualicum Foods — and in a very big way.
Today, that company owns multiple grocery stores on Van-couver Island and the Sunshine Coast. They have won countless
awards for both their service and technological innovation.
Quality Foods, as the larger company is now known, cel-ebrated its 30th anniversary a little earlier this year, but their history here is inexorably tied to
that of THE NEWS.Once called the News-Adver-
tiser, over the first 10 years of publishing, the Advertiser was dropped and the community paper has been known as THE NEWS ever since. It was named
the province’s top paper in its category for the first time in 1986, and would win that same award again and again (most recently in 2010). This year, THE NEWS was graded second-best in B.C. and won a blue ribbon in the annual national community newspapers competition.
This commitment to excel-lence translates into a commu-nity newspaper that tries its best to serve its readers and help im-prove the community in which it operates.
This level of service to the community as a whole is more than echoed by our anchor ad-vertiser (as well as many others who support this paper through advertising).
Quality Foods, it must be noted, has been a huge booster of the area over the years, and its owners have been front-and-centre in many events and causes since they opened their doors 30 years ago.
The future for THE NEWS looks bright, with continued support from the community as a whole — and carrying with it a com-mitment to bring its readers the stories from the area that keep them informed and entertained.
