LyOn: WhErE aNyThiNgiS pOSSiBlELyon is a dynamic city, where economic competitiveness and quality of life go hand in hand.

With a vast range of resources and mechanisms across the urban area, Lyon has a rich and varied business community, providing substantial employment opportunities. Lyon is the number one location in France (outside the Greater Parisian region) for business start-ups, and the third most popular location in France for international companies*, including major names such as Apicil, BioMérieux, Boiron, Cegid, Mérial, Centre Européen de Virologie et d’Immunologie, CNR, Danone, Euronews, Renault Trucks, Sanofi Pasteur, Seb, and TNT Express.

The city has created five competitiveness clusters - recognized as some of the best of their type - in order to strengthen its expertise in its sectors of excellence. Lyon’s 130,000 students and 11,500 researchers work closely with local businesses, making the urban area a location for innovation and experimentation on an international scale.

Lyon is located at the intersection of all major European cities and boasts extensive transport infrastructures, providing an exceptional living environment along the banks of the city’s twin rivers.

It is a historic city and a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site. With its famous cuisine, cultural events and festivals, and substantial parks and green spaces along the banks of the Rhône and Saône, it is a great place to live.

Lyon truly is a city without compromise, where anything is possible..

WhErE EaCh diSTriCT haS a SOulin lyon, every arrondissement has its own, unique personality. in the 1st and 2nd arrondissements, at the heart of the presqu’île, the artistic flair of the slopes of the Croix-rousse meets the chic of the ainay district. The 3rd arrondissement is well-known for its modern architecture and non-stop activity. The 4th arrondissement has all the warmth and atmosphere of a small village, where the spirit of the Canuts lives on. in the 5th arrondissement, the narrow streets, traboule alleyways and ancient theater reveal the history of lugdunum. The 6th arrondissement, meanwhile, combines haussmann-style and modern architecture, with famous stores and the exquisite rose garden in parc de la Tête d’Or. The 7th arrondissement teems with student life day and night, from the universities to the houseboats along the banks of the rhône. in the 8th arrondissement, you’ll find a place that architect Tony garnier imagined as the ideal city, where the Maison de la danse fills the air with its magical choreography. Finally, the 9th arrondissement is undergoing major changes to become a pleasant place to live along the banks of the Saône.

The LyOn wAy OF LiFelyon is the city that never sleeps, bustling with activity all year round. its streets teem with thousands of people hurriedly going about their business or taking a leisurely browse through the city’s many stores. despite this constant movement, injecting vibrancy and energy into the city, lyon still remains an awe-inspiring place with its imposing architecture. The old neighborhoods, with their uNESCO-listed heritage, tell the story of the city’s past as the former capital of the gauls. The “presqu’île” (the downtown area between the rhône and Saône rivers) features grand haussmann-style buildings standing side-by-side with modern constructions. and then, all of a sudden, the incessant activity stops. Time seems to come to a standstill in the city’s parks and along the banks of the rhône, which have been transformed into a giant promenade. With their green spaces, cycle paths and pedestrian walkways, everything appears to slow down here, creating the ideal place to relax. lyon strikes the perfect balance between activity and tranquility, providing the ideal quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

arChiTECTurE: a SyMBOl OF ThE METrOpOliS...For many years, lyon has been a place where architects can experiment with their vision of the metropolis of the future. it has become the “ideal city”, with its sky-scrapers and slaughterhouses built by Tony garnier, and the rebuilt Opéra designed by Jean Nouvel, and an “international city”, with its red-brick constructions designed by renzo piano and the la Confluence district, the work of several well-known designers. as a result, the lyon of today is an elegant mixture of unrivaled rich historical heritage and the architectural design of the future, some examples of which have already become well-known symbols of the city.

uNESCO WOrld hEriTagE SiTEThe historic center of lyon has been listed as uNESCO World heritage Site since 1998, placing it on the same level as australia’s great Barrier reef, the angkor Wat temple in Cambodia and the Venetian lagoon. The site is bordered by the city’s ancient fortifications, including the Fourvière hill, the historic center of lyon and a substantial portion of the presqu’île. The historic center of lyon is an exceptionally beautiful renaissance neighborhood, with its narrow streets, the fountain at place Saint-Jean dating back to 1844, the Saint-Jean Cathedral, which took three centuries to build, the Manécanterie (parish choir school), which is the oldest building in the old city, and around a hundred renaissance-style homes. although the historic center of lyon has around 200 traboule alleyways, only a portion of these remain open to the public.

A SucceSSFuL MiXTure OF MODerniTy AnD nATureas a major international metropolis, lyon is a source of inspiration for the world’s most talented architects, who create powerful symbols of the city’s influence. at the confluence of the rhône and Saône, world-famous architects have created a futuristic neighborhood, where modernity and quality of life come together. On lyon island, a series of “container” buildings have sprung up, echoing the activities of the harbor that they overlook. This image of a bustling river port is both highly realistic and an artistic device that strengthens the location’s poetic nature. By combining different shapes, materials and colors, against the backdrop of the city’s lights, these modern architectural designs are transformed into living, breathing, habitable sculptures. They underline lyon’s ambition to become the city of the future, becoming genuine symbols that are immediately recognized worldwide.

a piNCh OF CrEaTiViTyFollowing the footsteps of their masters, today’s chefs are revisiting traditional dishes and adding their own personal touch of creative talent and imagination. lyon features restaurants by famous names such as Nicolas le Bec, philippe gauvreau, Matthieu Viannay and davy Tissot.

iNdOOr aNd OuTdOOr MarkETS...lyon’s indoor and outdoor markets feature a variety of regional produce, such as salami sausages, pork products, cheeses, macaroons and chocolates, allowing you to bring a taste of lyon into your own kitchen.

GASTrOnOMic TrADiTiOnlyon’s famous cuisine has its roots in antiquity. as the capital of the Three gauls, lugdunum was the center of the wine trade. during the renaissance, a distinction was made between so-called “bourgeois” cuisine and popular cuisine centered around the slaughterhouses, including the famous tripe immortalized by François rabelais in his work gargantua. Today, the city still specializes in staple goods, as demonstrated by the names of some of its streets: rue de la Fromagerie (dairy Street), rue de la poulaillerie (poultry Merchant’s Street) and rue Mercière (haberdashery Street). With the rise in popularity of italian cuisine in the 17th and 18th centuries, the people of lyon took these traditions and made them their own, combining artichokes with foie gras and making their own ice creams. it was during this period that lyon’s reputation for fine cuisine was born. The city’s first restaurants appeared at the same time as the “Mères lyonnaises” (lyon’s signature dishes). These dishes took simple cuisine and turned it into an art form, becoming famous worldwide. in 1934, famous epicurean Maurice Edmond Sailland declared lyon the capital of cuisine. The idea took root and is still relevant today, with many of the city’s restaurants and “bouchons” listed among the top Michelin-rated establishments in the world.

Following the decision to group 18 higher education institutions in lyon and Saint-Etienne under the banner of “université de lyon”, a new phase has been launched to strengthen the international dimension of its campuses. The lyon Cité Campus project will lead to the emergence of modern campuses, where higher education institutions, research bodies, businesses and private institutions stand side by side. This new project involves the Charles Mérieux and lyonTech-la doua campuses. These two campuses are highly ambitious and have gained broad recognition for their expertise...

CLEAN TECHNOLOGIES: A LYON SPECIALITYClean technologies are industrial services and techniques that use natural resources, energy, water and raw materials in a way that aims to optimize efficiency and productivity. Any services or techniques of this type must therefore always try to limit pollution and waste. Performance, meanwhile, must be at least as good as or even better than the performance of traditional technologies. The end goal is to improve user profit. Lyon is currently one of the top 10 clean technologies centers in Europe.

CharlES MÉriEuX CaMpuSThis campus specializes in Biosciences and human and Social Sciences. it will promote a culture of openness and dialog with all players in the sector. its aim will be to develop innovative, structural projects with the Centre de recherche avancée (advanced research Center), the Centre Européen de Nutrition pour la Santé (European health Nutrition Center), the Maison internationale des langues et des Cultures (international language and Culture Center) and a residence for public and private sector researchers in the Confluence neighborhood. The proximity of the manufacturing companies and businesses at gerland will help to support this research, along with the Biopôle, the Tony garnier business incubator and the p4 laboratory.

innOvATiOn DrivinG cOMpeTiTiveneSSin a climate of ever-fiercer national and international competition, companies need to remain at the cutting edge of technological developments and innovation. in recent years, lyon has quickly established itself as a driver of competitiveness and innovation. in 2005, the French government officially approved the city’s five competitiveness clusters. lyon is now the leading city in France in terms of excellence in innovation. in 2008, lyon enhanced its reputation even further. The city’s five competitiveness clusters had all achieved their objectives. Only 34 of a total of 71 such clusters across France could boast this same achievement. This is clear proof, if such proof were needed, that greater lyon has struck the perfect balance between research, development and manufacturing.
