Presidents Report Let’s think about racing in the future. Here is how I see it. 10 years from now: Because of a shortage of workers, everything will be controlled from the Steward’s tower, cameras in every corner with warning lights for the drivers ie. Green, Blue, Yellow and Red, Debris. Will it work? Your guess is just as good as mine. One person makes all the decisions – works all right as long as you like every driver and personal reasons do not come into it. 20 years from now: All the cars will have a mandatory box installed, so if the driver does not obey the rules, the car will be automatically ordered to the Pits NOW, thus solving major problems. Is it going to work? No because for years as soon as the rules come out, the major teams are looking for loop holes in order to gain an advantage. 30 years from now: Each team will be sitting in their office with a big screen. No experienced drivers, just a computer whiz kid driving the car by computer. Entry fee will be cut (whiz kids don’t need much money) - thus making racing affordable for everyone. So my advice to corner marshals is – work as many races as you can to enjoy the good old days, getting soaked to the skin when it rains, or burned to a crisp when it is hot, because soon you will not have the chance to work 14 hours a day for a wonderful lunch, ha ha ha. If you want to see if my predictions come true, stick around for 30 years and talk to the Prez. Any comments? Send them to the Editor to share with everyone.

British Columbia Historic Motor Races Since 1981 the British Columbia Historic Motor Races have

grown to become the largest vintage racing event in Western

Canada and one of the largest in the Pacific Northwest.

For 2014, the popular formula cars will race for the

Westwood Cup as part of the theme of the Hagerty

Formula Festival, and there will also be a celebration of the

arrival of Japanese sports cars some fifty years ago. Check the event website: www.bchmr.ca for the latest info.

Westwood Reunion Barbeque We had so much fun at the Westwood50 celebration a few years ago that we have made the Westwood Reunion an annual event. The Westwood Reunion is a re-creation of the legendary Saturday night barbeques held for years in the Westwood Clubhouse. The Westwood barbeques were hosted by the Mr. Mike’s Steak House chain owned at the time by racer Bob Constabaris. Bob is gone now but his two elves Ed Clements and Gio Coletta are still very much with us and they are hosting the event for all Westwood veterans and anyone else who is interested BYOB: There is a liquor store that serves all beverages in the shopping centre across the highway from the track (located in the cinema building in the northwest corner of the site). Admission by donation ($12 / person suggested) to cover expenses; please and thank you.

Saturday, August 17 - 5:00 pm - Happy Hour

5:30 pm - Dinner served The Traditional Annual VRCBC BCHMR Dinner One of the highlights of the BCHMR is the traditional Dinner that features entertainment, awards and other high jinks. The Dinner will be held in the large tents located at the very West end of the Paddock. Of course, there will be the usual ‘hard core racer’ door prizes!

Local artist, motorsports enthusiast and long time BCHMR supporter Billy Richards (better

known to everybody as ‘Billy R’) has really captured the fun-focussed spirit of the BCHMR and

Vintage racing in general with his poster design for 2014.

As always, Billy R has generated a lot of discussion among local Vintage racing enthusiasts and

Turn Workers about which of our VRCBC ‘hero’ racers he has used for inspiration. The yellow

Camaro and red Mini Cooper S are pretty easy guesses, and there a couple of

possible candidates for the Bimmer. What do you think about the others?

Glenn Nixon on top of TCB class at Road America Round 8 of the

Pirelli World Challenge Glenn Nixon, of Mission, British Columbia, have scored a win in Round 8 of the Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car B the Cadillac Grand Prix at Road America driving No. 58 Mini Cooper A pair of first-time drivers in the TCB class contended for the win. Ultimately it was Nixon, in the No. 58 Racing.ca/LaptopScreen.com/Nixon Prosports Mini Cooper who held off Ryan Reed, of Concord, N.C. in the No. 12 American Diabetes Association/Lilly Diabetes/American Honda Honda Fit for Garrett Racing/Drive4Diabetes. Nixon and Reed exchanged the lead several times before Nixon prevailed. “It was quite the race for sure. Holding off Ryan was difficult, but it worked out pretty good,” said Nixon. “It was fun; I’d been here almost 20 years ago in a formula car. It’s a great result and want to thank Andrei (Kisel) for this opportunity.” One of Reed’s passes for the lead awarded him the Cadillac CTS-V Move of the Race. Although he was second, Reed was very satisfied with his first race in the series. He’ll race in Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the circuit, as well. “I wanted the win! I wanted to show my competitors some respect, and they deserve it because I think this is a great series,” Reed said. “We were pretty close in practice, Johan (Schwartz) told me do what I needed to do. It took a few laps to get the balance right after being in the Nationwide car all day.” In third was Paul Holton, of Tallahassee, Fla. in the No. 65 Radium/TRUECar/Lucas Oil Honda Fit for his second podium of the day. Holton started fourth and had a front row seat to both the lead battle and a three-car incident that occurred off Turn 5 on the opening lap. “There was a crazy cluster in Turn 5 but we made it through. I don’t know how many times positions changed hands,” said Holton. Palmer, of San Diego, Calif., recovered to fourth after being caught up with two other cars in the first lap, Turn 5 fracas, in the No. 37 MINI USA/Mobil 1/Flying L Racing/ThePainter’sFriend.com/Discount Tire Mini Cooper. In fifth for his second top-five finish of the day was Michael Ashby, of Buffalo, Minn., in the No. 16 Morrie’s Mazda Motorsports Mazda 2.

FAQ Who is behind Area 27? Area 27 was founded in 2013 by Trevor Seibert, Jacques Villeneuve, Bill Drossos, and David King.

When will the track open? Our target opening date for the track is summer of 2015, providing we are able to obtain all required approvals.

When will you start construction on the track? Our intention is to have preliminary earthworks commence in the fall of 2014. It should take 6-8 months to complete phase 1.

How long will the track be? The track length is approximately 4.9km, or 3 miles.

You mentioned the track as Phase 1. What are the other phases? As mentioned, Phase 1 is comprised of the track, a driving academy, karting centre, access roads, fencing and necessary infrastructure. Phase 2 includes construction of commercial buildings like on-site vehicle service, members clubhouse, on-site vehicle storage, and the karting center building. Phase 3 planning involves future condominium-style arrive and drive suites. Phase 4 will be for additional event related infrastructure such as grand stands, pit garages, and timing, and scoring/media tower type buildings.

Will the track have multiple configurations? The track features a high and low speed configuration, and is designed to run counter clockwise.

Is Area 27 able to host organized motorsport events? Yes, the track will be constructed to FIA level 2 standards. Our goal is to host vintage racing, sports cars, motorcycle racing, grassroots motorsports, and car shows.

Vancouver to explore bid for Formula E electric car race By Emily Jackson Metro

Get ready to rev those quiet engines, folks. The one-day FIA Formula E Championship electric car race has a shot at using Vancouver’s streets as a racetrack after city council voted unanimously Tuesday to look for future opportunities and partners to host the event. The race would be a chance for Vancouver to highlight its environmental goals and make electric cars “sexy,” councillors said in support of NPA Coun. Elizabeth Ball’s motion.

.

Plus, the event would be shorter, quieter and greener than the Molson Indy, the popular but controversial race that called the city home for 15 years until 2004, Ball said. That series was ultimately cancelled because of the Olympic Village development and an inability to attract long-term sponsors. Condo dwellers in the Concord Pacific developments along False Creek weren’t fans of the noise or weeklong road closures, either. The inaugural Formula E series will take place in 10 cities including London and Beijing between fall 2014 and spring 2015. A delegation from the FIA visited Vancouver to see check out potential routes (Stanley Park was ruled out as too narrow), but didn’t select the city for its first year of operations, deputy city manager Sadhu Johnston said. But the city will work with any organization that’s willing to put on the event to scout potential paths and enable the race, Johnston said. Representatives from the Sports Car Club of B.C. and the Confederation of Autosport Car Clubs (CACC) were on hand to support a bid for the event. “I’ve been a fossil fuel racer for decades, and I’m ready to embrace this change, this new technology,” said Ray Stec, track operations chair of the CACC. “This is the future.” Stec believes there’s broad support for an electric car race in Vancouver to “fill the hole” left by the Molson Indy. Rob Tarzwell, a physician who has been involved in high performance driving for a decade, expressed excitement for a race without the “guilty side of burning a lot of gas.” “We want to be the greenest city in the world,” he said. “That cannot happen without electric vehicles.”

Excerpts from RMP website: http://www.rockyviewmotorsports.com/

WELCOME TO ROCKYVIEW

MOTORSPORTS PARK Calgary has more auto enthusiasts per capita than any other major North American city. With the closing of Calgary’s Race City there is no local venue to enjoy the sport of auto racing. Rockyview Motorsports Park (RMP) will put Calgary and area on the world motor-sports map!

THE PROJECT Rockyview Motorsports Park will encompass approximately 640 acres and will be located just north east

of Airdrie. RMP will be a privately owned, world-class facility for motor enthusiasts of all kinds located

1/2 mile north east of Airdrie. At the heart of the project will be a European-style driving course designed by internationally renowned German designer TILKE GmbH. The road course is initially expected to be 4.0 km in length with the potential to become 5.3 km. This challenging road course will make best use of the existing land contours resulting in exciting elevation change and corners, off-camber turns and an extended straight. RMP will have a track that will challenge even the most experienced driver. While the driving course will serve as the heart and economic engine of the facility, RMP will be so much more than your average race track. Encompassed in the phased proposal are the following: o One-of-a-kind driving centre o Calgary Police Service training centre o Skills pad o Indoor/outdoor kart facility o Olds College research project to enhance wetlands and improve agriculture o Auto oriented services o Car condos o Recreational facilities
