What’s New with Acronis® True Image Backup

and Disaster Recovery Software?

Support for every major virtualization platform - We now support virtual machines and fi le formats from Citrix XenServer, joining existing support we introduced recently for VMware, Microsoft and Parallels platforms. Virtualization will continue to grow in importance in 2009. This update gives Acronis users the freedom to choose among virtualization platforms without having to venture outside of the Acronis backup and recovery umbrella.

Enhanced dual destination backup - If enabled, the program will automatically place a copy of each backup being created on a local drive or network share. With this feature, administrators can further protect physical and virtual servers in case the drives holding the original backup suff er physical damage.

Acronis Recovery for Exchange Integration - Users of Acronis Recovery for Exchange — backup and recovery software specifi cally designed for Microsoft Exchange Server — can now access Exchange-specifi c functions from within the Acronis True Image Echo Management Console. This update gives users access to Acronis Recovery for Exchange wizards and tools through the same console they use to manage the rest of their workstations and servers. New also: the ability to restore Exchange dataautomatically after an image restore. This feature speeds restorations or migrations of Exchange servers, even to bare metal machines, reducing the overall management workload in the Exchange environ-ment.

Other new features simplify administration:

The latest release of Acronis True Image not only simplifi es management of your Acronis-protected resources, it also automates several functions:

Resiliency to Failures

Reconnection options will automatically attempt to connect to a group server or backup server if it goes offl ine. Makes servers more resilient to network failures.

Retry unavailable machine if backup can’t be completed. If a backup destination location can’t be reached or is otherwise unavailable, the program will attempt to reach the location at a specifi ed time interval until it can complete the backup. Default retry time is fi ve minutes.

Computer Discovery - in Groups Server, discovery can be restricted to user-defi ned Group Server Options. See all the computers you control from the management console in real time and toggle off those you don’t wish to discover. Determine at a glance which computers are available for backup. You may choose Do not show messages and dialogs while processing (“silent” mode) if you don’t need to see them.

File Exclusion from Image Archives - If you have image fi les or temporary fi les you don’t want to back up, you can exclude them.

Change Security ID (SID) after Restoration is Finished - When you add hardware, you can easily change the security ID over to the new machine as soon as the image has been restored. Requires separately licensed Universal Restore module.

Page 3

FEATURE GUIDE Acronis True Image Echo Family

Domain users can be added to the AcronisBackupServerUsers group on the backup server. This feature addresses the needs of users who need to control administration tasks centrally for effi ciency and security reasons.

Group Server (Windows only) Enhancements:

-Do not search network for new computers checkbox. This performance enhancement allows administrators to toggle on and off resources they’ll be actively backing up and restoring. -Log the fact that Active Restore was used and fi nished. Allows a quick check of an event log to confi rm that a remote restore was completed.

Command Line Enhancements:

Command line tool for Group Server. Allows administrator to refresh the list of computers in Group Server from a text fi le.

Command line tool for Backup Server. An easy way to export Backup Server information – backup fi le names, locations and computer – to an XML fi le. An administrator can easily check to see what backups are being performed.

Enhanced FTP Support - FTP can be used in Active Mode and its default port can be changed. This adds active mode support to existing Basic Mode support.

Additional Acronis True Image Features:

Consolidate your backup archivesManage backup sets easily by consolidating archives. Take control of your images and keep archives from taking up valuable storage space. Consolidate daily, weekly or monthly incremental or diff erential images to new full images. Schedule consolidations to further automate archiving processes.

Automate your backup schedulesAn event scheduling feature allows you to set a threshold on a particular disk: when a certain amount of data has been written, Acronis will automatically trigger a scheduled task to run and initiate the backup process. This works in addition to prescheduled backups to give users a greater measure of data protection in case a failure occurs in between the time a lot of data was written and the time of the next scheduled backup. You may schedule more than one incremental/day. It requires writing a simple script to implement near-continuous data protection, allowing you to back up servers more frequently than once an hour.

Work with Dynamic DisksCreated as a direct result of end-user feedback and requests, Aronis True Image recognizes dynamic disks and includes a dynamic conversion tool which can create dynamic volumes.

Page 4

Further Features:

o Restore Files Without Full Path Name - Speeds fi le recovery.

o Wake on LAN (WOL) support to ensure all machines are backed up on schedule

o Up to 256/AES encryption for the highest level of data security – particularly useful for protecting data that it being transmitted to a remote location

ADDENDUM 1) Acronis Universal Restore®

What is Acronis Universal Restore?

Universal Restore is an option on most True Image products and it’s standard equipment in the True Image Virtual Edition product. Universal Restore allows customers to restore an image to diff erent hardware and to virtual systems.

Why is restoring to diff erent equipment important?

o 44% of data loss is due to system or hardware malfunctions – such situations may require replacement systems, according to industry studies. Frequently it is not possible to restore to an exact duplicate system, since the model may no longer be available.o All organizations face the reality of changing platforms on a regular basis - 28% of businesses replace desktop PCs every three years. Laptops are replaced more frequently - 12% replaced every 2 years and 51% replaced every 3 years, studies say.o And, with the aftermath of IT-wrecking disasters like Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Gustav in 2008 in the US, businesses need to way to recover systems damaged beyond repair by Mother Nature. Ninety-three percent of the companies that lost their data center for 10 days or more fi led for bankruptcy within one year of the disaster and 50% of business that found themselves without data management for this same period of time fi led for bankruptcy immediately.

How does the Universal Restore (UR) feature work?

Step 1: Boot into the Acronis recovery environmentStep 2: Select the image to restore and the system on which the image will be loaded Step 3: UR initiates restore processStep 4: UR detects hardware and installs drivers, detects machine type and installs appropriate drivers for Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), detects hard disk controllers (SCSI and IDE) and other drivers (network card, video cards, sound cards etc.) or Prompts user for driver locations Step 5: Reboot machine and begins mini-setup to load drivers into the Operating System UR keeps Security Identifi er (SID) and network information (domain, workgroup, username, and password).

Universal Restore Scenario #1

An IT manager has a group of servers in an offi ce. Hot spares are kept at that same facility in case a drive, network card or other component is damaged. Due to a torrential rain, the servers, along with the hot spares, are destroyed by fl oods. Fortunately, beforethe disaster occurred, the IT manager created an image of his mission-critical servers using Acronis True Image Enterprise Server. That image was stored off -site on a networked server. When the fl ood destroyed his server room, the IT manager was able to quickly restore the image to a completely diff erent set of servers. Although the hardware was diff erent (diff erent motherboard manufacturer, diff erent NICs, diff erent hard disks, diff erent storage controllers, etc.), the image was restored in minutes at the new location and the company was able to resume operations with minimal disruption.

Universal Restore Scenario #2

A company has a mission-critical server that is running multiple virtual machines. The IT manager needs to move one of the virtual machines to a new physical server that uses diff erent hardware.

Page 13

An image of the virtual server is created and then restored to the new system. During restoration, Acronis® Universal Restore detects the hardware and installs drivers, and the virtual server is soon up and running on the new hardware.

Universal Restore Scenario #3

An IT manager uses Acronis True Image Enterprise Server on one server and a competitor’s product on another. A fi re destroys both servers, both being older models for which there are no exact replacements. He wonders how he can bring the older servers’ images up on new, dissimilar platforms and he has not purchased a universal restoration module from either vendor prior to the fi re. That is no problem for the Acronis server. The manager buys a license for the optional Acronis Universal Restore module, downloads it, installs it on the replacement server, and directs Acronis True Image Enterprise Server to restore the image to new hardware. In minutes the new server is operational.

Alas, nothing can be done to recover the other server after the fact, because that servers’s backup and recovery product requires a universal restoration module to be purchased in advance of a disaster and included in the image in order to recover the image to dissimilar hardware.

2) Acronis Secure Zone® and Recovery Manager

What is the Acronis Secure Zone?

The Acronis Secure Zone allows users to save backups to a special hidden partition on a hard disk drive. The partition is completely separate from the operating system and all applications, and, thus, is unaff ected by any software or operating system malfunctions.

What is the Acronis Recovery Manager?

The Acronis Recovery Manager is a unique feature that enables a user to boot a failed system and initiate recovery by selecting the F11 key. It will work even if the operating system will not boot.

Why are these features important?

Both features enable remote users and traveling users with system protection and recovery that can be initiated from their systems, without needing to carry a standalone storage device or boot media. Moreover, because the product is so easy to use, many users will be able to step through a recovery on the road without having to contact a help desk for assistance.

How do these features work?

Setting up self-service recovery is easy with the Acronis Secure Zone and the Acronis Recovery Manager. Here are the steps: o Install the Acronis True Image agent on a laptop o Create an Acronis Secure Zone on the local machine o Create an image task that saves the image to the Acronis Secure Zone on the local machineFrom that time on, if at any time the laptop won’t boot up, the user simply hits the F11 key on startup and automatically recovers a local image from his or her machine without being connected to the network! No need to carry around a boot disk or separate USB media, either.
