Glorious Mar Lodge

Lot 2

At the heart of the Cairngorms National Park lies Mar Lodge Estate, a beautifully restored Victorian sporting lodge set in 72,000 acres of stunning wild Highland landscape. Within its boundaries are classic features of a Highland landscape: remnants of the ancient Caledonian pine forest, heather moorland, juniper scrub and a part of the high Cairngorm plateau.

On offer is comfortable accommodation in Bynack, a large apartment spread over two floors within the Lodge (with four twin rooms and four double rooms) with views of the Mar Lodge Estate’s heather and pine forests. During your stay, your party will also have use of the billiard room. The apartment is self-catered and caterers will be recommended to you.

This outstanding lot includes one day walked up grouse* for eight guns, with an estimated bag of 20 brace. Red grouse are only found on the hills of the UK and people come from around the world to shoot what many consider the finest feathered quarry. Your party will enjoy salmon fishing on the River Dee for four rods, as well as stalking for red stag, which are found only in the Highlands of Scotland. Stalking is for two parties of two rifles.

You and your guests will also receive an exclusive invitation for a private tour of neighboring Crathes Castle, Garden and Estate, an enchanting 16th-century castle with everything from turrets and towers, to winding staircases and ornate ceilings.

A glorious sporting vacation at the Mar Lodge Estate including walked up grouse,* salmon fishing

and stalking for red stag.

Value: $8,000

This offer is available for five weekdays (Monday thru Friday) for 16 people by

Lot 19

The friendship between Queen Victoria and John Brown has been called “one of the more unlikely upstairs, downstairs relationships” in British history. Some say they were romantically involved - possibly secretly married. Whatever form their relationship took, it was one that endured, extending from the death of Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert, in 1861, to Brown’s demise in 1883. During that time, Brown was the recipient of numerous gifts of jewelry from Victoria - stick pins, cloak clasps, and cuff and collar studs - engraved with her royal cipher. Upon his death, his collection also contained kilt pins and brooches adorned with colorful Scottish semi-precious gems and pebbles.

This collection of Scottish pebble and cairngorm jewelry is unique. Cairngorm is the name given to a citrine quartz variety with an amber or brown color traditionally mined in the Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland. During the Victorian period cairngorms were extensively used in traditional Scottish jewelry such as kilt ornaments, bonnet brooches, or carved thistle shapes. Local lapidaries in Edinburgh were skilled in cutting and faceting the gems to produce stones of a rich, brilliant orange color that were much esteemed and desired. Cairngorms were particularly prized and often handed down through families. Their popularity led to the local source becoming overworked and these iconic Scottish gems are now rare.

Set of eight glasses, matching decanter, and serving tray.

Spongeware takes its name from the look of its decoration and from the manner in which that decoration was applied, most likely by dipping a sponge into pigment and dabbing it over the surface of a lighter-colored pot, either in a free-flowing overall pattern or in a more controlled design, such as a border or band, or more complicated design. Because it was widely used in such places as farmhouse kitchens, only a relatively small amount has survived intact.
