    1. Ask yourself : * Why do you like to make art? * What subjects do you prefer? Why? * What processes and techniques do you use? Why? * How is your work dierent from others? * What do you see in your artwork? * What do other people say they see? * Who or what inspires you?

    2. How to begin

    Write a three paragraph ar&sts statement. Keep your sentences authen&c and concise. Use the present tense (I am, not I was, I do, not I did.) Talk yourself up: say nice things about yourself and your work. As a rule, your ar&sts statement should be wriNen in the rst person. Refer to yourself with the pronouns I, me, my. If this blocks you, write in the third person, then go back and change the pronouns as needed. Write three to ve sentences per paragraph.

    3. Basic structure First paragraph: Begin with a simple statement of why you do the work you do. Support that statement, telling the reader more about your goals and aspira&ons. Second paragraph: Tell the reader how you make decisions in the course of your work. How and why do you select materials, techniques, themes? Keep it simple and tell the truth. Third paragraph: Tell the reader a liNle more about your current work. How it grew out of prior work or life experiences. What are you exploring, aNemp&ng, challenging by doing this work.
