“A Very Liberal Church . . . !”
I so enjoy the conversations I have with the Lord’s people. Christians are so encouraging, interesting, and informative. Recently someone mentioned they had heard “The Meadows” congregation was the most liberal church in the area. Really? Who knew?! Well, lets just see about that.
First, I don’t like labels. So much depends upon the person’s frame of reference. For example, when Jesus wrote to the Christians in Smyrna, He said, “I know your tribulation and poverty (but you are rich),” Revelation 2:9. Now some would say these were poor people. But Jesus wouldn’t! Later, to those in Sardis Jesus wrote, “…you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead,” (3:1). YIKES! Clearly, how a church is labeled seems to be a matter of perspective. Yet the only perspective which truly matters is the one Jesus holds!
I would agree the Meadows congregation is very “liberal”! When it comes to a desire to know God’s will/word, we liberally spend many hours in our study; Sunday am, pm, Monday, Wednesday & Thursday evenings (and this doesn’t even include the Evangelism Class we have every other Saturday). We are also incredibly liberal in our giving. Not only in the weekly offering, but individually using money to take care of shut-ins, impoverished school children, etc. When I went to Kenya earlier this year, the brethren gave sacrificially to provide for my transportation there AND back!
So with time and money, I would say this is a very liberal congregation. But these brethren are also liberal in the amount of love they show. Not only to each other, but also our guests (at church), and even strangers away from the church building. Many are the stories of brethren helping neighbors and others who are struggling financially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. The love this family liberally showers upon others is one of the features about “The Meadows” for which I am most proud!
The label liberal is usually applied to a congregation’s “doctrinal” positions. Too often, however, when people talk about “doctrine” they also mean matters of opinion (which some consider “doctrinal”). A Bible example of this was when some Pharisees (who were strong in matters of opinion but weak in their observance of God’s commands) complained to Jesus about His disciples (see Matthew 15:1-2). Jesus’ response (see vs. 3ff) demonstrates His concern is for God’s commands (not man’s opinions). So if following God’s commands and not man’s opinions is considered liberal – then we will
wear this label proudly! Rick Walker

My Redeemer We sing the song, “I know that My Redeemer Lives.” Fred A. Filmmore wrote these
words: “ I know that my redeemer lives, And ever prays for me; I know eternal live He
gives from sin and sorrow free. He wills that I should holy be, In word, in thought, in
deed; Then I His holy face may see, when from this earth-life freed. I know that unto
sinful men His saving grace is nigh; I know that He will come again to take me home on
high. I know that over yonder stands a place prepared for me; a home, a house not made
with hands, Most wonderful to see.” All of God’s children are singing this song.
In John 14:2-3, “In my Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have
told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come
again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
These words which comforted the apostles have proved consolatory unto Christ’s people in every age, and especially to
those in affliction of spirit. This is a promise that Christ gives to our faith. Many of our Lord’s earlier sayings had been vague;
now, in anticipation of His departure, His language is plain and clear. Jesus has gone to prepare, not for Himself, but for His
people. When earth has no longer a place for them, a home will be found to have been made ready for their reception else-
where. There is much that is mysterious in the exercise of our Savior's mediatorial grace in the sphere of His present action;
but we have no difficulty in believing that He concerns Himself above with the work which He commenced below.
Jesus will come again to receive you and I. When the earthly service of a faithful disciple is finished, then Jesus comes to
welcome that beloved and approved one to rest and recompense. Concerning our loved ones who have passed on, we have
the assurance that they have not been overlooked by the divine and tender friend of souls. Jesus assures us of His blessed
fellowship. The language in which Jesus conveyed the assurance must have been peculiarly affecting to those who had been
with Him during His earthly ministry. They knew by experience the charm of their Lord’s society, and the strength it gave
them for work and for endurance. What more attractive and glorious prospect could the future hav for them than this ~ the
renewal and the perpetuation of that fellowship which had been the joy and the blessing of their life on earth? But the same is
in a measure true of every Christian. What representation of future happiness is so congenial and so inspiring as this ~ the
being “ever with the Lord?”
The peace which is the fruit of faith comes to light. Much was at hand which will likely cause alarm and dismay. Events
were about to happen which would crush many hopes and cloud many hearts. Hence Jesus’ admonition to His disciples,
“Let not your heart be troubled.” An admonition such as this, when it comes alone, is powerless. But Christ, by revealing
Himself and His purposes to the minds of His brethren, supported the precept He addressed to them. What might well distress
and even overwhelm those who were without the support and consolation of a sustaining and inspiring faith, would be power-
less to shake such as built their hopes upon the sure foundation of the unchanging faithfulness, immortal love. Those who
have faith in Christ are the possessors of true peace ~ the peace which “passeth understanding”, the peace which the world
can neither give nor take away.
Job said, “For I know that my redeemer liveth,”. He has it and He holds it firmly. His tone is one of calm, solemn, glad
assurance. Job did not see this at first. But sorrow has given him a marvelous power of intuition. It has trained him to see
the highest truth. Thus God’s revelation comes to the prepared soul. Suddenly the black clouds are rent asunder, and the
much-suffering man looks right up to the eternal blue, while the very light of God illumines and transfigures his countenance.
Clearly, Job is thinking of God. He knows that though he cannot understand God’s present treatment of him, he will be
ultimately delivered if he trusts in God. Although it was not given to Job to see further in this direction, we now know that his
great hope and prophecy is fulfilled in Christ, who has come to be the sinner’s God the great redeemer of man.
Is Christ your Great Redeemer? If not, He is waiting to be your Great Redeemer. Derrell Hart
Cooking & Delivering Meals to Our Shut Ins:
This is a new idea that is being tried out for two Wednesdays. The first date takes place this Wednesday (22nd). The benevolent fund will cover the food for these two meals. The meals will be cooked at the building and delivered by some of the members. If you are interested in helping cook or deliver these meals to our shut ins, please sign up on the sheet located on the information table. Rhonda Crabtree is heading up this work in case you have any questions. Thanks!
Shirley Kriegel has been working hard to make one jar of her famous strawberry jelly for each Meadows family. All she asks is for you to enjoy it (in case this is the last time she is physically able to do this) and please return the jar with the ring (just in case she can do it again). Thanks Shirley, we love
you and your famous jelly!!!!!
