The Crusaders are currently tied with Colgate for sixth place in the Patriot League. Holy Cross can still finish as high as third or as low as ninth in the final conference standings. Senior forward Malachi Alexander leads the team by averaging 13.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game. THE SERIES WITH AMERICAN: This will be the 39th meeting between the Crusaders and the Eagles on the hardwood, with the all-time series tied at 19-19. The Eagles have won 14 of the last 18 contests played by the schools, but the Crusaders came out on top 63-55 earlier this season in Worcester. For games played in Washington, the Eagles hold a 13-7 advantage with 11 straight wins. Holy Cross and American first played on Dec. 21, 1967, with the Crusaders winning 81-57 on the road.

HOLY CROSS STEPS UP ON DEFENSE: The Crusaders have been one of the top defensive teams in the Patriot League during the 2016-2017 sea-son. In 28 games played, Holy Cross has limited its opponents to just 62.6 points per game. The Crusaders have been even more impressive during Patriot League play, holding conference foes to just 61.1 points per contest. Overall this year, Holy Cross has forced 16.2 turnovers per game, while averaging 9.5 steals per contest. The Crusaders have held 13 of their 28 opponents to under 60 points, with lows of 45 points by Lehigh, 49 points by Albany, 50 points by Navy and 50 points by Colgate.

THE 1,000-POINT CLUB: Senior guard Robert Champion enters the American game needing 12 points to become the 51st 1,000-point scorer in the history of Holy Cross men’s basketball. Champion has scored 988 points in 117 career games as a Crusader, good for an average of 8.4 points per contest. Earlier this season, senior forward Malachi Alexander became the 50th 1,000-point scorer in program history on Dec. 18 at Rhode Island. He scored his 1,000th career point by knocking down the front end of a one-and-one with 5:19 remaining in the first half. Alexander has now scored 1,258 points in 127 career games (9.9 points per contest).

CHAMPION ENJOYING ANOTHER STRONG SEASON: Senior guard Robert Champion is once again a key player in the Holy Cross backcourt this year. Through 28 games played, he has averaged 12.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals per contest. During the Army game, Champion led the team with 21 points and two steals. Previously against Lehigh, he fiished with 13 points, six rebounds and two assists. Champion also played well at Lafayette, scoring 20 points while hitting six of 12 three-point field goal attempts. A few of his other top games this season have come against Quinnipiac (career-high 28 points, five steals), against Marist (23 points, five rebounds, three steals), at Albany (22 points, three steals), at Bucknell (19 points, four rebounds), at Boston University (18 points, five rebounds, three steals), at South Carolina (18 points, four rebounds), against South Carolina State (18 points, three rebounds, three assists), against Colgate (17 points, six rebounds, four assists), at Loyola (17 points, three rebounds), at Maine (13 points, eight rebounds, two steals), at Colgate (12 points, five rebounds), against Navy (11 points, four rebounds) and against American (10 points, four steals, three rebounds). Last season, Champion averaged a team-best 12.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest. Over the course of his Holy Cross career, Champion has now totaled 988 points, 335 rebounds, 108 assists and 104 steals.

CARMODY LEADS THE CRUSADERS: Bill Carmody is in his second season as the head men’s basketball coach at Holy Cross in 2016-2017, with an overall record of 28-35. He owns a career record of 312-280, after earning his 300th career victory with a 63-52 win at Harvard on Nov. 22, 2016. Last season, Carmody led the Crusaders to their first Patriot League Tournament title since 2007 and their first NCAA Tournament victory since 1953. The 17th head coach in the history of the program, he has 33 years of Division I coaching experience, including 18 seasons as a head coach (with 13 years at Northwestern and four seasons at Princeton). Carmody has led his teams to nine postseason tournament appearances — three trips to the NCAA Tournament and six trips to the National Invitation Tournament.

ARMY RECAP

Robert Champion scored a game-high 21 points, but the Crusaders were defeated by Army 52-47 at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex on Feb. 15, 2017. The Crusaders hit just 32.6 percent of their field goal attempts on the night, while the Black Knights were able to connect on 38.3 percent of their shots from the floor. Holy Cross did force 22 turnovers, but was outrebounded 41-23. Malachi Alexander finished the game with eight points and five rebounds, while Patrick Benzan added seven points, two rebounds and two steals. Army was led by Jacob Kessler with 17 points and nine rebounds. The Crusaders opened the game with an early 6-3 lead, before the Black Knights went on an 11-2 run to pull in front by six (14-8). Army was later up 22-18, when Holy Cross scored five straight points to reclaim the lead. The Black Knights then closed out the half with a 10-2 spurt to take a 32-25 advantage into the locker room. Champion scored the first eight points of the second half, giving the Crusaders a 33-32 lead with 16:56 left to play. But Holy Cross then went cold from the floor, and was outscored 14-6 over the next 14 minutes as Army built a 46-39 lead. After trailing 49-41 with 1:35 remaining, the Crusaders used a quick 6-0 run to close the gap to two points (49-47) with 33.8 seconds to go. But the Black Knights were able to hit thre of four free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory.

ALEXANDER PLAYS PROMINENT ROLE: Senior forward Malachi Alexander is once again one of the top players for the Crusaders this year. Through 28 games played, Alexander has averaged 13.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 1.9 assists per contest, while hitting 39.1 percent of his three-point attempts. In the victory over Lehigh, he posted 11 points, five steals, three rebounds and three assists. Previously at Bucknell, Alexander recorded 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. He also played well at Navy, totaling 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Some of Alexander’s other top performances this year have come at Sacred Heart (career-high 38 points, 10 rebounds), at Loyola (20 points, three rebounds, three steals), against Lafayette (19 points, six rebounds), at Colgate (18 points, eight rebounds), at Army (18 points, six rebounds, four assists), against Navy (17 points, seven rebounds), at Albany (17 points, seven rebounds, three assists), at Maine (16 points, six rebounds, three steals), against American (15 points, seven rebounds, five steals, three assists), at South Carolina (15 points, six rebounds), at Lehigh (15 points, four rebounds), at Rhode Island (15 points), against Massachusetts (14 points, three assists), against Monmouth (13 points, five rebounds, five assists), against Marist (12 points, four rebounds, four assists, four steals), against South Carolina State (11 points, six rebounds) and at New Hampshire (10 points, seven rebounds). Last season, he averaged 11.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists per contest, while hitting 47.1 percent of his field goal attempts and 43.9 percent of his three-pointers. Alexander was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2016 Patriot League Tournament, after averaging 20.8 points and 7.5 rebounds in four games. Over the course of his collegiate career, Alexander has now totaled 1,258 points, 633 rebounds, 213 assists and 123 steals.

STEALING THE SHOW: In 28 games played so far this season, Holy Cross has averaged a Patriot League-best 9.5 steals per contest. The Crusaders have reached double figures in steals 15 times this year, with a high of 16 steals against both American and Quinnipiac. Prior to this season, Holy Cross had not recorded 16 steals in a single game since Nov. 12, 2006, when it had 16 steals against Fairfield. Senior forward Malachi Alexander currently leads the team with 52 steals, followed by senior guard Robert Champion (46 steals), sophomore forward Karl Charles (45 steals), senior guard Anthony Thompson (45 steals) and sophomore guard Patrick Benzan (42 steals). Holy Cross is the only team in the nation to currently have more than three players with at least 40 steals.

CHARLES BUILDS ON ALL-ROOKIE SEASON: Sophomore forward Karl Charles has been a key player for the Crusaders this season, after being named to the Patriot League All-Rookie and All-Tournament teams a year ago. Through 28 games played this year, he has averaged 9.8 points, 3.6 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals, while hitting 80.2 percent of his free throws. During the victory over Lehigh, Charles led the team with 15 points, five rebounds and two assists. Previously at Bucknell, he recorded 11 points, seven assists and two steals. Charles also played well at Army, scoring a career-high 24 points on eight of 10 shooting from the field. A few of his other top games this year have come against Lafayette (20 points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals), at New Hampshire (16 points, three rebounds, three assists), against South Carolina State (14 points, career-high nine assists, five boards), against Quinnipiac (14 points, eight assists, four rebounds, three steals), at Harvard (14 points, four rebounds), at Colgate (13 points, six assists, three rebounds), against Monmouth (12 points, eight assists, seven rebounds), against American (12 points, four rebounds, three assists), at Rhode Island (12 points, four rebounds, three steals) and against Bucknell (10 points, three rebounds). Last season, Charles averaged 10.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.5 blocks per game, while hitting 79.2 percent of his free throws. Over the course of his collegiate career, Charles has totaled 646 points, 239 rebounds, 186 assists and 82 steals.

PROTECTING THE BALL: In 28 games played so far this season, the Crusaders have only turned the ball over 311 times, for an average of 11.1 turnovers per contest. Holy Cross has posted single-digit turnovers nine times this year, including a season-low of five at Lafayette. Last year, the Crusaders committed only 386 turnovers in 35 games, for a Patriot League-low average of 11.0 turnovers per contest. In 2014-2015, Holy Cross averaged 10.9 turnovers per contest, with 328 total turnovers in 30 games. That mark was the lowest in the Patriot League and also set a school single-season record.

THE LAST MEETING

Malachi Alexander totaled 15 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists, to lead the Crusaders to a 63-55 victory over American at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex on Jan. 23, 2017. Karl Charles finished the game with 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Patrick Benzan added 11 points, six rebounds and two steals, while Robert Champion tallied 10 points, four steals and three rebounds. The Eagles were led by Delante Jones with 18 points and six boards. Both teams struggled to score early in the first half, and American held a 15-13 lead with 6:50 left before the break. Holy Cross then went on a12-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 25-17 advantage. The Crusaders went on to take a 38-23 lead into the locker room at halftime. Holy Cross was later up 34-31 with 15 minutes remaining, before scoring 10 straight points to take a commanding 43-31 lead. Both Alexander and Benzan scored four points during that spurt. The Eagles would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way, and the Crusaders hit 12 of 17 free throws in the final three minutes to pull out the victory. Holy Cross held a 29-25 rebounding advantage on the night, and totaled 16 steals while forcing American to commit 23 turnovers. The Crusaders made 42.9 percent of their field goal attempts, 20.0 percent of their three-pointers and 70.6 percent of their free throws on the night. The Eagles were able to connect on 50.0 percent of their shots from the floor, 31.6 percent from beyond the arc and 41.7 percent at the charity stripe.

THOMPSON RETURNS TO BACKCOURT: Senior guard Anthony Thompson is once again a key part of the Holy Cross backcourt this year. Through 28 games played, he has averaged 6.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.6 steals per contest. In the victory over Lehigh, Thompson recorded 10 points, a career-high nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. Previously at Navy, he posted 10 points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists. Thompson also played well at Colgate, totaling 12 points, four assists and two rebounds. A few of his other top games this year have come against Monmouth (18 points, four of five shooting from three-point range), against Massachusetts (14 points) and at Syracuse (12 points). Last season, Thompson averaged 7.1 points, 2.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals per contest, while hitting 79.5 percent of his free throws. Over the course of his Holy Cross career, Thompson has now totaled 837 points, 286 rebounds, 272 assists and 138 steals, while making 74.2 percent of his free throws (239 of 322).

HART IS WHERE THE HOME IS: Holy Cross currently owns an all-time record of 372-155 at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex, including an 8-3 mark so far this season. The Crusaders posted their 300th win in the building against Sacred Heart on Nov. 14, 2008. Holy Cross had a 23-game winning streak at the Hart Center from Feb. 15, 2006-Jan. 2, 2008, which was the longest streak in the history of the building and the sixth-longest home court winning streak in the nation at the time. In 2006-2007 the Crusaders posted a perfect 14-0 mark at the Hart Center, setting a school record for the most home victories since they moved into the building. During the Hart Center’s history, Holy Cross has posted a winning record at home in 35 out of 41 seasons, while recording double-figure home victories 18 times. The Crusaders stand 159-63 at home since the beginning of the 2000-2001 season, including a 103-36 record against Patriot League foes.

BENZAN PLAYS KEY MINUTES IN BACKCOURT: Sophomore guard Patrick Benzan has been one of the top players in the Holy Cross backcourt so far this season. In 28 games played, Benzan has averaged 7.8 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals per game, while hitting 51.9 percent of his field goal attempts. In the game at Bucknell, he recorded 15 points, three rebounds and two steals. Previously at Navy, Benzan led the team with 12 points and two steals. He also played well at Loyola, totaling 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. A few of Benzan’s other top games this season have come at Army (career-high 16 points, eight assists, five rebounds, three steals), at Harvard (15 points, three assists), against Bucknell (15 points), against UMass (12 points, career-best 10 rebounds, four steals), against Navy (12 points, three rebounds, three assists, game-winning shot with 0.1 seconds remaining), against American (11 points, six rebounds) and against Lafayette (11 points, four rebounds). Over the course of his collegiate career, Benzan has now totaled 242 points, 96 rebounds, 78 assists and 47 steals.

HUSEK STEPS UP IN THE POST: Senior center Matt Husek has been one of Holy Cross’ top players down low this season. In 28 games played, he has averaged 6.1 points and 2.2 rebounds, while hitting 45.4 percent of his field goal attempts. In the home victory over Colgate, Husek recorded 11 points, three rebounds and two assists. Previously at Boston University, he totaled 14 points, four rebounds and two assists. Husek also played well against Marist, finishing with 12 points and two blocked shots. A few of his other top games this year have come against Monmouth (12 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals), against South Carolina State (12 points, five rebounds) and against Quinnipiac (10 points, four assists). Last season, Husek averaged 5.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per contest. Over the course of his collegiate career, he has now totaled 434 points, 190 rebounds and 63 blocked shots.

CRUSADERS IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Four Holy Cross players have earned spots in the school’s all-time record book this season. Senior forward Malachi Alexander holds the all-time record for career games played (127), while standing fifth in career minutes played (3,595) and ninth in career three-point field goal percentage (.399, 129 of 323). Senior guard Anthony Thompson ranks fourth all-time in career three-point field goal attempts (437), seventh in career average minutes played (29.7), ninth in career three-pointers made (136), ninth in career minutes played (3,412), ninth in career games started (91) and 10th in career steals (138). In addition, senior guard Robert Champion stands fifth all-time in career three-point field goal attempts (433) and sixth in career three-pointers made (145), while sophomore forward Karl Charles ranks eighth in career free throw percentage (.796, 215 of 270) and ninth in career average minutes played (29.6).

TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE: This year marks the 97th season of Holy Cross men’s basketball. The Crusaders own an overall record of 1,388-967, while making 26 postseason tournament appearances — 13 trips to the NCAA Tournament, 12 to the National Invitation Tournament and one to the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. In the history of collegiate basketball, Holy Cross is one of only 16 schools to have won the NCAA Tournament (1946-1947) as well as the National Invitational Tournament (1953-1954). Throughout its history, Holy Cross has had six first team All-America se-lections, sent 10 players to the National Basketball Association, had four players and coaches inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, had 23 players drafted by professional teams, had three players go on to coach professionally and had 15 players who have coached in college.

CRUSADERS PICKED FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL: In the 2016-2017 Patriot League preseason poll, Holy Cross was picked to finish in fourth place in voting by the conference’s head coaches and sports infor-mation directors. The Crusaders received 115 total points in the conference preseason poll. Lehigh placed first in the poll, with 161 total points and 17 first-place votes, followed by Boston University in second with 139 points and three first-place votes, and Bucknell in third with 132 points. American placed fifth with 86 points, while Colgate was sixth (83 points) and Loyola (Md.) was seventh (69 points). The preseason rankings were rounded out by Navy (eight, 49 points), Lafayette (ninth, 43 points) and Army West Point (10th, 23 points).

ALEXANDER TIES THREE-POINT RECORD AT SACRED HEART: During the Dec. 21 game at Sacred Heart, senior forward Malachi Alexander tied the all-time Holy Cross single-game record for three-point field goals made. Alexander drained seven of eight attempts from behind the arc against the Pioneers, becoming the sixth player in school history to hit seven three-pointers in a game. The feat was previously accomplished by Rob Feaster (at New Hampshire, Nov. 25, 1994), Kevin Hamilton (vs. Chattanooga, Dec. 19, 2005), Devin Brown (vs. Navy, Feb. 16, 2011), Cullen Hamilton (vs. Sacred Heart, Nov. 13, 2013) and senior guard Robert Champion (at Lehigh, Feb. 15, 2016).

DRIBBLES: Senior forward Malachi Alexander broke the all-time Holy Cross career record for games played against Army on Feb. 15. He has now played in 127 career games, surpassing Keith Simmons (126 games, 2003-2007) ... Holy Cross won 85-76 at Army on Jan. 18, after trailing by 17 points in the second half (56-39). That marked the biggest comeback by the Crusaders since they rallied from 17 down to defeat Army on Feb. 11, 2009 ... Freshman guard Clayton Le Sann scored a career-high 13 points at Army on Jan. 18, hitting five of six field goal attempts and three of four shots from three-point range ... Senior forward Malachi Alexander scored 38 points at Sacred Heart on Dec. 21, the most by a Crusader in a single-game since Kevin Hamilton had 38 points against Tennessee-Chat-tanooga on Dec. 19, 2005 ... Sophomore forward Jehyve Floyd scored a season-high eight points at Rhode Island, and grabbed a career-best seven rebounds at Sacred Heart. He is now averaging 2.1 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.7 blocks per game this season, while hitting 53.3 percent of his field goal attempts ... Prior to the Dec. 11 game against Quinnipiac, the Crusaders unveiled their 2016 NCAA Tournament banner ... The crowd of 21,405 for the Holy Cross-Syracuse game on Nov. 15 was the second-largest to ever see the Crusaders play, and the most ever in the regular season. The record of 26,612 was set on March 14, 2002, against Kansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the at Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Mo. ... In the latest NCAA Graduation Success Rate Report, for the four-class aggregate of entering classes from 2006 through 2009, the Crusader men’s basketball team posted a perfect 100 percent graduation rate. Holy Cross’ overall Graduation Success Rate for all student-athletes was 97 percent, tied for the 17th-best mark among all Division I schools ...
