After excavating over 364,747 cubic feet of rock to allow for the building to extend 74 feet underground, a soil nail wall was built to hold back the earth along its buried faces. To create a perfect view for every audience member, the structure needed to span over 275 feet while supporting a green roof. To accomplish this, twenty-five feet deep trusses were installed to transfer the weight of the green roof to the earth below. Some of the soil and gravel depths are up to 28 inches. To limit potential conflicts, the roof structure was built on the ground and then lifted into place using a strand jack system. Each cycle raised the roof 20” in about two minutes. After each cycle, measurements were recorded to confirm if the roof was level. The roof had to be lifted approximately 8’ above its’ resting location to allow for the columns to be tipped up underneath the structure. Deep Space contained a unique set of structural challenges. After excavating over 364,747 cubic feet of rock to allow for the building to extend 74 feet underground, a soil nail wall was built to hold back the earth along its buried faces. To create a perfect view for every audience member, the structure needed to span over 275 feet while supporting a green roof. To accomplish this, twenty-five feet deep trusses were installed to transfer the weight of the green roof to the earth below. Some of the soil and gravel depths are up to 28 inches. To limit potential conflicts, the roof structure was built on the ground and then lifted into place using a strand jack system. The roof was lifted approximately 60 ft to allow for two permanent roof support columns to be installed. Using over 1000 bolts, the perimeter was bolted to the backspan structural system.
