ATLANTA FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT
COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION
COMPARTMENT 023 ENTRY YEAR: 2011
Compartment Acreage: 1713 County: Montmorency
Revision Date: September 24, 2009 Stand Examiner: Barber Legal Description: T30N, R02E, Sec. 17, 20, 21, 28, 29, 30 RMU (if applicable): Management Goals: Regenerate oak; manage peaks in aspen age class distribution. Soil and Topography: rolling, often steep hills. PArVHa/PArVVb, and wetlands dominate, but includes PVCd, and AFO. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: Other state land, and second/rural homes. Farmland lies to the north. Unique, Natural Features (include only non-site specific and non-sensitive information): One or more occurrences have been reported for this compartment. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features (include only non-site specific and non-sensitive information): One or more occurrences have been reported for this compartment. Special Management Designations or Considerations: None. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Barger Creek and the upper Thunder Bay River both intersect this compartment, and both are wild trout streams less than 50 feet wide; mimimum buffer width of 300 feet recommended; AOI’s along Bass and McCormick lakes noted, no clear cut along the lakes and no cutting of
trees larger than 4 inches DBH within 25 feet of waters edge; selective cutting within the buffer (to 25ft of waters edge) may be done. . Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Game species likely to be present in this compartment include elk, white-tailed deer, black bear, coyote, red fox, bobcat, and raccoon, woodcock, ruffed grouse, and wood duck.. This compartment also has potential for the following species of greatest conservation need: red-shouldered hawk, Blanding’s turtle, eastern massasauga, wood turtle, bald eagle, Cooper’s hawk, osprey, and northern goshawk, whip-poor-will, wood thrush, southern redbacked vole, hoary bat, northern bat, and deer mouse. Additional species with potential to be present include long-tailed weasel, northern short-tailed shrew, masked shrew, common raven, garter snake, striped skunk, redbelly snake, tiger salamander, and cedar waxwing. Elk sign and browse scattered throughout compartment. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Surface sediments consist of coarse-textured till and glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. The glacial drift thickness varies between 400 and 600 feet. Beneath the glacial drift is the Mississippian Coldwater Shale. There is no known economic use for this shale. A gravel pit is located in Section 22 and potential is good. This area is leased and has been developed for the Antrim Shale. Vehicle Access: Roads to be closed are shown on the compartment map as closed or abandoned. Survey Needs: Surveying will be required to prove trespass, or for timber sale preparation. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: MCCCT, water access site, cold water trout streams. Fire Protection: Adequate. Atlanta VFD. Additional Compartment Information:
The following 5 reports from the Operations Inventory System (OIPC) are attached:

Do not cut red pine, white pine, hemlock or white-cedar, if present. Acceptable regeneration is any combination of aspen, oak, jack pine, red pine, or white pine resulting in a medium or well stocked stand.Use shortwood specs to protect white pine and oak regeneration.Retain 3 to 10 percent of stand area in one or more patches. Location(s) will be determined during sale prep and will be representative of the stand's species mix as a whole.

DEDICATED CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS
Conservation Area SCA = Special Conservation Area
HCVA = High Conservation Value AreaERA = Ecological Reference Area
An aquatic or terrestrial area of the State that contains physical remains of human occupation. These are sites of cultural and historical significance that may occur upon terrestrial areas and Great Lakes bottomlands. They include thousands of Native American settlements and burial sites, as well as French and British outposts, nineteenth century logging camps, mines and homesteads. Beneath the waters of the Great Lakes, there are shipwrecks and other remains documenting the maritime trade. Such sites may be identified by Natural heritage data from the State Historic Preservation Office. Proposed treatments in this compartment will be implemented in such a manner as to maintain the integrity of these sites. Due to the sensitive nature of this information, no further detail about location is available.

A coldwater lake has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species to persist from year to year. Suitable conditions for coldwater fishes may occur in Michigan lakes if they are relatively deep, have substantial groundwater inflows, or are located in colder (northern) areas of the state. Such lakes are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 200.
Cold Water LakeSCA
A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 210.
