attract audience

Initially, before starting the production process of my film I wanted to gather information that would help me to plan how to attract and address the target audience for my media product. I used a number of methods such as questionnaires, surveys and personal research. From my first questionnaire, I found that the majority of the 20 people asked preferred to watch horror films that included religious paranormal activity rather than blood and gore, or vampires. Therefore, I chose for my media product to include a main theme of paranormal activity. This was shown through the female antagonist using only her mind to somewhat cast a spell over the protagonist in which she was able to control his body and soul to lure him into a room where she can thereby torture him. The religious element came from the setting which was set in a graveyard memorial park. To really emphasise the spiritual religious element, I chose for the female antagonist to do a religious gesture, touching her forehead with one hand and then crossing it over her chest, which is a very common gesture used by Christians when ending a prayer. Additionally, the majority of people asked stated that they found a graveyard the scariest location to be in. This was a large factor of the film which attracted my target audience as it demonstrated both the paranormal and religious aspects which the majority of people found frightening.

I also attracted the audience by including activities they most enjoyed and with whom. For example the majority of people asked said their favourite sport/ leisure activity was football and therefore I chose for the two male characters in my film to use dialogue which reveals they were taking part in a football match, as well as include props such as a sports bag and football.

Another feature I included in my media product to attract the majority of horror film likers is that the two protagonists were presented as friends as the most people questioned stated that they spend most of their time with their friends and therefore by including two best friends in the opening sequence it would address the audience as it instantly gives them a factor in which they can relate and feel common with.

From the feedback of the first screening of my film, I gathered information that would help benefit my product and give improvements what’ll attract and address the audience for my product even

more. However, there was not much critism as the 100% of people that watched my media product

believed that it looked like a horror

Especially as editor, the feedback on the editing helped me decide whether my product was attracting and addressing the audience as I intended. Out of approx 27 members of the public, only 1 disagreed with the idea that the editing of my media product didn’t help them understand the plot of the film. This gave me the indication that my editing was successful in the task of addressing the audience as they felt it fulfilled the requirements of a horror film.

Furthermore, constructed criticism from Chris, a film maker who was present at the screening suggested “If I could give any improvements, it would be to include close up shots of the props to break down the conversation “.

However, due to limited time and equipment, I was unable to film additional scenes. But, as this is not a conventional or absolute requirement needed to attract and address my horror opening sequences audience. I feel as though I have fulfilled that.
