estate and land. VanDerBrink Auctions also has a free E-Newsletter that has more than 4,000 subscribers and they receive all newsletters, sale bills and personal notes from Yvette. Yvette knows it works, when many of her bidders come just to say hi at the auction. VanDerBrink Auctions, LLC has developed a following for their fun and exciting auctions.

2012 was an exciting year, and VanDerBrink Auctions learned even more that planning, time and advertising are key to a successful sale. e market was also back and strong throughout the year. Project cars and good originals were in demand. e rare, unusual and exceptional restorations were also strong. VanDerBrink grew up with the old cars and with a salvage yard background. Her family owns Nordstrom’s Auto Recyclers and knows the importance of the old cars hobby while at the same time understands the salvage business. Yvette also has knowledge of vintage tractors and gas engines. Her husband is a diesel mechanic and was collecting tractors when they got married, and she fell into that hobby with him. 2012 was full of exciting things with selling a rare 1904 Ford to England for $103,000.00 and cars to Israel, Belgium and all over the world from the Les Schuchardt collection in Spear sh, S.D. ere was everything from rare steam tractors and collector tractors to many other memorable items, and customers were served and items sold.

Yvette loves working with her customers and helping nd the treasures they might have and marketing them correctly to get the most money. It’s this personal service that she brings to all her auctions whether land, personal property or collections. e world is a big place and auctions just can’t be “ordinary or routine” anymore. ey have to keep up with technology and marketing.

Yvette has also written a children’s book and is available at www.mymomlooklikeaturtle.com. A portion of the proceeds from the book sales is going to the Avera Foundation to help women with cancer. She and her husband and Travis Leuttel started T & S Truck Repair in Lismore, Minn., last September and the business is building and bring truck repair, inspections and more to the southwest Minnesota area. She has a daughter, Emily, who is a sophomore in college and a son, Johnathon, a sophomore in Luverne High School.

VanDerBrink Auctions is excited about every year. Yvette just loves her job and is so thankful to the Lord and the work that He is doing with her business. Every year she approaches the business with enthusiasm and tries to ll up the calendar.

s Long as I can remember I grew up around Cars. I grew up on a Dairy Farm in Garretson, South Dakota where Horsepower was king. My Dad was a Motor head and a Collector and our whole life revolved around racetracks,

Derbys, and Dad’s passion for buying old Chevrolets, especially 1957 Chevys. Dad always had a nice car and of course a pickup. Even a trip to Church wasn’t complete without Dad spinning cookies when we got home in front of the barn. I can remember laying in the big back window of that Impala looking at the stars on the way home from Sioux Falls, SD. The Impala was a game for my sister and I to “Guess Dad’s Speed!”. He would shut off the dash lights and we’d guess how fast he was going. I remember seeing over 100mph on the speedo of the 1964 Impala while hanging on to the back of the seat. In the winter, the Impala would be a snowplow. Dad would pull into the hay fi eld with the lights off, turn them on and Jack Rabbits running everywhere and chasing them around. Cars infl uenced every aspect of our lives, even sledding. Car Hoods were our sled and whip down a hill by Corson at night between burning tires. It was fast, fun, and exciting. Dad was always buying cars and taught us kids some of our best horse trading skill. Mom a tally for us kids whose turn it was to ride with dad on “an adventure” in the truck to salvage yards and picking up the latest treasure Occasionally Dad would burn out a car for scrap and we would sit back and watch it explode then ride our bikes around it all day till it burnt out. Then we would pick up the melted stainless and chrome to make jewelry and crafts. When we heard a rumble from the shed, it was Dad’s Hotrod 400 plus horsepower 8N Ford Tractor creeping out of hibernation and fl ying down the gravel road. We knew it was the start to Racing Season. Every weekend, all summer to the area tracks. There were always Racecars at the farm, Derby Cars to paint, and horsepower everywhere. WE even raced out bikes around the yard and Mom made us a set of fl ags. When I was 18, my Dad entered me in an Enduro Race- 200 laps or 2 ½ hours whichever was fi rst. I was the only gal out of 92 guys and fi nished the race 10th. I was the happy heifer and we got the cars from the police auctions. Mopars worked awesome! I did more races and had 5 Happy Heifer cars. I learned to drive it was in a 1955 Chevrolet Panel. We would take turns bringing seed cord to Dad in the fi eld and then practice driving in the hay fi eld. When we got over the South hill, we would spin cookies and practice our driving maneuvers .But drove like Angels on the way home. Dad just a couple years

ago told us he saw us and would climb up on the silo and watch our stunts. I loved to drive fast and worked hard on the farm, but on the weekend it was a thrill to get all prettied up and Drive to town in Daddy’s Fancy Pickup. I drove a lot of vehicles growing up with Dad starting Nordstrom’s Auto Recyclers,

23 different vehicles while freshman to Senior in High School. Dad was pretty protective of his girls and one time he had us drive a car with no headlights so we would be home before dark! He forgot about a Full moon and Flashlights and creative girls. I’ve drove and Owned lot of cars, Camaros, Chevelles, and many others. One of my favorite was a 1984 IROC Camaro and a 1969

Chevelle Convertible 396-4speed. Wish I still had that one. There’s nothing like cruising on a hot South Dakota Summer Nite with the windows down. It’s this love of the Classic vehicles and old tractors that make me love my job. When I go to a potential customer’s collection, museum, salvage yard, it’s not just inventory, but a piece of history that is rooted deep not only in the

guy that I’m talking with but me, too. It’s this love of old iron that pushes me to work 100% for my customers and remember that this is their lives’ history and investment.   When we go in the barns, buildings, Museums, I can see the joy that these items brought in their eyes and it’s my job to bring that to the table and show the world. I’m not just an

auctioneer, but a fellow lover of old iron and work to save this important piece of their life

and make sure that it’s remembered and enjoyed by others. So when you are looking to have a sale, remember to pick an auctioneer that understands your passion and will work to show what your collection means to the world. Experience and Passion that Counts. I can do that for you- so 2013 is looking to be a great year- and if you are thinking of selling your collection I want to talk with you, let’s sit down and see what wishes you have and make a special plan for your auction and it to be a success. I fi rmly believe that every Dog should have its day- Give me a Call, I’ll be over and let’s talk about your auction, old cars, trucks, tractors, and I’ll bring the donuts.                                                                                    Yvette VanDerBrink

Auctions have been an American tradi-tion for hundreds of years, but only recently have they tied together the diversity of bid-ders and sellers through the internet. Keith Sharer Auctions combines the innovation of online bidding and selling with the old school charm of live auctions to produce a company that maximizes results for everyone involved. Whether you’re bidding or selling a rarity that requires a broad outreach, or a product in de-mand specifically for your area, Keith Sharer Auctions will bring you straight to your needs. This family owned business grew out of pas-sion and hard work. Sharer was raised in rural America where he spent his time at-tending many livestock production sales and farm auctions. He gained a knack for the business, and Sharer decided that the auc-tion industry is what he would plant his roots in. If you go to any auction, you know that an auction’s success does not come without

persistence. Sharer quickly picked up on this, saying that, “It is not a business where suc-cess comes without paying the typical dues of hard work and learning from others.” He set off on the path to his own auction busi-ness by attending Missouri Auction School in 1984. Sharer’s experience and determi-nation has earned him a successful, multidi-mensional, family owned auction business.

Keith Sharer Auctions belongs to the Minne-sota State Auctioneers Association and the State and National Real Estate Association, an assurance to many customers that their bidding and selling is cared for by trusted pro-fessionals. Connecting with these associations also keeps Keith Sharer Auctions abreast of law changes and fields of expertise. “It’s great to employ and empower the knowledge of anoth-er professional to gain maximum results for the client.”

www.auctions-monthly.comMarch 2013 Page 11

Though Keith Sharer Auctions’ roots are based in central Minnesota, they branched out to serve the wide range of customer needs, including ef-ficiency and quality. They purchased Granite Realty of Minnesota for bidding and selling in a conventional manner. Their indoor facility not only provides comfort, but the guarantee that auctions will not be hindered by Minnesota snow or storms. Keith Sharer Auctions can be held year-round, making their company’s sell-ers grow in great numbers, which gives bidders a great advantage and opportunity to discover diverse products. This company hosts both occasional online and consistent on-site auction opportunities to ca-ter to a broad customer basis. They specialize in real estate, farm, antique, estate, and busi-ness liquidation auctions. His team stands out from the competition by providing fundraising and benefit auctions and personal property ap-praisals. If you’re looking to sell, Keith Sharer Auctions handles the entire process from prep-aration, marketing, and presentation. “The auc-tion business is like any other business in that change is constant,” Sharer said on describing their need to diversify marketing techniques. This auction company ensures bidders, nation-ally, will know of sellers’ merchandise through sale bills, news print, radio, and online through websites and social media. Keith Sharer Auc-tions will also “analyze the cost benefit to de-termine which way to best market assets to af-fordably reach the greatest amount of buyers.”If you’re looking to bid in this auction business, you can guarantee the merchandise will be de-tailed and well organized, whether in person or online. If you simply do not have the time to

travel to an on-site auction, Keith Sharer Auc-tions often provides the convenience of online bidding. If you do have the time for the live auc-tion experience, Keith Sharer Auctions’ hold weekly consignment, estate and antique auc-tions in their indoor facility. The company “con-sistently sees extra value in viewing, touching, inspecting, and admiring a potential purchase,” and have an atmosphere that makes this pos-sible. The rush of an auction is upped a level by combining live bidding and online bidding simul-taneously.Keith Sharer Auctions’ experienced staff takes pride in their knowledge of merchandise which translates into a professional bidding and selling experience for their customers. Auctioning does not have to be without guidance, and their em-ployees provide as much as requested to ensure customers are getting a top notch experience. Whether you are bidding, downsizing, selling an estate or liquidating a lifelong collection, you can participate and count on Keith Sharer Auc-tions year-round. You can take part in the Keith Sharer Auction experience by attending their auctions any time of the year online or on-site by visiting their website through midwestauctions.com, calling them at 320-267-1963, or attending their auctions at 6774 Highway 25 Northeast, in Foley, Minnesota

The unspoken heroes in the rodeo arena often do not get acknowl-edged for the sacrifices they and their horses make to keep both the cowboy and livestock safe. The PICKUP man is the hardest-work-ing and least known professionals of the rodeo circuit. On an aver-age night’s work you can catch the pickup man and his horse rescuing riders, wrangling livestock, and per-suading recalcitrant one-ton bulls and broncs to give up the spotlight and exit the arena. At every rodeo there are at least two PICKUP men doing an excellent job getting to the rider as fast as they can to help. They know that their job is to keep the lives of the cowboys and the livestock safe.

Jeff Rector, a Minnesota home-town hero, is a pickup man for The World’s Toughest Rodeo and sever-al other different circuits within the Professional Rodeo Cowboys As-sociation. Jeff Rector received his Professional Card at 18 and shortly

after turning 19 years-old Rector became involved with ProRodes. His first pro rodeo was in Kingman, Kansas. Jeff has been hooked on rodeo ever since that rodeo in Kan-sas. In 7th grade the “city slicker, horse-crazy kid” convinced his grandpa to buy him his first horse. “Which was pretty easy,” Rector said. Rector’s grandpa loved horses as a child, too, so enjoyed watch-ing his grandson become more and more involved with horses and rid-ing.

Mr. Rumford, a rodeo producer/stock contractor out of Kansas, hired Jeff for his first rodeo. He still teaches and mentors Jeff on how to be a good cowboy, to properly care for his horses and how to mar-ket himself to get hired for more and bigger rodeos. As a result of Mr. Rumford’s dedication to Jeff’s marketing and training, Jeff was se-lected to work seven Circuit Finals rodeos as well as the top rodeo in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, the Copenhagen Cup Tour Finale in Dallas, Texas in 2001. This was the most treasured ac-complishment of Rector’s career. A pickup man is the only cowboy on the dirt that is guaranteed a check, making this Jeff’s dream career.

Dodge also sponsors the Pickup men; the man get bonuses each year and they wear Dodge clothing while in the arena. The pickup man is also known as the Ram Pickup Men. Dodge tough isn’t only for trucks. These guys are strong, fast and dependable.

During most rodeo performances, the PICKUP man uses five horses through-out the night. Each horse has to be broken to the event that they are used in. “I always ride quarter horse because of their ath-letic ability and speed. I try to use a bigger horse during the saddle bronc riding because the saddle bronc horses tend to be a little big-ger than the bareback horses,” said Jeff Rector as I interviewed him. A pickup horse has to be able to

get in close enough to bucking bulls or broncs for the pickup man to help a dismounted rider get to safety. The strength of a rider and the horse are very critical because pulling a rider up to safety or roping livestock and pull-ing stock out of the arena requires the tremendous strength of moving a heavy mass often at high speeds and in awkward positions . Even though the crowd doesn’t always see the PICKUP man, riders’ lives depend on the PICK-UP teams. During an 8-second ride, the rider is always focused and knows where the PICKUP men are located in the arena. During a thrilling event, two pickup men are used at all times. The first priority is to get the cowboy off the bucking horse or bull and then to safely escort the animal out of the arena.

In case you think you have the stuff to be a pickup man, Jeff has this advice, “To make it in this business you have to ready to sacrifice a lot. You have to be away from home, travel a lot and practice a lot to perfect your skills. You must never let anything or anyone dis-courage you.” Just between you and me, I think Jeff is an all-around nice guy who may be just a tad on the humble side. I think it takes talent, intelligence and love of the craft. Jeff has all that and more.

s Long as I can remember I grew up around Cars.
