Dr. Christina White, the Global Chair and Director of the National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenges Scholars and the K12Partners Program, recently accepted the School of Engineering’s (SoE) invitation to attend the Engineering Fair and eurecaconference. During her short eventful stay, Dr. White was appointed as the assessor for the Engineering Fair projects and eurecapresentations, and she was also one of the esteemed keynote speakers for the eureca conference. She highlighted the high qualityof the SEO-conducted projects, and she expressed that she was impressed with the presentation skills of the students.

Moreover, Dr. White conducted an excellent workshop on Interdisciplinary Approaches to Addressing the Grand Challenges whichwas well-received by the Taylor’s Grand Challenge Scholar Programme (TGCSP) mentors and scholars who attended. She joined theTGCSP Town Hall meeting, where five GC scholars presented their journey to achieve their GC program outcomes. Dr. White applaudedthe creative and sustainable projects carried out by the scholars and found them very inspiring.

The visit by Dr. White was certainly memorable, and the school looks forward to welcoming her once again in the upcomingEngineering Fair and eureca in December 2016!

Monash University Sunway Students with TRT members

Ir Associate Prof. Dr. Leong Wai Yie and Dr. Siow Chun Lin attended the IEM Membership Drive and Promotion BrainstormingSession on July 30, 2016 at Shah’s Village Hotel. During the training, various promotion strategies and issues were discussed toenhance IEM membership. The brainstorming session and membership drive would also help to build a broad support base andincrease volunteers who are willing to help throughout the year. Outgoing volunteers are important to back-to-university eventsand corporate initiatives. Volunteers who recruit members and explain the membership benefits will definitely help ensure thesuccess of the membership drive.

Shell Eco Marathon is a competition that emphasizesmaximum efficiency, in which students build fuel-efficientcars that are judged by their maximum travelling distancewith only one liter of fuel. Cars are driven at a set speedaround a circuit with fixed number of laps. On August 18,a team from the Monash University Sunway campus, met the Taylor’s Racing Team offering some guidance andadvice on chassis design. As the car is raced at top speeds, rigid yet ergonomically-designed chassis are among thevital factors considered in the design stage. Hence, theMonash team intended to use the Formula Society ofAutomotive Engineers rules when in the design stage. The fruitful discussion further strengthened the bondbetween neighboring universities.

Dr. Christina White’s Visit

18JULY

A total of 28 students from the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, accompanied by Professor Volker Hessel, came to the School of Engineering for a one-day visit. The visit was part of their one-week study tour in Malaysia. The studentswere mainly undergraduates and postgraduates from the Chemical Engineering Department. During their visit, the studentslearned about the project-based education CDIO tool offered in SOE. They were introduced to the CDIO in a classroom-style settingand received the opportunity to apply these tools during a workshop conducted by some of the CDIO lecturers in SOE.

The visitors were extremely impressed with the beauty of the campus, the favorable learning environment, and the facilities. Theyalso appreciated the importance of project-based learning in the study of engineering and mentioned that they would use someof the tools they learned during their visit on their future projects.
