NATIONAL PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
My Dear Sisters in Christ,
It was a beautiful Saturday to drivefrom our home in South Carolina toMiami, Florida, where we would boardour plane for Rio de Janeiro the nextevening. As we approached the Jensen Beach exit, I had a yearning tovisit with my Mends Mary and JonCoffey. Henry and I had no plans asto where we would worship the nextday, so we could attend All Saints'where Jon is the rector. We called theCoffeys, and yes, they could havedinner with us. During dinner Jonsaid, "Tomorrow we will be installingour chapter officers, and it would benice if you would say something to thecongregation about The Daughters ofthe King." Now Jon is the priest who,20 years ago, handed me The Daughters of the King Handbook and askedthat I consider becoming a Daughter.I am grateful to him, for that is onedecision that I have never once regretted.
It was a nine hour flight to Rio andwe arrived in time not to miss the
morning rush of traffic. After a fewdays in Ifio, we flew over to Brasilia,and were greeted by Elizabeth andPat waving from the rooftop of theairport terminal.
Brasilia is the world's first air-agecapital, designed to resemble a hugeairplane. The m£dn streets are eightlanes wide, so there are no traffichang-ups. The north and south wingsare rows and rows of large apartments and businesses lool^g very
much the same. The governmentbuildings are in the center.
Pat's friends from Ohio arrivedFriday afternoon. They had a fewminutes rest before we grouped to tourthe city.
Saturday was a full day beginningwith rehearsal time at the Church ofthe Resurrection, for those of us taking part in the Ordination Service. Adelicious Churrasco (barbecue) prepared by the men of the church was atnoon. By this time the Daughters andfriends from Rio had arrived, so it wasa fun time. I want you to know thattwo of the Daughters firom Rio madethe trip by bus—a 23-hour trip. Aspecial surprise for Pat was the arrivalof Robson and his mother. Robson
is a scholarship child at the Mediatorschool in Rio, and a very special childof Pat's. For Robson and his mother tofly in the middle of the night from Rioto Brasilia was a true sacrifice. Whatjoy to witness so many expressions oflove. On Saturday afternoon wedrove about 30 miles to one of theeight satellite cities, Ceilandia, wherePat will begin a new mission. TheDiocese of Brasilia has purchased abuilding on a little plot of land. Ceilandia is considered a "good" slumand I'll have to admit it is "upperclass" to the favelas in Rio. Theaverage income of a family is $60 permonth. By late afternoon we were wellready for a relaxed visit and refiresh-ments in Pat and Elizabeth's apartment.

(Claudia is a Junior Daughter.)
Monday morning we flew back toRio to pick up our belongings at thehotel, rest a little, before discoveringwe had been bumped from our flightto Miami. We had to fly to New Yorkand then Miami. Well, once again, Ileft a big chunk of my heart in Brazil.My sisters in Christ, you have good

CHAPLAIN'S MESSAGE
Dear Friends,
I have been asked to address asubject that has generated a greatdeal of concern and controversy in theCburcb over the last decade, andtherefore I do so with a considerabledegree of trepidation. The subject isthe ordination of women.
Let me first say that during the last10 years I have made a long personaljourney on this issue, from being rather strongly opposed to being astaunch supporter of women in HolyOrders. My trepidation in addressingthe issue comes, therefore, not fromany personal ambivalence or uncertainty, but from a concern that mycomments here not pressure the readerif you are bjaving difficulty in accepting or understanding the matter. Ibelieve we need to be gentle and patient with each other in matters asgreat and as serious as this. Theimportant thing is not to dig in ourheels and refuse to deal with thisissue.
Recently, there has been some highlevel communication about the ordination of women between our Presiding Bishop, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Vatican. BishopBrowning has assured the Pope thatwe do indeed realize the grave complications this has brought to Anglican/Roman Catholic relations, butwrote "we intend not to depart fromthe traditional catholic doctrine ofHoly Orders, but to expand it to theother half of the human race." TheArchbishop of Canterbury, who ispersonally conservative on the issue,has accepted that among many Anglicans there are no fundamental objections in Scripture or tradition forordaining women, and that there maybe "substantial doctrinal reasons thatactually require it."
Both Anglican and Roman Catholicdoctrine hold that the humanity takenon by Christ, and what became therisen and ascended humanity of theLord of all creation, must be a humanity inclusive of women as well.Accordingly, Archbishop Runciepoints out that there is a strong theological argument for looking at thepriesthood in a "representative nature," wherein male and female mustbe represented.
So much for some of the theologybehind it all. On a more personal note,I want to say how tremendouslymoved and impressed I have been bysome of the priestly ministries ofwomen around the Church. As a bishop, I have sat and listened to womenspeak quite convincingly of their callto be deacons and priests, and I haveheard Vestries and Commissions onMinistry strongly confirm those callings. Can one seriously and foreverturn a blind eye and a deaf ear to suchevidence? I found I could not.
Ultimately, of course, we all need totake comfort and courage from thatwhich we know about God's Church.First, that it is His and He is Lordover it at all times. Second, downthrough the centuries it has weatheredall manner of storm, from both withinand without and it can weather thisone—"the gates of hell shall not prevail against it," we are reminded. Andthird, the Holy Spirit broods over usalways and will lead us into all truth.If ordaining women be an error untoGod, surely He can and will ultimatelycorrect it.
With my prayers and affection,tSHANNONNational Chaplain

P.R. CHAIRMAN REPORTS
My function as P.R. Chairman onNational Council is to keep my ear tothe ground and report to you—notonly what I hear but also to makerecommendations to upgrade and promote the Order within the Order.
The article in the April issue of TheRoyal Cross, "The National Council,Who We Are And What We Do," is ablessing to the Order and the National Council. Please reread this article and note that in conjunction withthe reference to 1 Cor. 14:12 in theNational Chaplain's message, also inthe April issue, the message is loudand clear—the Spirit is moving in theOrder to impress upon us that OurCommunity is larger than a singleChapter, Parish, Diocese or Province.
The Order is all the "buzz words"now in fashion—"Caring Community," "Loving Support Group," "TimePrioritizing," "Doers of the Word."The excitement generated by all thenew doors God is opening keeps mehstening for direction from the Spirit—1. Think of Presiding Bishop Browning's emphasis on Evangelism,—2.Note the marvelous double dooropened by the Council for Women'sMinistries.

COUNCIL FOR WOMEN'S
MINISTRIES
"The purpose of the Council forWomen's Ministries is to bring together the leaders of the women in theEpiscopal Church, to increase effectiveness of women's ministries, to support the different gifts, values andministries of women, and to advancethe roles of women in the mission ofthe Church."
The Council is not an organizationor elected board. Rather, it is a gathering of leadership of more than twenty-three women's groups. IT'S IN YOUR FACEYou don't have to tell how you liveeach day,
You don't have to say if you work oryou play;
A tried, true barometer serves in theplace—
However you live, it will show in yourface.
The false, the deceit that you bear inyour heart
Will not stay inside where it first got astart;
For sinew and blood are a thin veil of
lace—
What you wear in your heart, youwear in your face.
If your life is unselfish, if for othersyou live.
For not what you get, but how muchyou can give;
If you live close to God in His infinitegrace—
You don't have to tell, it shows in yourface.
AMEN
