COVID-19 AND ATHLETIC WORKOUTS

SCCPSS GUIDELINES FOR ATHLETIC TEAM SUMMER WORKOUTS AND CONDITIONS
SCCPSS will adhere to the following guidelines for the return to conditioning for our athletic teams.
Cleaning supplies will be made available to assist with these guidelines.
SCCPSS GUIDELINES FOR ATHLETIC TEAM SUMMER WORKOUTS AND CONDITIONS
• ALL SUMMER WORK IS VOLUNTARY.
• Only Fall Sports are allowed at this time.
• No visitors are allowed at conditioning sessions.
• The number of people allowed in a specific workout area is dependent on the size
of the workout area. Each school may have different requirements based on their
facility. The maximum allowed is 20. (This number includes staff and students).
SCCPSS GUIDELINES FOR ATHLETIC TEAM SUMMER WORKOUTS AND CONDITIONS
• Only one group per sport at any given time on campus.
• Groups will be the same individuals (including coaches) for each session to limit the
risk of exposure. Students or coaches CANNOT change groups for the duration of
this guidance.
• Within our workout groups (20-person maximum to include staff), the students will be
placed in smaller groups of no more than 4 to be workout partners. These smaller
groups must stay the same and CANNOT change throughout the duration of this
guidance phase.
• Vulnerable individuals should not oversee or participate in any workouts at this time.
SCCPSS GUIDELINES FOR ATHLETIC TEAM SUMMER WORKOUTS AND CONDITIONS
• Each school will develop a plan that includes; workout schedules, staff assigned for
screening, staff assigned for cleaning and disinfecting, staff assigned for dismissal of
athletes, equipment disinfecting schedule with log sheet, facility cleaning and
disinfecting schedule with log sheet (See Athletic Reopening Matrix).
• Staff member must complete monitoring form for everyone who enters facility
• Test for fever before entering the facility.
• Monitoring form will be kept on file, scanned and emailed to Head Coach and
Athletic Director.

• If an athlete has symptoms, the athlete will be removed from the activity and must present
proof of a negative COVID-19 test before return.
• If an athlete tests positive for COVID-19, all persons in that athlete’s workout group
must quarantine for 14 days, then be tested and may return only with a negative COVID-19
test result.
• Everyone must wear protective masks while in common areas, in weight room and while
entering and exiting facilities.
• Designate workout areas for each activity. Students will report to that area and will
not gather in non-designated areas.
• Students will leave campus immediately following the end of their workout.

• Each group may workout/condition no more than three times per week.
• Workout/conditioning sessions will be no longer than 90 minutes each.
• There will be a 30-minute break between workout sessions for cleaning and
disinfecting ofequipment.
• Workouts are conditioning only, no balls or sport specific equipment.
• No water will be provided during workouts; students must bring a minimum of 1
gallon of water. No water, No workout.

• Maintain social distancing as much as possible.
• Side spots only in weight training, safety bars are preferred.
• There is no competition allowed between schools.
• Students are not allowed to share clothing or any other items.
• Weight equipment will be cleaned prior to each workout session and sanitized
between use by each student. (Surfaces should be wiped down)
• Any equipment with holes having exposed foam should be covered. (Duct Tape)

• Signage posted with signs and symptoms of COVID-19 at entrance of facility.
• Signage posted with measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at entrance of
facility.
• Hand sanitizer will be plentiful and readily available.
• Encourage frequent hand washing.
• Post signs in bathrooms reminding students, staff and faculty to wash their hands.

• Limit the number of person’s allowed in a restroom at a time (Depends on size of
restroom)
• Promote usage and locations of hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes and/or sprays.
• Ensure all soap dispensers in restrooms are filled with antibacterial soap.
• Each site will designate which restroom will be available.
• No use of lockers or shower facilities. Students should report to the facility
dressed for the activity and plan to shower at home.

STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENTER OR PARTICIPATE IN WORKOUTS
WITHOUT THE FOLLOWING:

PROCEDURES FOR USE OF ATHLETIC FACILITIESPROCEDURES FOR ENTRY
1. Face coverings must always be worn in the building.
2. All students must bring their own water (1-gallon jug us recommended)
3. All Students must enter at a designated location.
4. Students will remain 6 feet apart while waiting to be screened.
5. One student at a time will enter to be screened.
6. After entry, students will report directly to their designated workout location.

• Question 1 – Do you have a cough?
• Question 2 – Do you have a sore throat?
• Question 3 – Do you have shortness of breath?
• Question 4 – Have you recently had a loss of taste or smell?
• Question 5 – Have you been in close contact or cared for someone with COVID-19?
PROCEDURES FOR USE OF ATHLETIC FACILITIESPROCEDURES FOR ENTRY
If anyone exhibits symptoms they will not be admitted and cannot return until they
present proof of a negative COVID-19 Test. If anyone has been exposed to someone
with COVID-19, they will not be admitted and cannot return until:
a) presentation of proof of a negative COVID-19 test
b) completion of 14-day quarantine
c) symptom free

• Entry table will be disinfected following each entry session.
• Hand sanitizer will be available at entry.

• Equipment will be wiped following a set by each athlete.
• Hand sanitizer should be used often.
• If groups rotate stations, the station must be disinfected before the rotation.

1. Students must remain with their workout group until dismissed by the coach.
2. Face coverings must always be worn in the facility.
3. Maintain social distancing.
4. No lingering in facility, must leave immediately following activity.
5. No lingering on campus, must leave campus immediately following activity.
PROCEDURES FOR USE OF ATHLETIC FACILITIESCLEANING PROCEDURES
• All equipment will be cleaned after use by each athlete.
• Workout areas will be disinfected between workout groups (Disinfectant Spray).
• Staff and students will disinfect area prior to exiting.
• Disinfectant should be administered to equipment and allowed to sit without
wiping for approximately 5 minutes.
• A 30-minute time period will be used between workout sessions.

District ● Develop guidelines for the return to conditioning per CDC and GHSA
guidelines.
● Complete site assessment for adherence to CDC Guidelines.
● Provide training for temperature, monitoring form and sanitizing.
● Provide guidelines and supporting material to schools.
● Assist stakeholders in adhering to the guidelines.
● Provide support as needed.
● Secure Athletic Trainers for all sites.
● Develop and distribute communication for school and community
stakeholders.
● Periodic site visits to ensure guidelines are being followed.

Principal ● Ensure resources are available to ensure all district guidelines are
being met.
● Ensure all district guidelines and protocols are being followed and
documented.
● Review workout schedules and staffing plan with AD and Head Coach.
● Periodic monitoring to ensure guidelines are being followed.

Athletic
Director
● Meet with District Athletics to discuss guidelines.
● Meet with Coaches and Staff to ensure guidelines are understood.
● Assign staff member to screen staff and students.
● Work with Head Coaches to develop a workout/conditioning schedule for fall sports with
staggered workout times for multiple sports.
● Communicate and supply schedules to District Athletics prior to start of all activities.
● Post COVID-19 Information Signage.
● Work with the Athletic Trainer on scheduling and to ensure monitoring form is being
completed properly.
● Establish roles and responsibilities of staff.
● File screening forms for all staff and students for documentation.
● Periodic monitoring to ensure guidelines are being followed.
PROCEDURES FOR USE OF ATHLETIC FACILITIESROLES AND EXPECTATIONS
Head Coach ● Develop workout/conditioning schedule for team and submit to AD.
● Work with Athletic Director and other head coaches to ensure workout times
are staggered.
● Develop a workout plan with the following restrictions;
○ Three workouts per week
○ Maximum of 90 minutes per workout session
○ 30 minutes between sessions
● Ensure students wear facial coverings, wipe equipment following use, and
maintain social distancing as much as possible.
● Wear protective face coverings
● Maintain social distancing as much as possible.
● Ensure site is disinfected between sessions.
● Ensure all other guidelines are being followed. See attached document.

Assistant Coaches ● Ensure staff and students are following all guidelines.
● Assist AD and Head Coach with screening and supervision of students.
Athletic Trainer ● Assist coaching staff with screening and monitoring of staff and students.
● Observe and offer guidance to staff as it concerns social distancing and COVID-
19 safety precautions.
● Treat injured athletes.

SRO ● Monitor site to ensure no visitors or spectators are at workouts.
● Assist staff with students leaving campus following workouts.
● Assist as needed with other possible security issues.

Maintenance/
Custodians
Supervisor and custodians work as needed to complete the cleaning and
disinfecting process.
● Secure appropriate supplies for cleaning and disinfecting.
● All custodial staff / Plant Managers will work to clean and disinfect all workout
areas.
● Workout areas must be cleaned and disinfected daily, either following the last
session of the day or prior to the first session of the day.
● All other areas that are open to staff and students should be cleaned following
the same schedule as the workout areas.

Student/Athletes ● Enter the facility through designated entrance.
● Wear protective face coverings.
● Maintain social distancing as much as possible.
● Bring water in a container that is personalized.
● Appropriate clothing should always be worn in the weight room.
● No use of locker rooms or shower facilities.
● Clean/disinfect equipment after each use.
● No balls or sport specific equipment.
● Side spots only for weight training.
● Wash hands and use hand sanitizer often.
● Must adhere to specific time restraints.
● Must adhere to specific protocols and guidelines.
● Must leave campus immediately following activity.
OTHER POINTS OF EMPHASIS
• WORKOUT SCHEDULES MUST BE ALIGNED WITH THE SCHEDULE OF THE SCHOOL
CUSTODIAN. (CUSTODIAN MUST BE PRESENT AND PART OF THE GROUP OF 20)
• CUSTODIAN WILL ASSIST STAFF AND STUDENTS WITH CLEANING AND DISINFECTING OF
EQUIPMENT AND WORKOUT SPACE.
• ATHLETIC TRAINER MUST BE PRESENT. ATC WILL BE HIRED THROUGH ESS. ESS.COM AND
ENTER LOCATION AS SAVANNAH CHATHAM COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS. FOLLOW PROMPTS.
• PHYSICALS MUST BE VERIFIED AND UP TO DATE (RETURNING PLAYERS SHOULD BE ON FILE).
• INCOMING FRESHMAN MUST PRESENT COPY OF PHYSICAL OR WAIT UNTIL THEY CAN BE
VERIFIED.

Pre-Participation
Sports Evaluation
• Each School will be assigned a day
• All Student-Athletes must register with their Head Coach
• 80 slots per school (10 students every 30min)
• Cost is $25
• Must have a signed (by Parent or Guardian) Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation Form
• Must have a Coach present
SCCPSS has partnered with St. Joseph’s/Candler Health System to provide Pre-ParticipationSports Evaluation for SCCPSS Student-Athletes.
Who: For students grade 9-12 participating in (HS) Fall Sports (Football, Volleyball, Softballand Cross Country)
Where: Candler Hospital (2nd Floor) – Will meet in the lobby and be escorted to the examinationarea
When: July 13-17 and July 20-24 from 1:00-5:00pm.
