    Welcome to the July Edition. Sorry that there are no Mini Biographies this month due to totally unforeseen problems.

    I have chosen one of the hottest days to publish next season’s Cross-Country fixtures, for those who love to plan

    ahead – there is also a cartoon included about planning a social calender. As last month the Off-Road and Road

    Rankings are at the end after the Press Reports. I have also included the full results for the Summer Handicap Races

    4 and 5 but not 3 as that was more of a fun event even though it was a series scorer.

    Press Reports

    North of England Track and Field League Division 4 East. Due to clashing events just 9 club members competed in the 2

    nd Round in the North of England Track and Field

    League Division 4 E match, that was held at the Tynedale Athletics Park Hexham. Those competing achieved some good results and team points, but the team had to settle for 6

    th place at the match and are now 4

    th overall in the league

    standings. The top scorer at the match was team captain and manager Jenna Wheatman, who competed in 6 ‘A’ events plus the 4 x 100 Metres Relay. Jenna was the winner of the Javelin, Shot and Hammer, 2

    nd Discus, 3

    rd Long Jump and 6

    th 100

    metres. The second highest scorer for the team was Robert Russell who had ‘A’ event wins in the Hammer and Discus, 2

    nd

    ‘A’ Shot and 1st ‘B’ Javelin.

    The second highest scorer of the 4 women at the meeting was Victoria Lockey who backed up the team captain when competing in 5 ‘B’ Field events. She achieved a win in the Hammer, 2

    nd in the Shot and Javelin, 5

    th Long Jump

    and Discus. Caroline Metcalf who made a league debut and Liz Jones who made her league debut at the 1

    st round, competed in

    track events which boosted the overall team score. They both achieved Personal Best (PB) in all of their events. Caroline backed up the team captain in the ‘B’ 100 metres when finishing 7

    th, and then competed in with Liz in 3 ‘A’

    track events finishing 7th 200 metres, 6

    th 400 metres and 5

    th 800 metres. Liz was 7

    The second highest scorer of the 5 men at the meeting was Matthew Burke who generally backed up Rob Russell in ‘B’ Field events, but also achieved a ‘A’ win the Javelin. He was 1

    Sam Cullen repeated his ‘A’ 800 metres win at the opening match, and added good team points a 4

    th 1500 metres.

    Christian Mummert who was competing for the second time in a senior league, backed up Sam Cullen in the 800 metres when winning the ‘B’ race. He was also 5

    th ‘A’ High Jump and 6

    th ‘A’ 200 metres.

    Michael Dowson made a notable seasonal league debut with PBs in both of his events. He was 6

    th ‘A’ 5,000 metres,

    4th ‘B’ 1500 metres and 7

    th ‘A’ Long Jump.

    In the relays, all four of the club women ran a leg of the 4 x 100 metres and scored good team points for 6

    th place. In

    the men’s relays all minus Rob Russell ran a leg of the 4 x 100 metres and 4 x 400 metres. They also scored good team points with 5

    th place in both relays.

    Cleveland Way Relay Race

    Relay Runners at the Hemsley Town finish 14 club members competed in the annual Cleveland Way Relay Race, which consisted of a 110-mile route which started at 0500 hours at Filey and finished at Hemsley. The team made an excellent race debut when finishing 9

    th

    overall of 23 teams in 16 hours 43 minutes despite a major setback during the race. The team members were; Rhona Marshall, Emily Jesson, Andy Messenger, Danny Walls, Jane Hamp, Steve Baldwin, Bob Little, Beckie May, Rob Bailey, Dale Hepples, Owen Willis, Matt Machouki, Paul Butler and Nikki Carr. With 16 runners per team allowed Matt Machouki and Paul Butler both ran two legs. Rhona Marshall ran the 1

    st and longest leg of 14 kilometres from Filey to Scarborough, and after Emily Jesson had

    taken over, the team arrived at Cloughton in 3rd

    place. Team Captain Nikki Carr ran the final leg to the finish. Sue Haslam played an outstanding back-up role over the entire distance. Club Summer Handicap Race 3 78 club members competed in the 3

    rd Round of the club’s Summer Handicap Series, which was based at Scarborough

    Rugby Club, and consisted of a relay race with two per team running over a 3-mile multi terrain course. Each team member ran in opposite direction. and when they met, handed over the ‘baton’ token then returned back the way they came. The first team back was that of Simon Burnley and club newcomer Haley England. Rhona Marshall and Shannon Fletcher were 2

  • Parkruns Sewerby 9 club members took part in the latest Sewerby Parkrun. Michael Dowson finished 1

    st overall of 252, and thus recorded his second overall win at Sewerby

    Dalby Forest 16 club members took part in the latest Dalby Forest Parkrun. Paul Lawton was first for the club when finishing 5

    Thomas Gavin and Katie Wilkinson acted as ‘sweepers’ Hexham Harry Whitehouse took part in the Tyne Green Parkrun at Hexham. He finished 109

    th overall of 329 and 1

    This was his 54th Parkrun at 45 different venues.

    Easingwold. Ruth and Brian Rutt took part in an inaugural Millfield Parkrun at Easingwold. Ruth finished 2

    overall of 111. Brian was 45th overall 2

    9. York Duncan Smart took part in the York Parkrun and finished up in 16

    th overall in 367.

    Humber Bridge Half Marathon 7 club members competed in the 20

    th anniversary running of Humber Bridge Half Marathon, which includes some

    tough sections of climb. On what was adverse hot and windy weather conditions for the race, Ben Langham finished up in 18

    th overall of 1579

    in a personal best time of 87 minutes 37 seconds. Jodene Langham was 90

    th overall of 599 female finishers in 117.00.

  • Josh Naylor Challenge Two of the club’s veteran fell runners took part in the Joss Naylor Challenge, which involves participants completing a 48-mile course which includes 30 summits and a total of 17,000 feet of climb, in extremely demanding time limits dependent on participants age. Nick Coombes and John Bamford who are both aged 60, had an 18-hour target as they set out at 2 a.m. from the Cumbrian village of Pooley Bridge. It is a requirement that contenders are accompanied on every leg for safety reasons and unaccompanied attempts are not recognised. To achieve this, Nikki Carr, Steve Baldwin, Danny Walls, Ricky Parrish, Alan Whelan, Julie Clayton, Jane Hamp, Chris Wood and Dave Etherington shared sections of the route. Nick completed the full course in 17 hours 12 minutes, and John completed 33 miles of the route which included some of the highest peaks. A total of £160 in sponsorship for for the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Group was raised. A record total of 19 junior athletes competed in the third and penultimate round in the Yorkshire and District Track and Field League, which was held at the Princess Mary Stadium Cleckheaton. The most pleasing increase resulted in the highest points haul in the league this season, and just a half point off third team placing. For the first time ever in this league, the total of 11Junior Boys consisting of 6 Under-13 and 5 Under-15 outscored their female counterparts.

Despite some good results by those present which included 5 ‘A’ event wins and several Personal Best performances, the team had to settle for 6

    The top scorer at the meeting was once again the Team Captain and Manager Jenna Wheatman, who was the winner of 3 ‘A’ event wins, namely Hammer, Shot and Javelin. She was also 3

    Shaun and Mel Tymon, Ben Smith and David Field Two club members took part in the latest 401 Foundation of Running, which was held for the first time in Sherwood Forest, following the success of similar annual events in Portishead since 2017. It was organised by Ben Smith (who famously ran 401 marathons in 401 days), to raise funds for his mental health charity, the 401 Foundation. Over the weekend, David Field (Club Chairman) and Shaun Tymon (Chairman of the 401 Foundation) ran in the 3 separate races of 5 and 10 kilometre and Half Marathon, plus a special extra race for people who had run all distances - making the weekend mileage up to full marathon distance.     Triathlon Races at Hetton Lyons Country Park

    3 of Scarborough Athletic Club’s junior triathletes competed in top class events in their age group, and national and regional series of triathlon events.

    In the Youth and Juniors British Triathlon Superseries, Harry Butterworth represented Yorkshire in the Youth ‘A’ category race. The format of the race comprised of a qualifying heat for the final, set over a 300m lake swim, a 10m cycle and 2km run with the first 12 finishers qualifying for the final. In the qualifying heat, Harry exited the swim and through the first swim/bike transition in the lead group and after a strong bike leg, lead the race out of the bike/run transition going into the run. The two-circuit run saw the leading group set a strong pace, with Butterworth easing off the pace at the end in a comfortable qualifying position. In the hotly contested final, Harry finished 14

    Matilda and Ozzy Stringer competed in National Tristar 2 and 3 races. Matilda was 17th and 3

    rd Yorkshire in Tristar

    2 and Ozzy was 14th and 3

    rd Yorkshire in Tristar 3. They both gained enough points to gain immediate selection to

    represent Yorkshire in a National Regional competition in September. They also both remain 2nd

    in their age groups in the Yorkshire series with just one more event left.

    Triathlon Races at Castle Howard 3 senior club members competed in triathlon events staged in and around the grounds of Castle Howard. Heather Westron competed in the Gauntlet event, which was the most demanding at the venue, and consisted of a1,900 metre swim, 90 kilometre cycle and 21 kilometre final run. She completed the race 21

    st female overall in 9

    hours 30 minutes. In the Super-Sprint race which consisted of 400 metre swim. 23-kilometre cycle and 4-kilomete run, Hester Butterworth finished up in 50

    th overall and 4

    th Over-40 in 1 hour 35 minutes.

    Nikki Carr competed in her first ever triathlon event, which was the Standard Olympic distance event with a 1500 metre swim, 45-kilometre cycle and 10-kilometre run, and just a week after competing in a 40- mile trail race and for the club in track races the following day, she completed her debut triathlon in a notable 4 hours 19 minutes

  • Summer Handicap Race 5 65 Club members competed in the 5

    th round of the Club Summer Handicap series of races, which consisted of a

    testing 4.2-mile multi terrain course at Cloughton. The first finisher on handicap was Shannon Fletcher who was followed by Karen Settle and Sally Kingscott. The fastest finisher was James Kraft and Katy Rawnsley was the fastest female Parkruns 9. Sewerby 15. club members took part in the latest Sewerby Parkrun. Duncan Smart was first for the club after finishing 27

    th overall of 257.
