This document contains information specific to the 2018 QuattroFest event at Portland International Raceway (PIR) on November 2-4, 2018. Please read the 2018 HDPE Event Information for Drivers document for info common to most events.

Arrival and Safety Inspection On Friday, Registration will be available starting at 5:00pm and open until 8:00pm at the Red Lion Hotel in the area just outside of the Grand Ballroom. (see p. 3 for address). This is optional for those arriving in time to take advantage and is not required. Beginning at 6pm you will be able to complete your Safety Inspection at the Red Lion Hotel as well. Please see p. 3 for full info on Friday evening registration and Safety Inspection. Due to re-paving in the South paddock area, on Saturday, arrival at PIR will be through the Turn 8 entrance as opposed to the main PIR gate. You’ll follow the blue line below, and enter via W Delta Park Rd and N Vanport Rd. You’ll be asked to sign the waiver(s) at the entry gate before you cross the track to the infield. Please maintain a speed of 15mph or less while on the infield service road. NOTE: due to entering at T8 only, exiting the track via car will only happen in between run sessions when the track is cold. Please ensure that you plan accordingly with regard to leaving for gas, food, etc throughout the day and also coordinate with any guests who may be planning to join you at the track.

Once you’ve crossed the infield, you’ll need to find a space that is empty (no vehicle or any other gear) and park. If you’re participating in Driver Skills, proceed to the area with a red box around it to park. For Lapping participants, find an area in the green box, in the area to the North of the Timing and Scoring building. Bring your driver’s license (or permit) to Registration (yellow star) if not already registered. After registering, return to your car, empty it out and put any event sticker(s) on your vehicle. Bring your empty car, helmet (if applicable) & your completed Safety Inspection Checklist (last page of this packet) to the Safety Inspection area (orange arrows).

Additional Information and Reminders for the Event In the paddock

• The paper tickets in your badge holder are for lunch. Keep them in your badge holder for easy retrieval at lunchtime. Give them to the person collecting them at the head of the lunch line. No ticket = no lunch!

• Perform a personal safety inspection on the 2nd morning. Check carefully for fuel, coolant, or oil leaks. Fill up with fuel, oil, coolant and check tire pressures before arriving at the track.

• Keep your tires correctly inflated for the way you drive. Typically, at or slightly above the manufacturer’s recommended pressure for highway driving is a reasonable starting point. Never exceed the tire manufacturer’s maximum tire pressure.

• Remove items from your car, including floor mats, spare tire (if it is not bolted down), jack, tools and garage door openers. Remove hubcaps, wheel trim rings, lug nut/bolt caps and clean out the glove box as well. If it’s not bolted down, take it out. It’s best to remove as much as possible before you come to the track. Keep all valuables out of sight.

• It is allowed and encouraged for you to keep your logbook in your glove box so your instructor can sign it any time during the day.

• If your wheels have a custom wheel lock, be sure to have the socket or key on hand at the track, and bring it to Tech.

• If you have a tow hook, make sure it is easily accessible or installed on your car.

• Stay well hydrated, it’s important that you drink plenty of liquids. Water will be available by the classroom and various locations around the paddock.

• Please stage 5 minutes prior to your next run group in the designated pre-grid area. Doing so will help keep the event on schedule and maximize your on-track time!

• Drive slowly in the paddock area, no more than 10 MPH. Be especially conscious of this after you have finished an on-track session, where what feels slow is not slow enough.

• When parking your car after being on the track, do not use the parking brake as it is likely to seize from brake heat.

• Check the condition of your wheels and tires and brake pads after each on-track session. If pad thickness gets below 1/8 inch (3 mm) it’s probably best to install new ones.

Safety Inspection (Tech)

• Do not pull into the Tech line until your car is ready for tech. Waiting for participants to empty out theircars or forgetting your Safety Inspection Checklist while in the Tech line slows down the process for everyone.

• All participants should have finished or, at the very least, must already be in line for Tech 30 minutes prior to the first driver’s meeting.

• Arriving for Tech less than 30 minutes before the driver’s meeting may not allow the Tech Team enough time to review your car before it begins. If this situation occurs, we will do our best to check your car before lapping starts but that is not a guarantee and it could be possible to miss your first driving session on track.

• Arriving for Tech less than 10 minutes before the driver’s meeting is considered a LATE ARRIVAL. There is no guarantee that your car will be reviewed before the meeting OR before your first lapping session. When this occurs, late arrivals are expected to work with the Tech Lead to find a time to review their car at the Tech Lead’s convenience. Again, this will not necessarily occur before your first lapping session and you will not be allowed on track until it is complete.

• Stay with your car while it is in the Tech line to expedite the process for everyone.

Driver’s Meetings

• Attend all driver’s meetings – if you have any questions, be sure to ask them at these meetings. Be on time to these meetings and pre-grid staging.

• It’s important that you attend all driver’s meetings and arrive on time because we will be discussing critical information that you need to know for your safety. It is never acceptable for a participating student or instructor to arrive late to a driver’s meeting (whether one minute or ten minutes). If this occurs, you will not be allowed to drive at the event unless cleared by event staff. Do not be late to the driver’s meetings.

On the Track

• Collision avoidance systems that can apply the brakes for the vehicle must be turned off while the car is on the track. Owners of the vehicle must know the procedure for turning this system off and be able to demonstrate it at tech. This does not apply to stability or traction control systems.

• Be sure you know the location of each corner worker and maintain visual contact with them as you proceed around the track. On the first and last lap of each run it is good etiquette to wave or show a thumb up as you pass each station.

• Be sure you fully understand what each flag used by the corner workers mean. Descriptions are provided in the 2018 HPDE Event Information for Drivers document. Failure to respond to any flags or instructions may result in expulsion from the event.

• If you see a red flag at any station, stop as quickly and as safely as possible, remembering cars behind you. You’ll need to stop close to a flag station so you can see the turn worker, even if that means slowly driving to the next station. Pull clear of the driving line to stop on a level are of the track (stay on the track surface) and don’t resume driving until the corner worker in your view indicates (usually with a waving black flag) that you may proceed back to the hot pits. These instructions must be followed under a red flag situation as we can’t put emergency or support vehicles on to the track until everyone has stopped safely.

• If you see a black flag pointed at you, be sure to acknowledge it with a wave or a thumb up and proceed directly to the hot pits where you will be told what the problem is. Failure to acknowledge a black flag may result in expulsion from the event.

• If you have any questions about flags or corner workers, be sure to bring them up during the driver’s meeting or with your instructor.

• When you’re on the track regularly check mirrors for other vehicles. Avoid bunching together. If you find yourself in a pack, slow down for a couple of laps or come off the track, drive slowly through the hot pit lane, and the starter will let you out in a clear gap.

• Always listen to your instructor and/or any other track official.
