Easy. That’s not a word that
typically comes to mind when
planning a major kitchen or
bath renovation, but we’re
hoping to change that with
our comprehensive 2012
Kitchen & Bath Planner. There’s
nothing easier than fi lling in
your answers to our planning
questions, covering everything
from storage needs to cabinet
styles. And putting some time
into thinking about what you want and need in a kitchen
or bath will make you a contractor’s dream. In addition
to making important decisions about your future space,
you will also fi nd valuable resources that will help you
make your dreams a reality such as the latest kitchen
and bath trends and the real costs of materials.
I hope you will have as much of a ball as I did scoping
out the items featured in our Kitchen & Bath Product
Guide. These products are making waves in the design
world and may be just the extra little something you
have been looking for. Just think of all the hours of
research you will be saving. Easy!
The kitchen and bath bonanza doesn’t end there. We
take things a step further with a look at some of the
most recent kitchen and bath makeovers as well as
the role of glass elements in kitchens and bath design.
Here you will fi nd ideas that can take your remodel
from standard to stunning. And don’t forget the local
designers, remodelers and contractors that make it all
look so easy. With a certifi ed professional on your side,
success is within reach. With something as major as
a kitchen or bath remodel, you don’t want to take any
chances. Consider this an invitation to let someone else
do something for you for once. You won’t regret it.

What features should be

Mariel Hemingway Makes Guest Appearance at Cambria Color LaunchOscar-nominated actress Mariel Hemingway was in Atlanta Oct. 13
to support the launch of Cambria’s new Waterstone Collection of manufactured quartz countertops.
The event, hosted by Atlanta Kitchen, Inc., at Atlanta’s Eclipse di Luna restaurant, featured full slabs of the new countertop colors as well as a fashion show featuring dresses made
with Cambria quartz paper samples. Inspired by the movement of water over stone, the new countertop collection offers both neutral and bold tones in patterns that are reminiscent of granite and marble. For more information, visit www.cambriausa.com.

SpaceMakers, an authorized ORG dealer and custom residential and commercial storage specialist, bringing more than 55 years of combined industry experience to the company. Barbara Snook, who has previously worked for several local closet organization and home storage businesses, has been named sales manager, leading the design division. The new design consultants, including Linda Abraham, Tracy Davis, Janet Lewis and Starr Pirkle, all have strong backgrounds in designing and planning closet spaces for Atlanta area homeowners and will provide complimentary design consultations. Ryan Vannoy, general manager of SpaceMakers, says the new hires represent the company’s continued growth and success, which he attributes to its effi cient processes and quality products. “Throughout the entire experience from consulting, design and installation, we are focused on delivering exactly what the customer wants, when and how they want it,” Vannoy says. “Because our products are manufactured in a state-of-the-art facility with a typical three-day lead time, we can provide customers with solutions quickly, affordably and with a quality level that is unmatched in the industry.” Visit www.spacemakersclosets.com for

New Kitchen and Bath Design Centers Open Atlanta area homeowners now have two new places to check out when remodeling a kitchen or bath. In Atlanta, Cowan Supply has moved to a 4,000 square-foot showroom at 3032 Bankers Industrial Drive, Suite A, where visitors can get design ideas and compare products fi rst-hand. Showroom manager Mike MacFarlane and in-house designer and local National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) president Lenia Pilkonis, CKD, CBD, were on hand to celebrate the company’s grand opening Sept. 28 and 29. For more information, visit www.cowansupply.com.
In Alpharetta, United Corp International, an Atlanta-based kitchen and bath manufacturer, importer and distributor, has opened its newest design center at 793 N. Main Street. Kitchen and bath displays showcase the company’s custom cabinetry as well as cabinetry from Wellborn and Spazzi and exotic granite imported from Brazil and Italy. Owners Tony Sadri and Nima Afzali hosted a gala event for industry professionals and community leaders on Oct. 6 during its grand opening. For more information, visit www.unitedcorpintl.com.
Local Builder Wins National Deck Award Decks and More, Inc., a deck builder based in Smyrna, received an award in the “Best Wood Deck Under 500 sq. ft.” category at the recent National Deck Competition in Chicago. The competition is an awards program sponsored by The North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA). MAKEOVERSKitchen and bath remodels transform the mood and style of the home
By Tara N. Wilfong
ew living spaces make more of an impact in the home than kitchens and baths.
These well-used areas present huge opportunities for remodeling projects, breathing
new life into tired spaces and increasing enjoyment of the home. With Atlanta area
homeowners staying put longer, many are turning to highly personalized kitchen and
bath remodels to get more out of their current living space.

What began as a simple discussion
about enlarging a window space to bring
in more light quickly turned into a full-
scale kitchen makeover that combined
modern conveniences with historical
authenticity. The Midtown bungalow,
owned by contractor Chris Jones of
HR Construction, had character, but
lacked personality and functionality
in the kitchen. “The kitchen was grim;
it was cramped and didn’t circulate
well,” says Steve Robinson, principal of
Axios Architecture. “We envisioned a
space that would not only be functional,
but also would provide access to the
beautiful Japanese garden outside.”
With the importance of the garden
connection in mind, Robinson used

large, unencumbered windows to frame
the scenic view and provided direct
access to the space with a signifi cant
wood-and-glass door. Framing the entire
room with cherry wood, he created
texture through the use of light and dark
tones, staining the upper cabinets lighter
than the rich tone of the lower cabinets.
“This use of color and tone creates
subtleties that really make the room
sing,” Robinson says.
Details, such as juxtaposing a circular
breakfast bar with the predominantly
rectangular concrete countertop, took
some convincing, but now provide a cozy
nook for intimate dining as well as an
eye-catching focal point for the kitchen.
Likewise, the custom-fabricated steel range
hood, with its hammered medallions, adds
modern fl air and even more character. “At
fi rst, Chris was concerned with the mix of
materials and colors,” Robinson says. “But
once we discussed it, he agreed that it’s
not necessary for everything to match as
long as it’s creative and the design simply
works.”

Winding down a multi-year, multi-
room remodeling project, in which the
homeowners effectively transformed
their basic ranch from Colonial
Revival to French Provincial style,
one final space still needed updating:
the kitchen. “The existing kitchen
had outlived its useful lifespan,”
says Tracey Rutherford, co-owner of
Pantheon Design-Build. “We needed to
bring it up to the caliber of the rest of
the house.”
To create the illusion of a larger
space without changing the original
footprint of the kitchen, the builders
began by vaulting the ceiling into the
attic. The French Provincial influence
that extends throughout the home

is reinforced in the kitchen with the
addition of decorative cedar beams
that define the lofty new ceiling and
complement those in an adjacent room.
A dramatic triple window installed
above the sink along with a pair of
generous glass-paned doors provides an
indoor-outdoor connection and floods
the room with natural light.
A clean color scheme consisting of
creams and barely-gray whites makes
the kitchen appear more expansive,
while the original floor, stained a
deep espresso, is the perfect foil to
the room’s pale palette. Simple white
Shaker-style cabinets with Carerra
marble countertops and a black cast-
iron La Cornue range anchor the
design. “The homeowners love to cook,
and they use their kitchen every day,”
Rutherford says. “In this limited space,
we combined versatile appliances,
elegant materials and unique details
to enrich the homeowners’ gourmet
experience and create a kitchen worthy
of entertaining.”

With in-town living, often what you gain
in location, you lose in space. Smaller
homes on smaller lots are the norm, but
the locale more than makes up for this
concession. When Mark Galey, president
of Magnet Construction, was called on
to remodel the kitchen of an in-town
modular home, he found a lot of house
with a very little kitchen. “It was like
walking into a small cube,” Galey says.
“The entire kitchen was enclosed, and
there was no fl ow to the remainder of the
home.”
Desiring an open, functional kitchen
with space for entertaining, the
homeowners wanted to fuse European
infl uences with a contemporary feel.
Removing the walls, Galey placed a

stainless steel countertop on one side
of the kitchen and a rich soapstone
countertop on the other side to give
the homeowners the contemporary
edge they wanted. Stark subway tiles
and simple cabinets help delineate the
space, while horizontal, white-washed
cedar planks emphasize a custom wine
rack. Open shelving keeps visual clutter
to a minimum while providing needed
storage space.
To compensate for the limited seating,
Galey custom built a banquette out of
plywood and stained it to match the
deep tones that accent the kitchen.
Unique lighting, such as the cascading
globe pendants above the soapstone
countertop and the oil-rubbed bronze
lantern illuminating the wine rack,
differentiates each area of the kitchen.
“The homeowners wanted the kitchen
to be relaxed. They didn’t want it to
look fussy,” Galey says. “All the different
elements and details combined give the
kitchen a character that truly portrays the
way the owners live.”

Undergoing a townhouse redo,
designer Robert Kauffman, owner
of Kauffman Design, tackled his
own master bathroom as a personal
project. Classifying the interior as
“bland,” Kauffman decided to ramp
up the design and infuse the space
with a contemporary look. “In this
room in particular, I wanted a simple,
straightforward design that would
highlight the materials,” he says. “So
we pushed it as much toward modern
as we could.”
With a bend toward contrasting
materials, Kauffman used basic travertine
tile to create the foundation of the space

and added a visual punch with warm
black walnut. Entering the 100 square-
foot bath, the eye is drawn immediately
to the bathtub, which is artfully framed
by walnut posts and illuminated by a
suspended pendant light.
Adding contemporary lines, Kauffman
built box-like cabinets out of the same
walnut material, mounted them on the
wall and topped them with industrial-
looking concrete countertops. “Black
walnut is my favorite wood, so I knew
this room would contain a lot of that
material,” he says. “I also added six
different shades of aggregate to the
concrete for a uniform texture that
would contrast the rich grain of the
walnut. This entire project has been
about creating something special for
my wife and I, and it’s one I’ve attacked
with all my passion.”

With small children in the mix, a 1920s
Virginia Highland bungalow was in
desperate need of more usable living
space, namely a master suite. Not
wanting to detract from the character
of the home, the homeowners quickly
ruled out an addition, opting instead
to re-imagine the space in their large
attic. “Working within the existing
roofl ine posed some spatial challenges,”
says Ryan Howard, project manager at
Cablik Enterprises. “But, it also forced
us to think about the layout from a
purely functional standpoint so that we
could use every bit of space to its fullest
potential.”

In the master bath, with its wainscoting
reminiscent of days gone by, the project
team creatively tucked a shower enclosure
illuminated by an eco-friendly skylight
beneath sloping rafters. Remaining
true to the home’s bungalow style, they
incorporated a modern cast-iron tub with
a vintage appeal. Behind it, a large picture
window is strategically placed to bring in
natural light while maintaining privacy
(The neighbors can’t see in.)
Although the room is too small to have
large his-and-hers vanities, the concept
was creatively adapted to the space with
two back-to-back pedestal sinks rather than
the traditional side-by-side layout. Topping
off the whimsical look, the bathroom fl oor
is covered in tiny black-and-white hexagon-
shaped tiles that give it a polka-dot effect.
“Everything was devised to maintain that
original character of the house,” Howard
says. “Aesthetically we wanted it to appear
old, but with modern conveniences.”

Obsession:Obsession:Surface Surface
Creative glass applications steal the scene in kitchens and baths
By Carla Schwartz
Imagine the features of a perfect kitchen or bath: serene and sparkling clean. Every surface is both durable and
beautiful. Sound impossible? There’s a clear solution that might surprise—glass. Glass is a timeless natural
material, yet it is at the forefront of current home trends and more dynamic than ever. Using glass instead
of other common kitchen and bath materials such as granite, ceramic tile and marble, for example, is fresh and
unexpected. Here’s why:
In today’s kitchens and baths, glass materials come in a range of colors, textures and forms, providing delicacy or
heft where needed. Translucent glass adds structure without increasing visual surface area. When extra pizzazz
is needed, look no further than back-painted glass or a stunning glass chandelier. Local design and remodeling
professionals as well as glass manufacturers are using the material in some creative ways, with great results.

Artistic and Eco-friendlyVetrazzo recycled glass surfaces transform discarded
glass bottles into luxurious conversation pieces. “If
you look at the recycled glass surface industry, there is
nothing that looks like Vertrazzo,” says brand manager
Mary Warner. “Vetrazzo surfaces utilize a much larger
glass aggregate, so it’s more jewel-like, and it doesn’t
look like a quartz product.” The look is clean but colorful
with a high-end, high-defi nition shimmer. The dazzling
material can be applied to entire rooms or just to sinks,
islands, tubs, showers, etc. More than just superior
craftsmanship, Vetrazzo adheres to a strict set of earth-
friendly practices, including sourcing recycled materials
and its manufacturing facility locally.
Cool As IceSome of today’s glass effects have never been
seen before and use technology to push the
limits of design. Debuting at this year’s Kitchen
& Bath Industry Show, ThinkGlass by Mailhot
can be used in a variety of kitchen and bath
applications and offers custom textures, colors,
thicknesses and weights. But perhaps the most
staggering design option is LED illumination,
which gives the recyclable glass an ethereal,
water-like glow. When colored light illuminates
the glass, it becomes an eye-catching design
element. On top of the aesthetic appeal,
ThinkGlass is also functional for everyday use.
A textured fi nish is applied to the glass to hide
fi ngerprints and smudges, annual sealing is not
required, and the non-porous surface is resistant
to stains, scratches, mold and mildew.

Raise Your GlassBecky Sue Becker, CKD, CBD, CAPS and principal of Designs by BSB in Atlanta,
uses clear glass in kitchens to add unobtrusive countertop space. Becker has
added height and functionality to kitchen counters by topping them with bar-
level raised-glass surfaces. At fi rst glance, the glass is barely visible, keeping
the feel of the kitchen open and not weighed down by additional dark
fi nishes. The technique, however, creates usable space both on and under the
glass counter. According to Becker, raised-glass countertops “give a level of
interest, yet do not divide space or steal the view!”

Bright and White A variety of glass treatments was used in a recent bath
project by Mark Galey, president and founder of Magnet
Construction. Both the shower and a bathroom door feature
frosted glass for privacy, the latter cleverly labeled “WC” and
accessorized with a faceted glass door knob that resembles
a fi st-sized crystal. The expansive frosted glass panels softly
fi lter light and lend a peaceful feel to the bath. Adding
shimmer and shine thanks to an abundance of natural light
and a crisp white color palette are two exterior windows,
chunky glass wall blocks, mirrors and chrome hardware.

Top 10 Kitchen & Bath Design TrendsAfter determining the winners of the 2011 NKBA Design Competition, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) identifi ed the following as the 10 most popular design trends of the year.1. Commitment to Color Commitments to color are growing.
Vibrant colors can be introduced through a backsplash of back-painted glass in a strong hue. Green specifi cally is gaining ground in bathrooms this year. Though many people still use beiges and tans, green is quickly becoming the frontrunner of color choice.
2. Tactile Appeal through Textures Lines, colors and patterns can act as either a point of interest or a mellow background. The effect of a patterned area rug can be simulated with inset oversized glass mosaic tile. Custom-made glass keystone tiles create a quilted effect and add a shimmering surface to shower walls.
3. The Attributes of Glass Glass has emerged as a major design element in kitchens and baths this year. Use one color to create a cohesive environment or mix for pops of color all over. Combine with light to take glass in a whole new direction.
4. Freestanding and Angled Tubs Large, freestanding tubs are taking over bathroom designs. Rounded, rectangular and angled tubs are an artistic accent with an added bonus: a soothing soak. Whether situated on stones, wood fl ooring or a platform, the freestanding soaking tub is an integral part of many bathrooms today.
5. Espresso and Chocolate in Cabinetry Deep hues of chocolate and espresso are covering cabinet doors and drawer fronts. Natural fi nishes—absent of glazing and distressing—are now found in many kitchen designs, as simple chocolate browns act as the smooth and understated partner to brighter accents.
6. Walk-in Pantries With the demand for wall space (rather than wall cabinets) in popular open-plan kitchens, alternative pantry and storage solutions are increasingly required. Sinks, additional workspace, dish storage and food storage are being placed in separate walk-in pantries that match the main kitchen design, creating a seamless look.
7. Detailed Ceilings Ceilings are one of the newest ways to update kitchens and baths. From rustic beams to faux fi nishes, defi ned architectural features add interest. Eye-catching light fi xtures and lighting techniques draw attention upward, making the room’s “fi fth wall” the star of the show.
8. Natural Elements The use of natural elements in kitchen and bath design remains a trend. Try polished stone with leather-accented cabinetry or drawer pulls. Use backlighting with translucent crystal formations on the walls or countertops for an opulent look.
9. A Tiered Approach to Proportion Stacking and mixing heights and depths adds visual appeal to kitchens today. Raised and overlapping island countertop surfaces and offset pantries are just a few examples of the asymmetrical approach.
10. Inlaid Flooring Inlaid fl ooring is adding richness, texture and color to traditional surfaces. Designers and installers are being called on to provide innovation as materials are selected and fl ooring is installed. Hand-fi t pieces to mimic the look of more elaborate fl oors, such as parquet, are common.

Kitchen LayoutsAccording to the NKBA’s guidelines, there are four basic kitchen layouts: galley, L-shape, U-shape and G-shape. How each layout functions is based on the concept of the work triangle, or the distance between the three main work areas: sink, cooktop and refrigerator. For maximum effi ciency, the work triangle should follow these guidelines:
Galley (two wall)The galley consists of two facing walls and usually is found in condos and apartments. The work triangle is effi cient, but the aisle between the two countertops is narrow. This option is a good plan for one cook.
U-shapeThe U-shape kitchen uses three walls, or two walls with an attached peninsula. This layout is very effi cient because it allows the cook to pivot among the stations, provides excellent storage and can accommodate two cooks. A center island often is included in the larger versions of this plan.
L-shapeIn this kitchen design, two perpendicular walls contain the three main elements—sink, cooktop and refrigerator—to create a natural triangle. The L-shape kitchen generally will have ample counter space and lends itself to the inclusion of an island.
G-shapeThis option is basically a U-shaped kitchen with a fourth wall, which is usually opposite the sink and contains additional appliances, a pantry or a desk. Generally one of the largest layouts, the G-shape allows for more amenities than any other layout.

Tamper-resistant receptacles look the same as a standard receptacle. They are made with shutters specifi cally designed
to allow a two- or three-prong plug to enter while
preventing other objects such as nails, forks, keys,
etc., from penetrating.
The National Electrical Code (NEC) for 2008 requires
tamper-resistant receptacles in all new homes in
participating jurisdictions. Georgia adopted the
code in January 2009. Not only are tamper-resistant receptacles required in new
construction, but also they are required for any electrical renovation or electrical
outlet replacement. That means all 125-volt and 15- and 20-ampere electrical
receptacles in single- and multi-family homes must be tamper-resistant.
Remember that the extra cost of installing tamper-resistant receptacles is
minimal compared to saving a child from harm. Every year in the United States,
roughly 2,400 children suffer from electric shocks and burns when they insert an
electrically conductive object such as a coin into a wall outlet. Just take a look at
these percentages:
• 89% of children injured by an electrical outlet are under 6 years old
• 50% of those children are toddlers
• Most incidents occur while an adult is present
Here are some more reasons why tamper-resistant receptacles are a safe decision:
• They are a permanent solution and offer continuous protection. Their counterparts,
plastic outlet caps, can be removed by most toddlers within 10 seconds.
• Shutter wall plates, which slide, add layers of material between the plug blades
and receptacle contacts.
• Tamper-resistant receptacles are certifi ed and tested by Underwriters
Laboratories (UL). These receptacles must be clearly marked with “TR” on the
receptacle face, making them easy to identify.
• All major receptacle manufacturers offer tamper-resistant receptacles at a cost
only slightly higher than comparable standard receptacles. The National Electrical
Manufacturers Association (NEMA) estimates the total increased cost per average
home to be less than $50.
If you are interested in installing tamper-resistant electrical receptacles in your
home, contact a local electrician, and make sure the product to be used comes from
a reputable manufacturer. For more information on tamper-resistant receptacles,
visit www.childoutletsafety.org.

Jeff Foxworthy’s popular game show “Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?” gives everyone plenty of laughs. There are few laughs involved, however, in the game of wits between dedicated bird feeders and Mr. Bushytail. In this longstanding feud, we humans come up on the short side more often than not. And that’s in the face of a well-developed industry that makes its money convincing us that we can indeed keep squirrels out of our birdfeeders. Frankly, no single strategy is likely to be successful. A combination of impediment, unpalatability and alternative temptation is required to even reduce depredation by these Vikings of the treetops.
Impediment is the fi rst line of defense. Today’s sophisticated squirrel-proof birdfeeders use a couple of approaches to reduce squirrel access. Location alone can be an impediment. Hanging feeders require squirrels to negotiate thin cords to achieve their goal, and hanging the feeder from a springy limb at least 8 or 10 feet from the trunk further increases the diffi culty. Lightweight armatures attached to deck rails or standards provide a similar level of diffi culty.
Post feeders can be located so that aerial access is practically impossible, and cone baffl es, theoretically, thwart a ground attack. The cone baffl e and the domed feeder cover are supposed to so complicate the issue that squirrels will seek easier pickings. Adding one of the anti-squirrel lubricants to the surface of the dome or baffl e multiplies the deterrent. Another option is to enclose the feeder so that only fl ying birds can enter the feeding area. Until your squirrels fi gure out that they can gnaw their way through just about any birdfeeder material, your birds can enjoy the feast uninterrupted.
Making the table fare unpalatable to squirrels is another approach. You may limit the bird species when you choose bird feed types that are not particularly attractive to squirrels. Generally, the larger the seeds, the more attractive they are to mammals. Thistle will get you fi nches but not squirrels, nor doves, nor cardinals, etc. There are also squirrel repellants. Frequently based on predator urine, these preparations make the area seem dangerous to the interloper without having the same effect on the birds. The idea is that birds consider themselves less of a prey item to ground-bound carnivores.
Adding alternative temptation will make the above tactics more effective and provide an opportunity to enjoy squirrel antics without decimation of the birdseed supply. Purpose-built squirrel feeders, located at a distance from the birdfeeders, are an effective bribe. Put in a sacrifi cial tomato plant. Squirrels really seem to like the feel, the size and the red or green color of this fruit. They never eat the whole thing, so I don’t think they like the taste, but as long as it keeps them occupied, it’s okay by me.

Obsession:Surface
Local design and remodeling
professionals as well as glass manufacturers are pushing the limits of the material, with great results.

Expert Q&A
A:
What features should be
considered for custom
cabinetry?
“When moving to
full custom cabinetry,
the homeowner has
virtually unlimited
options to personalize
the project. Pick a
color, match a piece
of furniture or bring a
picture of an item you
love and a good custom
cabinetmaker can give
you what you want.
Integrate technology
into your cabinetry
by including charging
stations, computer
or iPad mounts,
security monitors or
whole-house controls.
Add hidden areas to
store valuables when
away from home. Be
imaginative. With
custom cabinetry you
can move ‘beyond the
box,’ selecting finishes,
sizes and specific
features that make your
space truly yours.”
