What is DNA? a series of base pairs that fit together to form a double helix...
What are base pairs?
EVERYTHING, including living things,
is made of ATOMS!!!!

What do you think an atom is?
An atom is the smallest unit of an element that still retains the properties of the element. They are composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons. The number of protons in an atom determines the identity of the atom
1 atom of gold and a sheet of gold foil have the same properties.

To identify elements, we count the number of protons in the nucleus. Each element has a specific number of protons, denoted by the ATOMIC NUMBER.
The ATOMIC MASS tells us the total mass of the element, based primarily on the combined number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.

Ions while protons and neutrons will stay in the nucleus, electrons can be transferred between atoms. If an atom GAINS an electron, it gains a NEGATIVE charge. If an atom LOSES and electron, it gains a POSITIVE CHARGE. These charged atoms are called IONS

Isotopes recall that an element must have a consistent number of protons, but the number of neutrons may vary. Since neutrons and protons BOTH combine to make up the mass of an atom, one element can have multiple masses

Isotopes
Atoms with the same number of protons, but different numbers of neutrons and therefore different atomic masses.
(Remember neutrons and protons make up most of the mass of an atom since electrons are so small by comparison)
