A BIG BREATH OF

FRESH AIRIn March 2020, I was reflecting about our sport and the transformations needed for the world of tomorrow. And here we are. The Masters of Chantilly marks the renewal, after a long period of confinement, of waiting, of doubts. More than ever I am pursuing my primary mission, the one I gave myself in 2004, when I did my first event: that of putting our sport in the spotlight, of establishing our events as annual rendez vous of the international sporting calendar, and especially of attracting new fans.

The new world calls above all to defend the values of sport in the greatest respect for horses and nature. It is also about encouraging young talents, our stars of tomorrow, who know how to mobilize communities of fans around them. It is to offer a unique, unforgettable experience, and strong moments of emotions for all. And finally, we must be seen and heard throughout the world and make sure that this sport is not reserved for an elite, in the shadows.

All this is possible thanks to the support and mobilization of loyal partners and institutions that want to make the name of Chantilly heard loud and clear throughout the world.

I thank all my partners: Rolex, Groupama Val de Loire, The Wall Street Journal, Le parisien, Studforlife, the city of Chantilly, l’Aire Cantilienne, the “région Hauts de France”, le Château de Chantilly, the “département de l’Oise”, the Laiterie de Montaigu, Eric Woerth, Isabelle Wojtowiez and without forgetting the teams and volunteers.

When I look at this Château de Chantilly, these Grandes Ecuries, this forest that is more than a hundred years old, more than ever, here in Chantilly, history proves to us that time passes but that its fundamentals, namely the French heritage and equestrian culture, endure. We are part of this heritage.

and higher

Groupama Paris Val de Loire is particularly proud that it will once again be the official partner of the Masters of Chantilly in 2021, in particular for the «Grand Prix Masters Two - Groupama Paris Val de Loire» event.

The renewal of this partnership highlights the trust that connects our two entities, reaffirming our shared desire to continue building a solid and lasting relationship.

The world of horses is a large family, and now more than ever we wish to affirm our support and commitment to the players in the equestrian world with whom we share common values. These are human values based on mutual respect and the desire for constant progress, united by the same objective to federate our talents for the benefit of performance development.

Accompanying the Masters of Chantilly is obviously to share that same passion, but much more than that, it means following the same direction and being driven by the same motivation to go further and higher. An excellent Masters to all!

WELCOME TO

masters OF ChantillyIt is with great pleasure that Chantilly welcomes the new organization of Chantilly Jumping, which is now called the Masters of Chantilly.

Chantilly is a city like no other. While it is, above all, a human community, where men and women live, work and play, it is also known for its dynamic equestrian activity. It’s therefore not necessary to remind you that many prestigious equestrian events take place in Chantilly: the Qatar Prix du Jockey Club, the Prix de Diane Longines, and of course this show jumping competition that we are very happy to be hosting over 3 days.

Show jumping competitions involve a horse and its rider in an arena with obstacles that require the horse to devote all its attention and power to the service of the person who rides it. From then on, the horse-rider pair must be in perfect harmony because many parameters such as impulsion, speed and trajectory must be combined to guarantee a clear round. The rider’s judgement and good communication with their horse will guarantee this success.

Combining sport, elegance and friendliness at the same time, the presence of the best international riders offers an incredible show in an exceptional setting - and we can say it in all modesty – on the most beautiful site, the Princes of Condé Racecourse (Chantilly Racecourse) with the Castle, the Amphitheatre full of greenery, and the Great Stables in the background.

So, for one weekend, equestrian sporting enthusiasts will meet in Chantilly!

I would like to thank the whole team at the Masters of Chantilly who contribute to promoting our city’s image.

Chantilly and the horse, a lifelong passion.

PRESTIGE AND...

high-level sport

I t was the 7th Prince of Condé, Louis-Henri de Bourbon, who built the most majestic monument ever dedicated to the horse, with the capacity for 240 horses, in 1719. Since 2004, this site at the heart of the racecourse has become one of the most prestigious stops on the international circuit. The best riders in the world will tread upon the green grass turf to compete in the CSI5*, the highest level of competition in the International Equestrian Federation hierarchy.

In charge of this new event: EEM who, along with its President and Founder, Christophe Ameeuw, is in constant search of innovation and original ideas to enhance the great sport of show jumping.

In this unique princely setting, the Masters of Chantilly is sure to be the major equestrian and sporting event of the summer. Chantilly is not only one of the world’s Capitals of the Horse; it is also a «True City of Art and History», as proven by its official title, awarded in 2007. This association between the horse and art will certainly be the trademark of this Masters. “What Aachen is to Germany, Chantilly will be to France”, promises Christophe Ameeuw.

A new appointment is thus scheduled on the international sporting calendar with the Swiss watch manufacture Rolex, a longstanding partner of equestrian sports for more than 60 years as the Rolex Grand Prix’s official sponsor, timepiece and title sponsor.

7

A new prestigious start for EEM: The Masters of Chantilly will be held between the Castle and the Great Stables, which were built 300 years ago. Set in a unique princely setting, the event is fortunate to have Rolex as an official partner.

Page 8: AudiEquestrianMasters Category EN 06 21.indd 1 14.06.21 14:07

meeting with

christophe ameeuwAfter 16 years of experience organizing exclusively indoor events, with the exception of an interlude at the small Lausanne arena, you and EEM are starting from scratch by proposing a new project on one of the three or four largest grass turfs in Europe: Why this choice?

For me, Chantilly has always been one of the most beautiful sites in the world to host an equestrian event. Beyond the beauty of this setting, the majestic grass turfs, the Castle and the Great Stables, it is held in the heart of a princely Capital, where the Horse is King. This unique opportunity was offered to us at a time when our Indoor Series had to stop, and when the health crisis that we have all experienced called on us to reinvent ourselves, to look for outdoor spaces, close to nature, that are more respectful of the environment. It’s in this new setting that we have brought together the ingredients that have become our signature and trademark.

What are Chantilly’s assets? What does this site have that others don’t?

Every historical site is unique, and Chantilly is no exception to the rule. But for me, in addition to its extraordinary setting and the strong symbolism it represents, Chantilly offers the unique opportunity to display and bring together all equestrian disciplines and activities, and to offer visitors unique sporting, cultural and historical experiences based around nature, the forest and gardens, etc.

What activities, other than sport itself, will you offer for this first edition of the Masters of Chantilly?

We will offer our visitors, participants and partners, the opportunity to discover all the facets of Chantilly and its exceptional environment. Visit the Castle, the Great Stables and its shows, the racehorses training at dawn, the polo, the Le Nôtre Gardens, the Museum of the Horse etc...

How will competitions, the international circuit and sport be different in the «new world»?

«What’s bred in the bone will come out in the flesh” (laughs)... I don’t know, but we will obviously have to be careful about taking too many trips, with the multitude of events. To protect, put less strain on, and to pay attention to the well-being of our horses. As an organizer, we will need to monitor the complexity and cost of large events. To adjust to the federation’s schedule so that we have less congestion. And especially to create great, unmissable events, which, I hope, the Masters of Chantilly will become...

What are the challenges of relaunching such a daring equestrian event in this very particular context?

The biggest challenge for any organizer is managing uncertainty. And in the current context we were held in suspense until the very end. Despite my determination to make this event happen, we only got the confirmation very recently and still today, one month out, uncertainties remain in relation to the sanitary conditions. We’re fortunate to have solid and loyal partners to accompany us and trust us to navigate in this fog. On our side, we trust the public and fans of Chantilly to adapt as well as possible and to be present for this great event.

How do you see the Masters of Chantilly going in the future? You have already mentioned a CHIO based on the Aachen model: Is that feasible in France? Will new disciplines be included as early as 2022?

As you can see, I have big plans for Chantilly in the years to come. From 2022 I would like to introduce new disciplines and continue this development in the following years. Aachen, for me, is an absolute model, not only in terms of a sporting competition, but because the whole city, its inhabitants, its businesses, its companies and its institutions live to the rhythm of and around the horse and its great sporting disciplines. That’s what we would like to do in Chantilly.

THE program IN A FEW WORDS

From July 8 to 11, the world’s show jumping elite will discover the first edition of the Masters of Chantilly. A rich program offering 24 events dedicated to Olympic riders, promising young talents and enlightened enthusiasts over four days. The highlight of the competition, the Rolex Grand Prix, will offer a €300,000 prize money.

The large grass turfs that enhance show jumping are becoming rare on the international circuit. The Masters of Chantilly offers two: the Great Stables Arena, with an area of one and a half hectares, and the Castle Arena.

The program is particularly rich: classic events alternate with more original ones.

The highlight and signature event of the Masters of Chantilly will be, of course, the Rolex Grand Prix. With Rolex, the official sponsor, timepiece and title sponsor, and a prize pool equal to the best purses on the international circuit - €300,000 - the Masters of Chantilly’s flagship event promises a great battle. The best horses and riders in the world will meet on Sunday, July 11, starting at 3pm for an event packed full of emotion.

STEVE GUERDATSteve Guerdat was riding a horse before he could even walk. He’s one of the most talented show jumpers in the world. His dedication and passion for horses have made him one of the best in his field for over a decade. The Swiss rider, who has won numerous awards, is proving his talent in the discipline. He is a two-time winner of the Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final, a three-time winner of the Rolex Grand Prix at the CHI Geneva and the FEI World Cup™, and finally, an individual gold medalist at the 2012 Olympic Games.

How did you welcome the news that Rolex and Christophe Ameeuw have taken over the Chantilly show?

With a lot of joy and happiness, because it’s been difficult for me not being able to go to Chantilly for several years. It’s such a beautiful place and knowing that Christophe Ameeuw and taken over this competition in partnership with Rolex makes me happy not only as a rider but also for the future of our sport.

Despite the current difficult situation, Rolex is continuing to support the sport and also equestrian sports: how does their unwavering loyalty inspire you?

Rolex has remained, thanks to their love and vision for our sport, and it is truly an honor to have them support us and our sport, and to take over events that are very important to us as riders, reaching as many people as possible.

Does the beauty of such a setting influence performance?

When you enter arenas like Aachen, Geneva, and Chantilly, you don’t just enter a course, you are sensing the history, the past of these places, this is what makes these competitions magical. It’s not something you can buy or decide overnight, it’s the stories that have been written over the decades that make these competitions so dear to my heart. I feel indebted to the organizers for allowing us to compete in such magical places.

kevin stautFrench rider Kevin Staut has risen to the top of his discipline by winning two Majors and an Olympic title. He won the team gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the following season, he won the Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final. Among his Majors’ victories are the Rolex Grand Prix at the CHI Geneva in 2010 and The Dutch Masters (formerly the «Indoor Brabant») in 2014. Kevin Staut was also the World No. 1 and realized his first notable achievement by winning a gold medal at the 2009 European Championships in Windsor, as well as a team silver medal at the World Equestrian Games in 2010 and in 2014.

How did you feel about the news of Chantilly being taken over by EEM and Rolex?

Chantilly has always been a competition that I’ve loved, it is extraordinary and the setting... there’s no need to explain, it is simply extraordinary. To see this competition happen in partnership with Rolex, a brand I am close to, and Christophe Ameeuw, with whom I have worked for years and who is an excellent event organizer, has surprised and delighted me.

Can Chantilly become the French Aachen?

I think that in terms of the space and the setting, but also in terms of Christophe Ameeuw’s energy and ideas

coupled with Rolex’s vision for the sport, this competition has the vocation of bringing riding in general back to the public, bringing together as many people as possible around an event that may one day be multidisciplinary, and become the French Aachen.

Chantilly will mark the return of the public: is it important for the sportsman that you are to perform in front of spectators?

We feel that Rolex and Christophe Ameeuw really want to give the fans the opportunity to watch all these good moments of sports live and in person. Yes, most of the events could be followed on the screens, but now as riders we can’t wait to be back «in real life», we can’t wait to be back with the public and the atmosphere, their support, the magic that happens when you feel the vibrations of the sport.

Does the beauty of such a setting influence performance?

In order to perform well, we need to be in a positive and pleasant atmosphere. Being in such a sublime setting, in such a positive and pleasant atmosphere and especially such a large and airy field, allows us to be in the best condition to do great sport.

gregory bodo

What are the constraints of a grass arena of that size?

Firstly, I would like to emphasize that grass turfs reflect an image of quality and generate an atmosphere that cannot be found anywhere else. I often say that a grass arena is the «Queen of arenas». This is justified by its green setting and the contrast observed when the obstacles of the scene are erected there, and this helps the final rendering whether on television or in situ be fully appreciated. However, there is a major constraint, the nature of the ground (which generally remains natural) which can deteriorate in poor climatic conditions. For me, a horse jumps just as well or even better on a very good grass turf. Of course, one also has to consider that on a grass ground, our layouts, sequences, and proposed routes will have to be adapted and consequently very open. To conclude, I think that evolving on such a large grass ground of excellent quality as Chantilly is a dream not only for any course designer but also for the rider-horse tandem.

Has the reduction in the number of competitions due to the health crisis caused you to «lose your touch»?

I don’t know what you mean by «losing your touch», certainly there have been cancelled or postponed events but this has had no repercussion on our function, as long as you regularly officiate at a high level. I have always had the same line of conduct (in my layouts and my approach to jumping courses) and during this break I have remained immersed in the circuit by staying tuned to the news, the results, the regulatory changes, the evolution of the horses and their behavior. Therefore, I don’t think I have to get back into the swing of things to build the shows to come.

Are you going to design courses in 2021 the same way you did in 2020 or 2019? Have the horses been able to maintain their level of competitiveness?

I have no reason to change my way of working. My courses are perhaps a little more technical and subtle than they were two years ago, but that is normal, it is also linked to the evolution of things, of the sport and of all the other external factors. That said, I try with all my heart to create what are known as «light» faults without ever putting the horse in danger or making an inconsiderate effort. In general, I am known for not building «big» but rather light and delicate. I am totally convinced that the horses are in optimal conditions to approach horse shows again. All the elements are present - state of freshness, musculature, and mental aspects. The work done by the riders at home and at the last competitions organized has allowed them to maintain the level of sport of the horses. They will undoubtedly come back even stronger than before.

We will be three weeks away from the Olympic Games: Will this also influence your work?

Absolutely not, we should not have this deadline in mind, the Rolex event in Chantilly remains an elite show in the world calendar with the best riders in the world. The Games are a synthesis of our sport at a key moment when the champion will be determined. Competitions in the run-up like Chantilly can simply allow us to propose certain technical sequences and bring the horses towards this global gathering in a gradual way. I will continue to work in the same way by proposing technical courses, according to the quality of the competitors and always with horse’s well-being uppermost in my mind.

a setting fulle of

history

The Great Stables are undoubtedly the most beautiful structure ever built to glorify the horse.

The construction of this majestic monument began in 1719, the fruit of the building delirium of a prince, Louis-Henri de Bourbon (1692-1740), the seventh Prince of Condé and grandson of Louis XIV, and a passionate hunter. The latter asked Jean Aubert, who was already working on modernizing the castle, to build monumental stables to house his hunting and service horses. Jean Aubert’s project and plans exceeded all of Louis-Henri’s expectations. It was almost an urbanization plan, with the construction of houses, a hospice and the extension of the church...

The first stone was laid on May 16, 1721 by Louis-Henri and the construction lasted 16 years. This grandiose building went on to have a frontage of 188 meters, divided into two naves around a 28-meter-high dome. The Great Stables could then house 240 horses, 500 hunting hounds, dozens of carriages, and all the personnel involved in these activities: whippers-in, coachmen, horsemen, veterinarians and grooms.

Between the famous castle built by the Duke of Aumale and the majestic Great Stables, built by Louis-Henri de Bourbon 300 years ago, the Masters of Chantilly turfs benefit from the most beautiful historical setting of the international circuit: a princely environment that is unique in the world.

From there, the town of Chantilly was born and expanded.

The castle, for its part, has been built and dismantled many times since the Middle Ages through to the Revolution. The current «version», built by the Duke of Aumale, dates from the 19th century, with a Renaissance part that survived the Revolution. The «lawn» of the Masters is also historic. The ground is the same as that of the racecourse, the oldest in continental Europe, built in 1836. The year before, the Duc d’Aumale’s elder brother had challenged two other gentlemen to a race between the forest and the Great Stables. The quality of the ground observed that day inspired the creation of the famous racecourse, which has been the scene of the renowned Prix de Diane and Prix du Jockey Club ever since.

It is on this same princely lawn that the world’s great show jumping champions will compete in the 24 Masters events, including the six CSI5* classes..

Chantilly

the capitalof the horse

Chantilly is above all famous for its 2,800 thoroughbreds that are trained every morning on the 120 km of sand tracks, or on the 120 hectares of grass and sand at the Domaine des Aigles. The major equestrian events such as the Prix du Jockey Club and the Prix de Diane certainly contribute to this reputation.

But thoroughbreds are not the only horses that animate the city of princes. The inhabitants of the Great Stables, built in the 18th century, also participate in local life.

At the time, the Great Stables could accommodate up to 240 driving and hunt horses. Today, some 40 horses, ponies and donkeys have taken up residence there. Together with their nine equestriennes, they form the Compagnie de Spectacle Équestre des Grandes Écuries. With more than one hundred shows each year, the Company currently offers «Du manège à la Scène» under the majestic 28-meter-high dome.

In Chantilly and the other surrounding towns, there are several clubs and stables for competition and leisure. The Henson Equestrian tourism center offers rides throughout the castle’s park, where there are about 500 horses.

The areas in the heart of the racecourse that will host the Masters of Chantilly have already hosted major equestrian competitions for other disciplines. A renowned international eventing competition had its heyday there in the nineties. Driving has also made its mark there with French Championships for one, two and four horse teams and traditional driving competitions. Finally, how can we not mention the first Chantilly polo tournaments that took place on this site before the creation of the Polo Club du Domaine de Chantilly in Apremont, by Patrick Guerrand Hermès in 1995.

Since then, this club with its nine fields has become one of the three largest in Europe. The Polo Club organizes the World Championships, European Championships and, in particular, the French Open, which welcomes the greatest Argentine professionals. It is the highlight of the season, when 800 polo horses enlarge the equine population of the Cantilian area, which swells to close to 4,000 subjects.

Chantilly

it’s also... The Château de Chantilly

Dismantled and rebuilt many times since the Middle Ages through to the Revolution, the current version of the Château de Chantilly, which forms the backdrop to the second Masters’ arena, dates back to the 19th century with a surviving Renaissance part. It is an exciting furnished castle to visit, with notably the second largest collection of antique paintings in France after the Louvre (Raphael, Poussin, Delacroix, Ingres, Géricault etc.). We should not forget to mention the 115 hectares of historic gardens (the famous «parterre», Le Nôtre’s favorite garden, the English garden, the Anglo-Chinese Garden, animals, and the Hameau which inspired Marie-Antoinette’s Garden in Versailles...).

The Great Stables

The Great Stables, built between 1719 and 1735, are certainly the most beautiful and majestic in the world. They are 180 meters long with a dome in the middle, topped by the famous statue of La Renommée. It is here under this 28-meter high dome, on a 13-meter diameter arena, that the shows of the Compagnie Equestre du Château de Chantilly are performed to a capacity of 630 spectators. The fifteen rooms of the Cour des Remises house the Horse Museum.

The cradle of Chantilly Cream

This is THE destination to taste authentic Chantilly cream! The story goes that it was Vatel who had the idea of «whipping» the cream and seasoning it for a dinner when the Grand Condé was receiving Louis XIV at the Château de Chantilly. You can see how it is made and then taste it in the very picturesque Hameau, in the castle’s park. In the rue du Connétable (the street adjacent to the Masters), the Atelier de la Chantilly allows you to discover its different variations. In this same street, there are also three excellent restaurants near the jumping arena. These are: the Bouchon Gourmand, the Bistrot Chic and the famous Goutillon, the meeting place of the Chantilly society, where you can meet jockeys, trainers and ... the crème of the Cantilian horse world! Three addresses in the pure tradition of French «bistronomy» which never disappoint.

The Princes’ Kitchen Garden

An unusual place and extraordinary garden with rare species and an animal park with entertainment to keep the riders’ children busy. Three hectares in the heart of the city, 300 meters from the Masters and which had been condemned to a real-estate project before being «saved» by Yves Bienaimé (the founder of the Living Museum of the Horse in 1982). In 2001 he turned this wasteland into a little piece of heaven, both entertaining, educational (we learn a lot of things about nature and animals), and zen.

the officiAl poster

aaron lowell dEnton

What inspired you to create this piece?

This poster is mainly inspired by Franco Grignani’s work. His pop-art design style has a great influence on my work. I wanted to convey the movement of a horse jumping in a dynamic and energetic way, and I think the simplicity of the flowing line achieved that.

Do you know anything about the equestrian world?

No, not at all! After being invited to work on the artistic aspect of this project, I found a rich heritage of show jumping event posters that was very inspiring. There is a long visual tradition in this sport that I am happy to be a part of now.

Chantilly is known as the Capital of the Horses and of art: did you know about this place?

I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t know about Chantilly until I researched it after I received the request. I visited France once when I was a teenager, but I didn’t go to Chantilly. I’d love to visit one day!

PROGRAM

Each year, EEM calls upon an internationally renowned artist to create the visuals for its events. For this premiere of the Masters of Chantilly, Christophe Ameeuw and Artistic Director Bruno Danto, asked the American artist Aaron Lowell Denton to create the collector’s poster which is revealed here. Based near Bloomington, Indiana, Denton is an eclectic artist capable of creating logos for a South Korean record store as well as various illustrations for the prestigious New York Times and The Atlantic publications. He has created many posters and many album covers, in a slightly retro and even surrealist style. The Masters of Chantilly is his first foray into the equestrian theme.
