All fall sports have come to and end ex-cept for a few football remnants. Winter is coming and the month’s MSR will get you fully prepared for the five different winter sports: Girls’ and boys’ basketball, swim-ming, wabash, and gymnastics.

You will also find a list of Sectional champs, following up the county champs from September’s MSR.

This month’s feature focuses on a Mont-gomery County volleyball player/ singer who will be releasing songs that she recent-ly recorded in Nashville!

She’s sung since she could re-member. She’s played guitar since she was 10. She’s recorded since she was 14. A 16-year-old Montgomery County sports player and music enthusiast does it all: volleyball, basketball, track . . . and recording with a Nashville studio. Her name is Kasey Burton and she is a junior at Southmont. Burton is in her last few weeks of her volleyball season, but that’s not all she has done. She travelled to Nashville for a week recently to record four songs with a label she signed with this past year: Sweet-song Nashville. She may have had to miss a few

volleyball games but her new songs will be coming soon to iTunes and the world. Burton has to balance school, sports, and music as a junior in high school. “It’s kind of hard but it’s awe-some at the same time,” Burton explained. Her and her family are working with Sweetsong right now to make sure she has a social media and on-line presence before the songs are released. It’s an act of juggling but her producer said she needs to be able to do normal teenager things. “We asked him if I’d still be able to do sports and all this and he was like, ‘Yeah, we want you to be a normal teenager and still do all the stuff that you want to do,’” Burton said.

It all started at a 7th grade camp. Burton had been to the camp the previous year but the second time was the charm. “I performed one of my own songs at the camp and that’s what made them notice me,” she ex-plained. She performed a song she had written at 14 years old: “Read Me.” A label called SCP was at the camp and they signed her. “They really helped me want it more,” Burton said. She signed with the label, re-leased a fundraising five-acoustic EP, and started on her full album as she entered high school. The full al-bum, entitled “Kasey Burton” came out the summer of 2014 with the first track being “Read Me.” There

are nine other songs on the album with songs like “American Dream” and “Never Let You Go.” Other than recording music, she has been able to perform at places like House of Blues in Chicago. She sang there after she won a contest. “Besides House of Blues, one of my favorite performances was when we were down in Tennessee for spring break and I got to per-form at Bluebird Café,” Burton said. “In there, it’s all quiet and all eyes are on you and it’s so awe-some.” Burton has been singing since she was little and sings with her church choir. She said her dad,

sister, and Hannah Montana were a big part of her musical enjoyment. “Hannah Montana was a favorite of mine. I’ll be honest and give her props. But my dad and my sister were always really musical.” “My dad always knew I wanted to do something with music cause I would talk about it with him when I was little. He made a deal with me when I was 10 years old that if I learned to play guitar in a year, by the time we went to Florida, he’d take me to Disney World, and so I did. And we went to Disney World and it was awesome.” She said a guy at church taught her to play guitar and now many of her songs are inspired by just picking on her guitar. Other times, are just random things. “A lot of times it will just be

when I am on my guitar and it will be the melody first and then I will put random lyrics together,” Bur-ton said. “Sometimes it will just be somebody says something and I’ll just be like, ‘Hey, that’s a good idea. I like that.’ or ‘That’d be good for a song.’” And then other times, there are even more inspirational origins. Burton said the weirdest place she has thought of a song is in the shower. Singing may have been inspired by Hannah Montana but the writ-ing process was inspired by Taylor Swift. “She was definitely the one that really got me into the musical writ-ing process. I love how she writes all of her songs.” Burton also writes all her songs

and was most inspired by Tay-lor Swift’s “Red” album. Writing has just been another process that Burton has been able to learn in the past few years. She said the best part about her musical career has been learning all these processes. “My favorite part would have to be seeing how everything progress-es,” she said. Another part of that progress is maintaining her normal life with three sports and school work. She had to miss a week of volleyball to head down to Nashville but Coach Kristin Charles said that is a part of the job. “One of my big keys with coaching that’s always been im-portant to me is life skills,” Charles said. “I think time management is a huge one. You get out of doing

high school sports and then when you add something like a budding singing career, I think that really helps with the time management and learning to prioritize.” Charles added that her other sports help with her athleticism and competitiveness. Burton’s favorite part about volleyball is getting a kill, ‘hustle’ balls (“when you get a ball up that nobody ever expected that you’d be able to get up,”) and the team aspect. Burton just finished her volley-ball season after a sectional loss to Cloverdale but will jump right in to the basketball season starting this Saturday. Charles said her 7th-grade daughter is a huge fan of Bur-

tons and knows all of her songs. She added that she hasn’t known any sports player at South to be involved with music like Burton has been.
