Personal Statement

My name is Amber MoQuin and I was born in Mt. Holly New Jersey. Ever since my sister was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and ADHD in high school, I have wanted to help young children who are suffering from psychological disorders. When I graduate from college, I would like to get a job working in any type of psychiatric hospital for children.

the organization. EDUCATION/TRAINING Graduated: St. Mark’s High School- June 1999Currently Attending Argosy University in Sarasota Florida working on a degree in Psychology EMPLOYMENT I was employed with Walmart for three years working as an overnight stocker in almost every department in the store. I worked very hard every night to be sure that

all the live freight was put on the shelves as well as going through the overstock items in the cooler. I always had a neat work space and cleaned up after myself making sure that there were no boxes left on the sales floor and nothing was spilled that would cause someone to slip and fall. When finished with all of my tasks, the manager would come over and inspect my work before deciding to move me to another department.

Reflection

During the past three years at Argosy University I have learned a broad range of knowledge that will be useful to me when I graduate and begin my career, for example taking several different psychology classes I have learned about every type of psychological disorder and how to treat them. One of my strengths is the one on one contact I have had with bipolar disorder from my sister suffering from this illness for the past 10 years. My weakness is my constant struggle with anything involving mathematics, but I am working on getting better at it every day.

Cognitive Abilities-How would you communicate these ideas to your clients, patients, or customers if you enter the

health related field?I would first recommend a one on one consultation with the patient just so they are a little more comfortable, and if they like their significant other can be present. I would tell them the ways to help prevent heart disease and tell them to make

sure that they come in at least once a month to get blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. They can also use the machines at the grocery store to keep an eye on their blood pressure in between visits. I would also recommend that

they get one of those cookbooks for people with heart disease so they can get some meal ideas and healthy eating habits. They would need to cut down the amount of red meat they eat as well as food high in fat content, and try to eat more

chicken, fish, fruits, and vegetables. This will help them in the long run by keeping their heart healthy and strong.

Research Skills- Psychology of Women Course Project: Breast Cancer & Cervical Cancer

Week 1: Final Project A local agency has received a grant to develop an education and outreach program to provide medical and psychological services to local female residents, especially low-income women. You have been hired as a counselor with experience in the areas of gender and

health to consult on the various components of the program. You will provide your expertise on relevant issues in health care, including addiction, sexual health, gay and lesbian issues, domestic violence, sexual violence, and other areas of concern.

List the areas of women’s health that you will like your educational outreach program to cover. The areas of women’s health that I would like to cover would be more research in finding a cure for breast cancer and finding

both a cure for cervical cancer as well as how women contract this type of cancer.Identify the various types of healthcare professionals that you’ll like to train to provide outreach and describe why you want

them to be trained to outreach. The types of healthcare professionals I would train would be scientists with a background in cancer research, researchers whose’ specialty is focused on both breast and cervical cancer in women, and doctors who would be working with low-income women.

I would want them to be trained to outreach so they can be familiar with the different types of women who they would be in contact with on a daily basis. I would want them to be trained so well that they don’t miss anything that may be of importance,

such as the first signs of cervical and breast cancer.Analyze the settings in which the outreach program will be effectively provided. Discuss the various target audiences you think

will need the information and why.The settings in which the program will be effectively provided would be in middle to lower class neighborhoods where there

would be a higher rate of women without medical insurance. These women would be the target audience who would need the information because they cannot afford to go to a regular doctor for the type of treatment they need.

Identify the possible resources that you will consult to obtain information for inclusion in the educational program.Resources that I would consult to obtain information for inclusion in the educational program would be any other facility that is running the type of program that I would like to run. They would be working in a middle to lower class section of the city and

women who have little to no insurance.

Communication Skills- Oil Drilling off the Gulf Coast of Florida

  Amber MoQuin SCI 115 03/17/10M2: Assignment 2

The environmental issue that I chose for my paper is oil companies trying to push local Florida residents to allow them to drill for oil and gas off the gulf coast. I chose this

topic because I live in one of the cities on the gulf coast not far from a beautiful beach on Anna Maria Island which is one of the beaches that will be compromised if residents allow these

companies to drill in the Gulf of Mexico. As a resident of Florida for the past two years, I am against the drilling

because the beaches in Florida are the nicest in the country and would be ruined after the drilling had begun.

Ethics and Diversity Awareness- The Meaning of Blackness

In the story “What’s In a Name?” by Henry Louis Gates Jr., the blackness he is referring to his, as well as every other

black person around him, everyday experiences as a black man in a white man’s world. He explains how they are

treated as a group of people from other races based on the color of their skin, which includes racial slurs and

mistreatment. When he was growing up, he explains how blacks had a limited job market, and today they are getting high end jobs such as lawyers and doctors. Growing up in the 1950’s gave Henry the chance to see how his race has

come from struggling to coincide with whites, to being able to work together in a number of different ways.

Foundations of Psychology- Emotional and Behavioral Problems in Children

The broad topic I chose to review is emotional and

behavioral problems in children with specifics on how they are treated differently in school. I chose this topic because

my sister was diagnosed with ADHD when she was in middle school and fell so far behind the other students that she barely made it to high school. She ended up dropping out of high school in her junior year because she could not follow along due to missing out on critical studies that she should have learned in middle school. I feel that children today still are not being treated fairly in schools and the

government should recognize that they need to do something about it by providing those children with

learning disabilities a learning environment where they can learn at their speed.

Applied Psychology- Bipolar Disorder in Children AbstractThe topic I chose for my review paper is children with bipolar disorder. Researchers recently became aware that the disorder is a problem for school-age children, and researchers did not know could develop this disorder at an early age. I know very little about this topic; however

the little I do know is for what I experienced my sister go through when she was in her first year of high school. This is when my mother

noticed there was something mentally wrong with her. I chose this topic for my review because this is the field I would like to work in

when I graduate. I want to be able to help children with treatment so they can be able to live a normal life. The objective of this paper will

bring awareness to the growing number of children who are born with this disorder and, and to give knowledge to the parents who don’t even know they have it. The research on this topic is still ongoing, but I was able to find several articles that both support and argue against how to

properly diagnose and treat a child who has bipolar disorder. This paper will describe the difference in bipolar disorder and other

behavioral problems in children and how to properly diagnose as well as treat this disorder.

My Future in Learning

My future as a lifelong learner will continue even after I graduate and begin my career. Everyday I learn something new in the psychology field, such as new psychological drugs for depression that just came onto the market, and I am sure that when I start working I will continue to learn more and more each day.
