Which Water System?

COMBINATION BOILER HIGH PRESSURE INSTANTANEOUS GAS-HEATED SYSTEMCommonly known as a Combi-boiler, this system heats your water up as soon as you turn the shower or hot tap on. This system supplies the water at high pressure. In most cases a high-pressure water system has a water pressure between 1 and 5 bar.

LOW PRESSURE GRAVITY-FED SYSTEMThis is the most common household system in the UK. It utilities a cold-water tank (cistern) in your loft and a hot water tank (cylinder) in your airing cupboard to supply your home with hot and cold water.

To create the pressure required for the shower, water is fed by gravity from the cold-water tank. The greater the distance between the bottom of the tank and the top of the shower head, the better the showers performance.

The minimum distance required for a shower to operate is usually 1 meter from the bottom of the tank in the loft.

PUMPED GRAVITY-FED SYSTEM (HIGH PRESSURE)Essentially a gravity-fed system, but by adding a suitable booster pump water is delivered to your shower at high pressure and thereby creating a better performance.

The water pressure will depend on the pump but in most cases this will be between 1 bar and 3 bar. You may need to increase the capacity of your hot and cold-water tanks.

UNVENTILATED HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEMThis system stores hot water under pressure in a large cylinder. The expansion vessel on top of the cylinder and the absence of a cold water tank can help identify this system. This system supplies water at high pressure.

NB: In a refurbished property, an unused cold-water tank may have been left in place.
