Vol. III Issue 3 Frazer Elementary School Family Newsletter December 2008 Principal’s Prose Our Veterans Make a Difference! Attitude of Gratitude As Frazer students honored Veterans this November, they learned that brave men and women serve both here in our nation and abroad. They also learned that many families have served for generations, with several Frazer parents currently serving in the United States military. Students listened respectfully as three servicemen shared their stories. Sergeant Don Myers shared about his experiences in the Korean War (192-1954) and those of his ancestors who served before him. Students saw a commendation signed by President Abraham Lincoln, that was given to Mr. Myers’ great-grandfather for bravery during the Civil War. Ser- geant Robert E. Kersey Jr., who has previ- ously served in Iraq and other stations overseas, shared how he currently helps protect citizens following natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. Colonel Anthony DiGiacomo will soon be returning to Iraq with the Army Air National Guard (Battalion Commander of the Black Hawks). It was fascinating to see the equipment he wears to keep him safe and help him do his job in extreme weather situations. Students made cards to thank each of our guests. In addition, cards were sent to PVT Seth Koosed, SGT 1st Class Brandon Knicely, SGT Todd Hall and LCPL Jacob Coy. As we gather with our families this Holiday Season, remember to give thanks for the freedoms we have because of the sacrifices of so many. Our respect, gratitude and prayers are with each of our servicemen and women. (top left) Madazyn and Sgt. Kersey; (top right) Deionne and Colonel DiGiacomo; (bottom right) Sgt. In keeping with our Attitude of Gratitude this year, we conducted a Toy Drive the fi rst two weeks of Novem-ber to benefi t children and families served through the Community Christmas program. With your gener-ous support, we were able to

collect eight boxes full of all kinds of toys. We are very proud of our Caring Kids of Character who will be making a difference in the lives of so many needy families this Christmas. A special thank you goes out to our Fourth Grade Leadership Team members who helped to make this project a success. They designed posters, wrote and presented announcements, collected toys from our collec-tion boxes , and fi nally sorted all the toys at the end of our campaign. Together we can make a positive contribu-tion to our community. Thanks again for your help!

THANKSGIVING FEASTMiss Waldman and Mrs. Parson’s classes prepared their annual Thanksgiving feast on Monday, November 17th. Grade 2-5 students prepared an entire meal for themselves and the teachers in the build-ing all on their own. This experience helps to teach the life skills of cooking, measurement, table manners, food/kitchen etiquette, reading and following a recipe, working collaboratively, time man-agement, etc. The students made mashed potatoes (from scratch), gravy, stuffi ng, noodles, green beans, muffi ns, baked apples, fruit salad, pies and teachers brought in turkey. The students were able to leave to go home with a picture cookbook of our day. Many thanks to the aides, speech therapist, and parent volunteer who helped out on this very exciting day!!!

JANUARY5 First Day Back

Students from Mrs. Blocker’s 4th grade reading to us. This is our book buddy program we have just started.

Maddie is showing the mobile she made of her family. We have been studying family life in Social Studies.

Mr. Meyers, Mr. and Mrs. Her-bruck’s dad, came to visit Frazer’s second grader. Mr. Meyers knows everything there is to know about buckeyes. He brought in nine different kinds of buckeyes for the students to examine. We now know why our state tree is called a buckeye. The buckeye nut looks like an eye of a buck! Students also watched a video about Ohio. Thanks to Mr. Meyers, every student got to take home an Ohio buckeye!
