TEAM MARCH / APRIL 2010

TRACK 1: IntroductionJames: TEAM March / April 2010.Nicky: Welcome to TEAM Radio! I’m Nicky ...James: ... and I’m James.Nicky: On today’s show, we’re talking about a really difficult sport – the heptathlon.James: And then we’re discussing rules. We want to know about your rules at home. What are youallowed to do and what aren’t you allowed to do? Send us your texts now!Nicky: And we’ve got a young actor with us in the studio.James: And two teens are telling us about a scary moment ...Nicky: What scary moment, James? James: The moment they open the envelope ... with their exam results!Nicky: Oh, yes! That is a scary moment!James: Let’s start the show.

TRACK 2: SportJames: For this month’s Sport, our reporter, Jake, is at a North London athletics club. Hi, Jake!Jake: Hi, James. Yes, I’m at the running track on Hampstead Heath. I’m talking to four members of theathletics club - Connor, Oliver, Katie and Ellie. Hi, guys!Teens: Hi, Jake.Jake: So, guys, what are your best events? Connor, let’s start with you.Connor: Running! I love running the 200 metres and the 800 metres.Jake: Phew! You must be very fit! Oliver, what about you? What’s your best event?Oliver: Shot put. I love throwing things and I’ve got quite strong arms for my age. I like javelin, too.Jake: So, we’ve got a runner and a thrower. Katie, you’re tall. What are you good at?Katie: High jump. That’s my top sport.Jake: Of course! And Ellie, do you do the high jump like Katie?Ellie: Well, I do jump, but I jump hurdles. Hurdles is running and jumping at the same time.

Jake: Fantastic! But there’s one event where you have to be good at all those sports – running, throwingand jumping - the heptathlon! Did you watch Jessica Ennis win the heptathlon at the WorldChampionships in Berlin?Teens: Yeah! Way to go, Jess! It was amazing!Jake: Thanks, guys, and we’ll watch out for you at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Back to the studio.James: Thanks, Jake.Nicky: Aren’t there seven events in a heptathlon? They only mentioned six.James: Mm. Take a look at the article about Jessica Ennis on page 6 of this month’s TEAM. You can findthe missing sport there.

TRACK 3: ScreenNicky: I love reading about stars like Zac Efron and Emma Watson in gossip magazines.James: They’re always going to amazing parties and film previews, aren’t they? Lucky them!Nicky: Well, you might think that ... but actually, some young actors have ‘rules’ from their film studios. There are lots of things they’re not allowed to do. Zac Efron isn’t allowed to kiss his girlfriend in public.James: And Robert Pattinson got into trouble when he had his hair cut!Nicky: We wanted to know: What are your rules? Here’s a text from Evan in Watford. Evan says, “I haveto stay at home on weekday evenings! I’m 16. Can you believe it?”James: You’re not the only one, Evan. Emma Watson wasn’t allowed to go to the MySpace party on her18th birthday! Here’s another text. It’s from Lauren, in Newcastle. She says: “My mum tries to controlwhat I wear. I’m not allowed to wear heels that are too high or skirts that are too short!”Nicky: I’ve got another text. John from Cardiff says, “I want to get my ear pierced. But my dad says I’mnot allowed to. I have to wait until I’m 18.”James: I remember when I was 16 – I wanted a tattoo. My parents wouldn’t let me have one. I’m quiteglad now really. The tattoo I wanted was pretty stupid!Nicky: We’ve got time for one more text. This one is from Alicia, in Oxford. “My parents let me doanything I like,” says Alicia. “But sometimes I don’t like it – I wish I had some rules!”James: Thanks for all your texts.

TRACK 4: Special ReportJames: We’ve got a special guest with us in the studio today. His name’s Toby Boyd, he’s 19 and he’s atdrama school. Welcome, Toby.Toby: Thanks, James.James: Toby, you want to be a TV actor, right?Toby: Yup.James: Have you always wanted to be an actor?Toby: I went on a school trip to the theatre when I was 11. Since then, that’s all I’ve wanted to do.James: Toby, you were born with spina bifida and you’re in a wheelchair.Toby: Yup. I’ve always been in a wheelchair.James: Did you go to a special school?Toby: No, I went to my local school. There’s nothing wrong with my brain!James: So you started acting when you were at school.Toby: Yes, I always tried to get the main part. But the teachers used to give me small parts.James: Why was that?Toby: I think they were worried about the wheelchair on stage. They thought I’d roll off the stage or rollover someone’s feet.James: What about at drama school? Toby: They’re brilliant at drama school. We did Twilight the other day – you know, the vampire film – James: Oh, yes, the one with Robert Pattinson as the vampire.Toby: Yeah, and I got to play Jacob! James: Who’s Jacob in the film?Toby: He’s Bella’s best friend – he becomes a werewolf! We just changed the story around so thewheelchair fitted. In the film, Jacob’s dad is in a wheelchair. So people kind of accepted the idea.James: There’s a new wheelchair user in EastEnders, which I think is the UK’s biggest soap opera, isn’t it?Toby: It is – I think it started 25 years ago! James: What do you think of him?Toby: He’s great – he’s a really strong character. When people don’t know what to say to him ... or howto behave with him ... he just tells them.

I remember that feeling ... when you open the envelope!Nicky: We spoke to two teens. They told us what the moment was like for them! First, Lewis.Lewis: My mum drove me to school. All my friends were already there. They were all jumping aroundand laughing. I went into the school hall. There were the envelopes. They were on tables in alphabeticalorder. I found my envelope. I tore it open! Yes! Five A*s, three As and two Bs! Come on! It was anamazing feeling!Nicky: Wow, Lewis did well! Now, how about Emma?Emma: I was on holiday, at the seaside. So I had to phone the school. It was awful, actually. I knew Ihadn’t done well. And then the school secretary read them out to me ... I got one A, three Bs, five Cs andtwo Ds. I felt sick! I didn’t do much work, so it was my own fault.Nicky: Bad luck, Emma. Some people just aren’t very good at exams.James: That’s all we have time for on this show, but tune in next time to TEAM Radio.

TRACK 6: IntroductionJames: TEAM May / June 2010. Welcome back to TEAM Radio! Some of you have called TEAM Radioto tell us about your favourite teams and favourite players. Here are three of our callers.Roberto: Hello, I’m Roberto, and I’m half-Italian. I’m supporting Italy at the World Cup. Who are ourbest young players? Well, one is a defender – his name is Davide Santon, and he’s only 19. Then there’sGiuseppe Rossi, who plays for Villareal – he’s a striker, he’s 22 and he’s dynamite!Isabella: Hi, my name’s Isabella. I was born in Spain, but I live in London. I’m supporting Spain at theWorld Cup. We have a very good chance of winning. We aren’t afraid of anybody! There are so manygood players ... Casillas is fantastic in goal, and then we’ve got – Fabregas, David Villa and FernandoTorres!Alex: Hi, my name’s Alex and I’m a football fan. I can’t wait for the World Cup and I really really hopeEngland win this time. Fingers crossed! I think our best young players are Aaron Lennon – he plays forTottenham – and Wayne Rooney - everyone knows about him. I like Glen Johnson, too. He plays forLiverpool. I’m a bit worried about our goalkeeper, Robert Green. He’s a brilliant goalie, but he alwayslooks nervous when he plays for England!

TRACK 8: Special Report Nicky: Next, we’re going over live to TEAM news reporter, Jake, who’s got some breaking news. Whereare you, Jake?Jake: Hi, Nicky. Nicky: The school was set on fire. No way!Jake: The fire is out now, but the fire brigade are still here, making the school safe. I’ve got the Chief FireOfficer with me. Thank you for talking to us, Brian. What happened here?Brian (Chief Fire Officer): We were called to the scene at three o’clock this morning. A local residentsaw flames coming from the back of the building.Jake: How much damage is there?Brian: Two classrooms at the back of the school are destroyed, and there is some damage to the schoolkitchen.Jake: How do you think the fire started?Brian: We don’t know yet. There is a litter bin behind one of the classrooms. It’s possible that the binwas set on fire. A bin can make a big fire - it could easily spread to the building.Jake: Thank you very much for your time. Now, here’s the Head Teacher, Mrs Collins. Mrs Collins, thisis a difficult day for you.Mrs Collins (Head Teacher): Yes, I’m really shocked. All the pupils’ work in those two classes is lost. The computers are destroyed. The artwork is burnt. It’s very sad for the school, the pupils and thecommunity.Jake: When will the school open again?Mrs Collins: The school is closed today so the police can do their work. But we need to open tomorrow– exams are starting. Luckily, most of the school is undamaged.Jake: Thank you, Mrs Collins. Over here is one of the school’s pupils. Darren, you’re 16, you’re in Year11 and you’ve got your exams this week. How do you feel about this?Darren (pupil): It’s scary. But I’m not at school at the moment anyway. I’m on study leave.Jake: Any thoughts about why this happened?Darren: Well, no, not really. It could be anything! It could be a problem with the electrics, someonesmoking. Or someone who doesn’t like exams! Who knows?Jake: Thanks, Darren. Back to the studio.Nicky: Thanks, Jake. Well, sadly school fires are becoming a problem in Britain. Some new Governmentfigures were released yesterday.James: Yes, the police and fire services were called to 3,000 arson attacks in British schools in the lasttwo years.Nicky: Three thousand? Well, this is a serious issue – you can read more about it in this month’s SpecialReport on pages 8 & 9 of TEAM.
