Augmented Reality: The Real Experience
Augmented Reality. What is it? How is it relevant to education and research?
Want to know more?
This 90 minute session is an opportunity to find out more about augmented
reality:
● An overview to the many ways it is starting to be used across society by
companies such as IKEA, the BBC
● Practical educational examples from libraries and subject disciplines.
● Demonstrations including 3D-dinosaurs, interactive video, fieldwork and
medical simulation.
● Get hands-on and create your own augmented reality content!
What is Augmented Reality?
Augmented Reality is the real-time overlaying of digital
content onto reality, viewed through a device such as a
mobile phone, tablet or headset.

What is Augmented Reality?
Passive / Consumption
Reality is augmented but still viewed passively
What is Augmented Reality?
Active / Engaging
Encourages interaction with the augmented content or
enables creation of additional content then and there
Your Experience
Who’s used / encountered augmented reality?
Who’s created augmented reality?

The iPad [was used] to localize the two tumors in the liver. It was very
exciting as it was one of the first operations to be carried out in this
way within Germany.
Developed by Fraunhofer MEVIS in Bremen, this procedure helps
locate critical structures such as tumors and vessels and is expected
to improve the quality of transferring pre-operational resection plans
into actual surgery, according to Bianka Hofmann from the institute.

Special Collections using Augmented Reality to Enhance Learning and Teaching (SCARLET)
SCARLET addresses one of the principal obstacles to the use of Special Collections in
teaching and learning -- the fact that students must consult rare books, manuscripts and
archives within the controlled conditions of library study rooms. The material is isolated from
the secondary, supporting materials and the growing mass of related digital assets. This is an
alien experience for students familiar with an information-rich, connected wireless world, and
is a barrier to their use of Special Collections.
The SCARLET project will provide a model that other Special Collections libraries can follow,
making these resources accessible for research, teaching and learning.

Why consider augmented reality?
● Enable deeper understanding:○ Learn more about the item through extended
information
○ Include direct links to further resources in context
● Connect knowledge:○ Enable links between different objects and areas by
using orientation hunt
● Provide direct in-context access to resources
that are protected or changed by history
Things to Consider
1. What benefit will it bring to the learning
experience?
2. How will it integrate into other learning
activity?
3. What resources will you use:a. Stock existing 3D-model or image?
b. Create your own / use your own content
4. Do you have a team or support to enable
creation?
5. What platform or device will you target?
Aurasma
● Can create content all on ipad (create on single
device)
● Free
● Works well
● Multi platform
● Can use desktop app for further creation. Options to
create own app and branding
