Anti-trust suit (1949 –56) AT&T agrees to restrict its activities to the regulated business of the national telephone system and government work.

U.S. vs. AT&T (1974 – 1982) divests wholly owned Bell operating companies that provided local exchange service.

January 1, 1984 AT&T goes from $149.5 billion to $34 billion in assets; 1,009,000 to 373,000 employees. Famous Bell logo and name changes to a stylized globe and "AT&T."

AT&T's market share falls from over ninety percent in 1984 to around fifty percent in 1996.

  Competitive pressure, new technologies (primarily

fiber optic transmission) result in prices dropping by an average of forty percent by the end of the 1980s.

1984: 37.5 million 1989: 105.9 million 1999: 270 million.

1991: Acquired NCR as communications and computing converged.

1994: Acquired McCaw Cellular and established AT&T in wireless telecommunications.
