Reality-Virtuality Continuum

Augmented Reality is the art of superimposing computer generated content over a live view of the world.

Augmented reality is the integration of digital information with live video or the user's environment in real time.

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality can be explained as the generation of a composite view for the user that is the combination, in real time, of a real scene viewed by the user, via a camera for example, and a virtual scene generated by the computer, therefore augmenting the scene with additional information.

Augmented Reality - Reborn

Until 1999, AR remained very much a toy of the scientist

Taking Augmented Reality to the masses was practically impossible

Augmented Reality - Reborn

In 1999, Hirokazu Kato of the Nara Institute of Science and Technology released the ARToolKit to the open source community.

Although the smartphone was yet to be invented, it was what allowed a simple, handheld device with a camera and an internet connection to bring AR to the masses.

So what’s with all the recent hype?

The sudden increase in public interest is after the invention of Smartphones and the apps that were developed for smartphones

Mobilizy was among the pioneers to develop apps allowing Android users to view the world through their mobile phone cameras and see augmentations on the screen of points of interest nearby.

Once ARToolkit was ported to Adobe Flash, the journey reaches where we are today with AR possible through the desktop browser and your webcam as well.

Types of Augmented Reality

GPS and Compass Technology:

Found in smartphones and tablets Uses devices' GPS, compass

features and high-speed wireless networks Allows more complex applications of Augmented Reality.

Main Attraction:

Limitation:

Provides useful local web-content information and added services in 2D format at the geo-location of the user

Fairly imprecise due to current inaccuracy of the GPS technology

Types of Augmented Reality

Marker Based

Marker-based AR uses a camera and a visual marker to determine the center, orientation, and range of its spherical coordinate system.

Most of the time, the applications using markers are based on open source technology.

ARToolkit is the first fully-featured toolkit for marker-based AR

It has the advantage to be easily affordable but sometimes it is not supported and fairly weak

Total Immersion provides the world’s most widely used commercial augmented reality platform.

Types of Augmented Reality

Marker Less Tracking

This is currently one of the best technology for tracking

It performs active tracking and recognition of real environment on any type of support without using special placed markers.

Allows more complex applications of Augmented Reality.

SixthSense – Augmented Reality System

The device works by using the camera and mirror to examine the surrounding world

Feeds the image to the phone which processes the image, gathers GPS coordinates and pulls data from the Internet and then projects information from the projector onto the surface in front of the user, whether it's a wrist, a wall, or even a person.

Future of Augmented Reality

Better visualization of products by scanning bar codes, QR codes or pure object recognition.

Learning tool in schools.

City planning and architecture.
