AudioCapability of Ericsson’s RX8000 ReceiversDelivering High Quality Audio
Ericsson’s portfolio of Integrated Receiver De-coders are designed to suit a comprehensive range of applications with products tailored to every application – from Content Turn-Around, Distribution, through to high-end Contribution.
Whilst video quality and functionality is often the primary driver and headline point of pur-chase, audio functionality is equally key to a broadcaster’s or network operator’s needs.
Ericsson’s range of receivers are designed with audio requirements at their heart – de-livering the latest in audio technology ad-vances and with the expanding needs of a multi-channel world as a core driver. Whether
the requirement is for simple monitoring of a Dolby® Digital service through to carriage of multiple, synchronized channels of high qual-ity audio for post-processing work Ericsson’s receivers can deliver a solution.

Content Flow and Audio Requirements
As video content makes its way from acquisition, through Contribution, Distribution and Direct to Home delivery networks, the needs and supporting technologies for the associated audio change.
Contribution Applications
Acquiring audio and video at source often demands multiple channels of very high quality audio that can be edited and post-processed. Audio channels may include a separate commentary track or tracks and multiple atmospheric audio tracks for surround sound delivery. These audio tracks must be delivered and ingested into the production facility fully synchronized, at “source” quality and in a form that can easily be archived and edited.
Such Contribution applications demand the highest quality audio technology. Ericsson receivers such as the RX8200 Advanced Modular Receiver offer a selection of applicable technologies to the user from carriage of Linear Audio, Dolby® E or high bit rate MPEG-1 Layer II audio.

Distribution
Once the source content has been post-processed within the broadcasting center to form a Program feed suitable for consumer delivery, different audio (and video) technologies are often applied for delivery of the packaged content out to affiliated or subscribing DTH platforms.
Distribution applications again demand high quality audio to ensure that fidelity can be maintained as far through the network chain as possible. Cost of content delivery and hence bandwidth constraints also play a significant part in the choice of audio technology applied. Depending upon the perceived quality threshold for the network, audio technology will lean either towards the higher end Contribution type audio formats such as Dolby® E or towards the Direct to Home audio types. Whatever the audio technology used there is still a frequent requirement for multiple audio channels – surround sound certainly but also the need for multiple languages.

Contribution Distribution Direct to Home
Ericsson’s RX8200 Advanced Modular Receiver and RX8300 Distribution Receiver family lead the IRD way by offering multi-channel audio support with core audio capability such as Dolby® Digital complemented with the most up-to-date audio formats such as AAC.
Ericsson receivers can utilize a unique audio technology called Phase Aligned Audio which brings together the best of both very high-end audio quality and the need to manage costs attributed to both equipment and continuing operations. By utilizing multiple, synchronized, MPEG-1 Layer II audio channels Ericsson encoders and Receivers can deliver surround sound channels plus additional audio services over distribution networks at significantly lower cost than other high-end audio technologies.
Direct to Home
Direct to Home operations perform a fine balance between quality and bandwidth constraints. As such efficient audio compression schemes are always employed. Technologies such as Dolby® Digital are common but with the growth of the more bandwidth efficient MPEG-4 AVC video compression format audio technology has also changed – use of more efficient standards such as AAC and Dolby® Digital Plus are growing. Direct to Home operators need to take into account the needs of the audience, as such DTH services often complement the primary audio with additional, secondary language tracks and audio description services.
