Welcome

Welcome to the VSU Athletic Department’s Visitor’s Guide. We hope you will find the information

useful as you prepare to travel to our campus for an athletic contest this season. This guide can

be used to find local amenities such as lodging, transportation, restaurants and directions to our

various facilities. You will find important information about our campus and our department of

which you should take advantage of while planning your trip.

Parking is limited to certain areas on campus. Spectators should follow the signs to Parking Lots

27 and 28 for all contest at Rogers Stadium and Daniel Gymnasium. Make sure you only park

in the designated areas. Spectators may not park in a handicap spot unless the vehicle is marked

as that of a handicapped driver. At no time should a vehicle be parked in a fire lane. Vehicles

parked in fire lanes or other NO PARKING ZONES will be ticketed and/or towed at the owner’s

expense.

Best wishes to you on your trip to the campus of Virginia State University. If there is anything

About Vsu

Virginia State University was founded in 1882 as the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute, making it the first full state supported four year institution of higher learning for Blacks in America. Today, Virginia State University is one of Virginia’s two land grant institution.

The campus sits atop a rolling landscape overlooking the Appomattox River in Chesterfield County village of Ettrick. It is accessible by Interstates 95 and 85, which intersect in adjacent to Petersburg, as well as U.S. Routes 1, 301, and 260.

Virginia State University students live and learn on a 236‐acre main campus and a 416-acre agricultural research facility. The main campus includes more than 50 buildings, including 16 dormitories, 17 classroom buildings, and offers 16 team sports.

The University’s academic programs include the “Bridges to Baccalaureate” a program for students transferring from two year colleges who want to major in the sciences. The Honda Campus All-Star Challenge and the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program for students planning to pursue doctoral degrees is also in their chosen field of study. Honors scholarships are also available to entering freshmen, including the Presidential and Provost Scholarships. Athletic training information

Dear Visiting Athletic Trainer,

On behalf of Virginia State University we would like to welcome you and your team to the campus of VSU, home of the Trojans. If you have any special needs or request, do not hesitate to contact Matt Williams, ATC, Head Athletic Trainer.

The Athletic Training Rooms are located in Rogers Stadium (Football Stadium), Daniel Gymnasium and Multipurpose Center. Hours are Monday thru Friday 8:00 am‐11:30 am and 1:00 pm‐5:00 pm. The Athletic Training Room will be open 2 hours before the contest, during the contest, and approximately one hour after each contest.

Below you will find a list of items we will supply for all home athletic contests.

Hydrocollator Ultrasound and Electrical Stimulation Modalities

** If traveling without an ATC, written documentation must be provided to utilize these modalities. Injury Ice and Ice bags Coolers of Ice Water

Visiting teams must furnish their own towels, taping materials, and first aid supplies.

We ask that teams traveling without a certified athletic trainer notify us in advance so we can be prepared to accommodate your student athletes.

Due to safety concerns and risk management, we are requesting that your cheering squad not perform acrobatic

stunts at Virginia State University (to include lifts, flipping skills into or from stunts, pyramid, etc.), because of the

safety issues and insurance concerns they are prohibited at VSU. Also NCAA requires that cheerleading squads

conform to the American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors (AACCA) Cheerleading Safety

Guidelines. Should you have any questions and/or concerns regarding this administrative decision, please feel free

to contact me by phone or e‐mail.

directions & ParkingVirginia State University is located in the Chesterfield County village of Ettrick which is across the Appomattox River from the city of Petersburg. Virginia State University is approximately 125 miles south of Washington, DC and 25 miles south of Richmond, VA via I‐95. It is approximately 30 miles from Richmond International Airport. The campus is easily accessible by car, bus, train, or air. The Ettrick/Petersburg Amtrak station is less than one mile from campus.

Arriving by I-95 South from Richmond, Washington, DC. etc.Follow 1-95 South to Petersburg. Take exit (Temple Avenue). Turn left at Temple Avenue and continue to second traffic light (Boulevard). Turn left at Boulevard and continue to fourth traffic light (Dupuy Road). Turn right at Dupuy Road which changes to River Road. The campus will be on your left. Enter at Matthew-Jefferson Drive. Proceed around Matthew-Jefferson Drive onto University Avenue. Turn right onto Hayden Street. Virginia Hall is located to your left opposite of Jones Dining Hall.

Arriving by I-64 from Norfolk (East) or Charlottesville (West)Take exit for I-95, follow I-95 South to Petersburg. Take exit (Temple Avenue). Media informationAll media must follow NCAA and department rules and regulations.

Press Credentials Press credentials are issued to working media only. All requests for credentials should be made to the Sports Information Director, at least 24 hours in advance of game day. Credentials may be picked up at the Athletic Office on the Virginia State University Campus prior to game day. Credentials may also be picked up on game day at Will Call.

Press Box/table Due to limited seating, only working media with proper credentials will be admitted to the press box/table during games. The press box/table is equipped with electrical outlets and wireless internet.

Press Parking Press parking is available behind Rogers Stadium along Fourth Avenue. Parking spots will be designated for press parking. Press parking for the games in Daniel Gymnasium and Multipurpose Center are located at the respective event venue.

radio/television Broadcasts All requests for radio or television broadcasts of games must be arranged through the Sports Information Office at least one week in advance of game day. When more than one request is received for the same game, top priority will be given to television, then to the radio station that regularly broadcasts the visiting team’s games.

statistical information Working media will be supplied press guides, line-up sheets and cumulative statistics, which will be distributed on press row prior to game time. Halftime or “quickie” statistics will be available at halftime. Final statistics will be distributed as quickly as possible after the conclusion of the game.

Player and Coach interviews Players and coaches will be available for interviews during the week by phone or in person. Please make all interview requests through the VSU Sports Information Office. Interview times for players are dependent upon the players’ academic schedules. At the conclusion of each game, players and coaches are available for interviews after a 10-minute “cooling off ” period. Post-game interviews will be conducted on the field or outside the locker rooms.

Photo Credentials NCAA policy establishes that photographers on assignment, both print and television, will be afforded credentials. Photographers are not allowed in the team areas for any reason.

Facilitiesrogers stadium (Football & track)

Rogers Stadium (7,909) is home to the Virginia State’s football team and men’s and women’s track & field teams. The athletic field was named after William A. Rogers, the first faculty member that became a coach at VSU. Rogers Stadium was opened for football and track in 1950. The current track configuration was installed in 2002 and saw a major refurbishing over the winter of 2009.

daniel Gym (Basketball & Volleyball)

Daniel Gymnasium (3,200) is home to the Virginia State’s men’s and women’s basketball teams and the Trojan volleyball team. The gym was named after Charles J. Daniel, the Secretary of the College back in 1916. The first men’s basketball team at VSU was formed in 1921.Women’s Basketball and Volleyball began in 1977 at VSU.

Multipurpose Center (CoMiNG sooN)

The Multipurpose Center consists of a 165,941 square foot sports and event arena that seats 6,100 for stage events and 5,100 for sporting events. The arena is the size of three football fields and sits on a piece of property the size of six football fields. The Multipurpose Center accommodates mens and womens athletic events, commencements, convocations, academic events, concerts, banquets and meetings.

Whaley Colbert Field (Baseball)

Whaley Colbert Field opened in 1997 and was named after Whaley M. Colbert, a Chesterfield County Supervisor and one of the founders of the Ettrick (Va.) Youth Sports Association. VSU has won more CIAA baseball titles (23) than any other school in the CIAA, and won recent championships in 2004, 2007, 2008, and 2009. When the newly-formed CIAA conference opened in 1924, the Trojans won the first ever CIAA baseball championship.

FacilitiesVsu softball Field

The VSU Softball Field opened in 2003. Prior to the building of the on-campus facility, the Trojans played their home games at Ettrick Park in Ettrick, Va. In 2004, VSU won it’s only CIAA Championship which advanced them to the NCAA Tournament.

Vsu tennis Complex

VSU Tennis Complex (9 Courts) is home to the men's and women's tennis teams. The VSU Tennis Complex opened in 2005 and consists of nine courts. The complex has been the site of the CIAA Tennis Championship from 2005-2014. The women's tennis team won the CIAA Championship for the first time in school history in 2008.
