ROCK GROUP UPDATE ON PAST GIGS

A great night was had to see Police and Simple Minds , lots of laughing and Carole was in hysterics watching 3 guys dancing on the floor, home late as normal , but worth it. The 4 girls went without me to see Rod Stewart (as I was on holiday) apparently he was brilliant, and I missed a good night. Carole thought it really was Rod , and he is coming later on in year so I will be joining them for that gig. Last Friday we went to see the Thin Lizzy tribute band the place was packed, andI know now why they are billed as best tribute to Lizzy in Europe, FANTASTIC! everyone had a great time and we already have our tickets to see the Stones on the 25th. No Refunds Policy Your committee have reluctantly decided that when tickets are ordered they must be paid for, unless advised differently, and if you find you cannot attend the event you have bought the ticket for, it is up to you to sell that ticket on, and no refund will be given by U3A, unless there is a waiting list in operation. This is because some events have run at a loss due to people suddenly cancelling and expecting their money to be refunded. After all, if you book seats at the theatre, or a bus trip and found you couldn’t attend, you would lose your money, and, regrettably, we must have a similar policy.

We have learned that Morrison’s have extended their car-parking to 3 hours. -This means that you could park at 9.30am and collect your car before 12.30, - ample time for our meetings. Please make sure you don’t over-stay your time, though, as it is controlled by Parking Eye, and this is notorious for clamping down and giving out huge fines.

Creative Writing Next meeting on Wednesday 19th September 2.00pm, at 28 Helmsley Rd, Rainworth NG21 0DG As this is a new group, albeit starting up again, we were pleased to find there was nothing too heavy or intellectual, and everyone brought varying pieces they had written. These were quite diverse and enjoyable to listen to. Creative writing is an enjoyable and relaxing pastime with flexible timescales. Workshop – we have arranged a Creative Writing Workshop on the 10th October from 10am – 3pm at Acacia Centre, Annesley Woodhouse which will provide expert tuition on creative writing using the history of Annesley Old Church and Annesley Hall as examples. The prompts could involve romance, ghosts, exploration, disputes or even a famous duel. This workshop is free but places will be limited so sign up early to avoid disappointment. Contact Chris on 01623 550105 for further information, or to put your name down on the board

Ashfield U3A Our First Half Year Plus

The group continues strongly, having completed our first seven months. We listen to a wide range of music, sometimes taking in a bit of jazzed-up Bach or a number from a modern ‘classic’ musical. But mostly we are mainstream, sharing our love of classical music, in some cases coming new to it, and always extending our knowledge, appreciation and enjoyment. Members are welcome to bring or request a favourite piece to any meeting. These are the themes for the rest of the year:

September - The Orchestra October - Members’ Choice November - Patterns in Music

December - N & E European composers We meet on the first Monday in the month, from 2 to 4 pm. Our sessions are at the Ashwood Centre so there’s plenty of room for new members. If you’re interested, do get in touch, or just come along at 2 pm on August 6th.

Tai Chi

September’s meeting will be the 3rd

Sept. at 2.00pm. Thereafter all the

Tai Chi meetings will be the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 2.00pm. This is because

the venue can no longer accommodate us on Fridays after August.

Does anyone know of a LARGE waistcoat that can be borrowed by the am-dram

group until Christmas this year. We need a large dark-coloured waistcoat, and will

be happy to return it after Christmas. Please contact Jill if you can offer one.

STROLLERS GROUP WALK

For their August walk the Strollers went for the first time to two Local Nature Reserves on the eastern outskirts of Mansfield, Oak Tree Heath and Strawberry Hill Heath. We set off from the Oak Tree Leisure Centre across Oak Tree Heath in bright sunshine and were soon rewarded with plenty of colour despite the bracken having grown rather rampant this year, obscuring parts of the paths. The bright purple bell heather was fully out and the paler ling nearly out, both contrasting with yellow Common St John’s Wort and clumps of tall dandelion-like Smooth Hawksbeard as well as splashes of bright orange Mountain Ash berries every now and again, all surrounded by the fresh-green of the abundant bracken. More yellow flowers were seen on the eastern side of the Heath before we crossed over Jubilee Way South on our way to Strawberry Hill Heath. This was much more wooded with oaks and silver birches as well as gorse, broom scrub, wavy hair-grass and some heather. After a short gentle slope we reached the circular Strawberry Hill oak plantation, or Strawberry Nob as it is known locally, and on to a hidden pond caused by ground subsidence with, eerily, a number of dead trees still standing in the water. John had noticed numerous frogs hopping about on the return route path, but I couldn’t see any. And then the penny dropped - yes, the frogs were there, but they were thumbnail-sized ones! We continued back to Oak Tree Heath and the car park, well pleased to have had a lovely walk, especially with the colours of the heather and the flowers, and then on to the Tesco café.

Anyone wishing to come on our future walks on the second Wednesday of each month will be very welcome. Setting off at 10:30 am, all of the walks are gentle strolls of up to 2½ miles in length, which means that we expect to return to the cars between 11:40 and 12:05, in good time for refreshments afterwards. The next walk on 12

th September is the Nottingham Canal and the Erewash Canal

starting from Tinsley Street, Eastwood.

Tai Chi

September’s meeting will be the 3rd

Tues, 18thth

Sept.

23rd

August, 2012

Your speaker today is Gordon Asher on the subject:

‘Being nosy in other people’s houses’

Martin Fish Gardeners’ Question Time

The well-known author, broadcaster and garden expert will be visiting us again

on Thursday, October 4th. 7 for 7.30pm

Another chance to see Martin, who is a very amusing speaker and raconteur, and ask your questions, give him your gardening problems etc.

Tickets on sale today, £5.00 to include home-made cakes and tea or coffee. See Jill

Murder Mystery evening Saturday, October 27

th, 7.00 for 7.30pm

We will present a Murder-Mystery evening, with a troupe of

players providing the action. The theme will be the Wild Wild West!

Come dressed for the action – six shooters and Stetsons, feathered

headdresses etc., - not compulsory, but it would be fun.

This time, your committee will provide a two course chicken supper, -

(there is a vegetarian option), with food placed onto tables of eight, to

ensure that EVERYONE gets their fair share.

We have realised that we must do this ourselves, as relying on outside

caterers invariably means there is not enough for the last two tables, -

- and we must avoid this.

Tickets at £11.00 per head and table plans are now available
