DESCRIPTION
Here, I have asked three people of different sociodemographic class to answer some questions on their favourite genre of film. From their answers, I have elaborated on why I believe they enjoy these genres, and the pleasures they derive from them - in terms of audience engagement.TRANSCRIPT
Mum
• Sociodemographic class - E (unemployed housewife) • Favourite genre - Drama • Reasons for watching this - “I enjoy following a plot full of twists and turns with a
suspenseful atmosphere.” I believe my mum enjoys such intricate and exciting narrative as it provides a contrast from her everyday routine and therefore allows her to experience escapism with a media text very different to her normal life.
• An example of a trailer that would appeal to this group - ‘The Imitation Game’ trailer (see embedded into my blog post).
Dad • Sociodemographic class - B (self-employed full time) • Favourite genre - Action • Reasons for watching this - “The spectacle of the action and the special effects used are
both exciting.” I think that my Dad is so drawn to action because his field of work is cars and he likes to see the things that he knows a lot about on screen such as vehicles and machines to offer a self-esteem gratification and recognition and identification.
• An example of a trailer that would appeal to this group - The trailer of ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ (see embedded into my blog post).
Nick • Sociodemographic class - D (part-time employment) • Favourite genre - Comedy • Reasons for watching this genre - “It offers light-hearted entertainment and potentially
realistic and relatable situations which can appeal to most people.” In my opinion, he is referring to the personal identification gratification in that Nick likes to feel part of a group, also, comedy is a great platform for social interaction.

Tom • Sociodemographic class - C2 • Favourite genre - Thriller • Reasons for watching this genre - “It is tense and always leaves me as a viewer trying to
figure out what till happen next.” I think that the genre of thriller offers my brother escapism and unrealism whilst keeping him entertained by mysterious characters and plot twits.
