South Florida’s Regional Efforts
Tri-Rail (South Florida’s commuter rail system) was created as a mitigation strategy for expansion of I-95 in the late 1980s
SunGuide (South Florida’s regional ITS/Traffic Management Center) was created in the mid 1990s
2000 Census defined the Miami Urbanized Area as Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties
Southeast Florida Transportation Council (SEFTC) was created in 2005 to serve as a formal forum for policy coordination and communication to carry out regional initiatives
After a decade of ongoing regional freight planning efforts, the first Southeast Florida Regional Freight Plan was developed in 2010

Miami-Dade County has Actively Engaged in Freight Planning Since the Mid 1990s
Miami-Dade MPO developed its first Freight Plan in 1996 – the first in the state
Other studies: port access, truck parking, truck management techniques, key freight corridors
Miami-Dade has partnered with Broward and Palm Beach MPOs to develop a comprehensive Regional Freight Program
Miami’s Freight Transportation Advisory Committee formed in 2002.
This work complements Florida’s Freight Mobility and Trade Plan under development, as well as the Seven-50 HUD Grant project underway in South Florida
