Guidelines

Your app needs to work. You can present static screen concepts, but they will not be judged for prizes. Winning apps that function as described will be selected at the sole discretion of our judges and weighted heavily based on the following 3 criteria:

• Ability to clearly articulate what your app does

• Originality of the idea/concept

• Technically creative and/or challenging implementation

1. Judging Criteria

Page 11: AT&T Public Sector Hackathon

Smart Cities mean the evolution of municipality decision making from reactionary, based on historic data, to proactive based on real-time data. Transform data collected from into actionable information enabling intelligent decisions to improve cities within one or more of the following areas:

AT&T Hackathon Scenario 2Develop new innovative applications building on the Internet of

Things in the area of Smart City

• Traffic management

• Garbage collection

• Leak detection

• Lightning

• Utility management

• Parks and recreation

• Ride Sharing

• Public Transportation

Applications should deliver one or more of the following business outcomes:1. Does the application save the Government money?2. Does the application improve the ability to make smart decisions for the city?3. Does the application enable the Government to better or more efficiently use

collected data?4. Does the application improve safety?

Page 21: AT&T Public Sector Hackathon

What is Developer Central?

o Website located at http://developer.epa.gov

o Provides resources for external developers to locate

EPA data sets, reusable components and APIs, code,

widgets, and highlights applications developed by EPA

or using EPA data

o Fully search enabled and users are able to rate

resources they find

o Also includes a developer forum for developers to ask

EPA questions and to communicate with each other

21

Page 22: AT&T Public Sector Hackathon

3 Primary Categories

o Connect

o Contains news and upcoming events and a 2-way

discussion forum focused on answer questions

related to EPA data and APIs.

o Build

o Links to a API and Dataset showcase, code

snippets, widgets and EPA Developers Guidance.

o Innovate

Overview

Worker Protection Standard (WPS)

“The regulation seeks to protect and reduce the risks of

injury or illness resulting from agricultural workers’ (those

who perform hand-labor tasks in pesticide-treated crops,

such as harvesting, thinning, pruning) and pesticide

handlers’ (those who mix, load and apply pesticides) use

and contact with pesticides on farms, forests, nurseries

and greenhouses.”

revisions

Page 25: AT&T Public Sector Hackathon

Overview

◦ The Worker Protection

Standard is triggered when

pesticides which are

registered with EPA for

agricultural use are used.

◦ Someone submitting a

complaint could be concerned

with requirements ranging

from direct exposure to

pesticides to a lack of posted

safety information.

Page 26: AT&T Public Sector Hackathon

Application Goals

◦ Ability for a farm worker to easily report a possible pesticide worker

safety violation to their local State Environmental Protection

Agency using a mobile app. The State EPA should be able to update

where they wish to receive the report.

◦ Designed in such a way where non native English speakers can

easily use the application.

◦ Ability for farm workers to receive updates on the status of their

submission.

◦ Ability for the receiving State EPA to view and respond to

submissions.

26

How is this project unique?

Develop ways for illiterate and non-native English speakers to submit potential violation

information to the appropriate individuals.

FitBit for your

Car

Page 28: AT&T Public Sector Hackathon

Overview

o Get the best gas mileage

from your car or truck

and become a

“Hypermiller” while

helping the environment!

o What you drive, how you

drive, and what fuel you

use can impact both the

environment and your

pocketbook.

Overview

EPA Green Vehicle Guide GHG scoring

◦ This rating reflects vehicle tailpipe emissions of carbon

dioxide (CO2), the most prevalent greenhouse gas

(GHG). CO2 emissions typically constitute 99% of the

tailpipe emissions of greenhouse gases.

29

Page 30: AT&T Public Sector Hackathon

Application Goals

◦ This mobile app will use EPA’s Green Vehicle Guide GHG scoring to

match vehicles and truly pit the skills of the eco-drivers against each

other.

◦ The result is using our competitive nature to influence driving

behavior and, perhaps, even convince someone to upgrade to the next

“mpg competition class.”

◦ Allow users to share the most efficient route and encourage them to

use various tips and techniques to reduced gas usage.

Additional task:

Use information from the car’s OBD-II On-Board Diagnostic System to

determine the actual fuel efficiency along a route over time

30

How is this project unique?

Experiment with building a OBD mobile app.

Augmented Reality

Facility Data

Mobile Application

Page 32: AT&T Public Sector Hackathon

Overview

o View information that EPA has on facilities by pointing

a smartphone camera directly at the facility

o Information can include chemicals reported to the EPA

and air emissions from power plants

32

Source: Transmedia Newswire

Page 33: AT&T Public Sector Hackathon

Application Goals

◦ This mobile app will use Facility Registry Service (FRS) and

Emissions & Generation Resource Integrated Database (eGRID) data

to obtain information on what facilities are nearby and information that

EPA has about those facilities.

◦ Potential users include first responders, inspectors,

interested/concerned citizens etc.

33

How is this project unique?

Use of augmented reality to display information from EPA’s APIs
