The Best Summer of Your Life

It was a typical pastoral hospital visit – until I

stepped onto the elevator. Sharing the elevator

with me was a hospital employee who, it turns out,

worked with me years ago at Lake Chautauqua

Lutheran Center. Now an army veteran and em-

ployed at the hospital, he was eager to talk about

the camp and the staff members we had both

known. “How’s Jim?” he asked eagerly. “And what-

ever happened to Steve and Michelle?” Although he

had only worked at the camp for eight weeks one

summer – and had never been back since – LCLC

was clearly near and dear to his heart.

As the elevator door opened, he turned to me

and declared, “That was the best summer of my

life.” And I guess that said it all: how one short

summer could make such an impact on a young

man’s life.

I started going to LCLC as a camper in 1968.

And I guess I never really left. It is, and I pray, will

always be, a place of Sabbath rest for me. Where

God not only speaks to me but listens as well. A

place where I can see the love of Christ on the

faces of children and adults as they swim and sail

and laugh and play in the beauty of God’s

creation. It’s not just a “camp;” rather, it is a living

piece of the Church, a “place apart,” where

ministry happens, where the Gospel is shared, and

where one short summer can make a difference

in someone’s life.

This summer might be a good time for each of

us to consider lifting up thanks for the gift of

Lutheran camping ministry – and to stop by and

see the place where you can have the best summer

of your life.

Summer Blessings,

Pastor Gail

CHILDREN’S MOMENT THIS SUMMER:

PARABLES

All children are invited to participate in

a special Children’s Moment Series

continuing for 8 weeks in July and August.

Everyone likes a good story, and we will be

hearing some of the wonderful stories

Jesus told in the form of parables. Come

and join us as we learn about a wise man

who built his house upon a rock….a runa-

way son and his forgiving father…and the

possibilities of what a tiny mustard seed

can become!

SUNDAY SCHOOL

We look forward to the beginning of

another Sunday School program starting

with an exciting Rally Day on September

We will be asking for parent help. Please

contact Kathy Heinig at 387-8904.

Summer Stars

A quiet sense of oneness

ripens in me as I gaze

into evening’s summer sky.

I behold this endless space

filled with sparkling lights,

speaking of a world unknown,

luring my heart into mystery...

When I doubt your presence

I need only step into the night

and behold the stars beyond me.

One look assures me of presence.

One gaze enwraps me with awe.

CONGREGATIONAL CARE

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

We have begun using new name

tags on Sunday mornings. One

feature of the new name tag is a

larger font has been used for first

names. This will make it easier to

read your name from a distance.

Another feature of the new tags is

a magnetic backing.....easier to

use and no worries about putting a

hole in your fine clothes. The one

drawback of this is if you have a

pacemaker, you will not be able to

use the magnetic feature; we do

have holders with pin backs as

well. If you need assistance with

your name tag for any reason,

please see Barb Sanko.

ORANGE CONES

A new catch basin cover was fabricated

for the east parking lot. That has not

solved the problem, which we now trace to

the design of the basins and covers. Fur-

ther repair is on hold until we decide what

to do about repairs for the entire parking

lot. We are obtaining contractor estimates.

DOOR AND WINDOW REMINDER

check for open windows and unlocked

doors in the church building – and close

and lock them - before you leave. Thank

you

NEW CHURCH DIRECTORY IS COMING

Our church directory will be updated in

August. Help us update our directory by

checking your name and information in the

draft copy located in the narthex and make

any changes necessary.
