Our village takes a village. We say it often and see it happen every single day in our community and inside these walls, but little did we know what a truism

it would be and what it would mean to this organization as months of planning fell into place for the 65th Auburn Chamber Annual Meeting at the Auburn Arena.

It began back last summer when our chairman of the board, Alex Muncie, announced that he wanted to secure Bo Jackson as the featured speaker for the upcoming Annual Meeting. Then, Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs stepped up and offered the floor of the Arena for this year’s celebration, knowing that the chamber had outgrown the previous venue. From the very first moment that we agreed to move the event, Jay and his staff gave us their full attention for every step of the planing process—from working to make a date work, to meeting on a regular basis, to helping set up the night before the event.

We knew the Annual Meeting consistently reached capacity, but we had no idea our numbers would grow to 736 guests. Hans van der Reijden and his professional staff met the challenge to serve one of the largest off-site events The Hotel at Auburn University had experienced. The food and service

were impeccable. The chefs, servers and administration of The Hotel met and exceeded our needs. Thank you, Hans and team! All of the other needs for an event of this size—linens, sound, parking, video production, signage, etc.— were met by member businesses who made sure we had what we needed to make the event a success.

When it’s boiled down, the true reason why the 65th Annual Meeting was such a huge success was because of our 885 members, especially our sponsors for the event—Aliant Bank, Lamar Financial Services, Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood and The Hotel at Auburn University. The staff and board could not execute events like the Annual Meeting and other programs without the support and help of our members and volunteers. Many thanks to our village! And, by the way, Jay Jacobs tells us that the floor of the Arena will hold 1,000 guests!

Let’s keep the momentum going as we tackle what is ahead of us in 2014. Auburn has a thriving business community and so much to look forward to this year. If you are not already, get connected with your chamber, join a committee, attend Tuesday Talk, participate in Leads to Business, let us know what’s happening in your business. We want to hear from you!

locAl contrActing compAny expAnds services, becomes dixie electric & plumbing

Now in its 105th year, one of the River Region’s best-known providers of electrical contracting services has introduced a new division to provide residential and commercial plumbing services.

Dixie Electric and Plumbing is the new name for the fourth-generation company that was founded in 1908 and is today headed by the founder’s great-grandsons, John and Noble Yelverton.

“This expansion was a matter of first listening to our customers,” Yelverton said. “Over the years, many asked us for recommendations about other types of contracting services. We recognized that we could meet their requests best by applying the same high quality and professionalism that they expect from us in the creation of a new division for plumbing.”

Yelverton added, “We didn’t just cross-train electricians to become plumbers. We started from the ground up. That included conducting customer surveys to find out what our customers really wanted and needed and then hiring experienced plumbing professionals who met our standards. We also relied on both customer and professional input to create a plumbing division that served at the highest level.”

To learn more about Dixie Electric & Plumbing, call (334) 262-2946 or visit www.calldixie.com.
