ATHLETES GUIDE

WELCOME FROM TEAM IN2ADVENTURE

On behalf of team In2Adventure we would like to send out the biggest welcome to athletes, friends and families attending Race 6 of the TreX 2017/18 Series.

We are so excited to launch the biggest TreX Series to date on our ten year anniversary. This year’s series will include seven events across the nation with an all new event location in beautiful Port Stephens. Race 6 sees us returning to our roots where it all began ten years ago at Murrenbong Scout

Camp in the beautiful Moreton Bay Region.

Ten years ago we discovered this amazing sport of cross triathlon and started with a dream to develop the sport within Australia. After our first small event in this very location, the series and the popularity of the sport continued to develop and grow.

Five years ago we had a dream that we would love to invite the world to this spectacular land downunder and in 2016 that dream came true and we welcomed athletes from 28 countries across the world to this amazing country at the 2016 ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships to enjoy the sport that we love so passionately.

2017 sees the continuation of that dream and we are so very proud to have the privilege to host Australian National Championships, State Championships and World Champs Qualification races as part of the 2017/18 TreX series.

We look forward to hopefully helping you to take away some amazing memories and experiences of your time in Queensland that will stay with you for a lifetime.

It is a true privilege to welcome each and every one of you to our very special In2Adventure Family. We wish you all every success and no matter what your dreams or goals at this event we encourage you to aim high, strive with all your heart, but most of all have the most awesome time doing it.

Now let’s get this party started!

Best Wishes

Robyn & Simon & the In2Adventure Team

FIRST AID A dedicated First Aid tent will be located in a central area at Race HQ.

Dedicated first aiders are also strategically positions throughout the course.

SAFETY ON THE COURSE

On the course there are a number of things athletes can do to assist themselves and fellow competitors:

Slow down in steep areas. If you’re not confident with a section of the track dismount your bike and

walk if you feel more comfortable. Please just remember to keep to the left so other riders can pass easily.

Ride/run on the left hand side of tracks. Compete within your limits. Let common sense and courtesy prevail. We want to see you safe and

sound at the end of the race.

Your Safety is Our Concern and Your Responsibility

3 SAFETY RULES 1. Stop and assist any competitor that is in need of emergency assistance. 2. Report any incident to the next available marshal or emergency radio point on the course. 3. Compete within your abilities.

EMERGENCY ASSEMBLY POINT In the event of an emergency, follow the instructions from event officials. On the course, marshals will direct you back to the evacuation meeting point at Race HQ. Please follow all directions given by event staff and/or emergency personnel.

LITTER ZONES We are extremely privileged to be granted permission to race in this naturally beautiful area and want to ensure that we keep the area in its original condition.

To make it easier for athletes litter zones have been implemented on the course where litter can be deposited. Each litter zone is clearly signed with a start and end point. Litter may be deposited between these signs only.

Marshals and video cameras on the course will be monitoring this closely and penalties and/or disqualification will result, so do the right thing and don’t spoil your race.

SET UP Place bikes where indicated by the transition race signage and set up race equipment next to your bike. Space is limited to 50cm per athlete so please consider other competitors and keep equipment neat and tidy.

Mountain Bikes are to be racked by the seat.

For safety, bags or boxes with equipment are not permitted in the Transition Area. Please don’t take them in as they will have to be removed by officials if left.

COURTESY IN THE TRANSITION AREA We’re all at the event to have a great day out! Each athlete has a 50cm allocated space to rack bikes & leave any kit that required during the event.

Please keep equipment neat and tidy and please don’t move or interfere with any other competitors gear or bike in the transition area.

GET TO KNOW THE TRANSITION AREA It’s important to know where to go in the transition area for the start and finish of each leg.

It’s preferable to find this out BEFORE the event rather than during the event. Take some time in the morning to check out:

The Bike Exit;

The Bike Entry and how to return to your allocated bike space;

The Run Exit; and

The Run Entry and where to enter the water for the second swim leg on Saturday’s Enduro.

TRANSITION CLOSURE 7:20AM The Transition Area will be cleared at this time. Participants must have placed their equipment and cleared the area by this time. If participants arrive at Transition after this time they will not be able to take part in the event.

This will be enforced as it is a Triathlon Australia safety and regulatory requirement that the Transition is free from competitors before the start of the event and all participants are required to attend the pre-race brief.

BIKE COLLECTION & TRANSITION AREA CLEARANCE The Transition Area will be open for bike collection when the final mountain bike has returned from the course. Please listen for announcements at Race HQ.

Dirt Kids will place their bikes in a temporary transition area near Race HQ just prior to the Dirt Kids Event Start. Dirt Kids will leave their bikes at a second transition area before running to Race HQ to finish.

Please listen out for the announcements at Race HQ for details. Transition rules are relaxed and we welcome parents and friends to encourage participants in a really positive and helpful way.

located throughout the course; however, it is the competitor’s responsibility to know the course and take the correct route on the day.

Examples of course signage are listed below.

SWIM COURSE

Te

2018 TreX Back 2 Back Enduro | Athletes Guide v2 P a g e | 21

ATHLETES GUIDE

MTB COURSE The mountain bike course is a 5km cross country lap and is graded easy to medium in technical difficulty. The majority of the course is suitable for beginners and will also challenge more experienced riders in the short technical sections,

The course includes fast, flowing single track, short sections of technical single track, switchbacks, trails, some fire trails and a creek crossing.

OVERTAKING Despite flowing single track on the course there are many opportunities for safe overtaking. Below are the standard overtaking procedures on the mountain bike course.

1. Keep to the left of the track where possible and allow others to pass.

Te

2018 TreX Back 2 Back Enduro | Athletes Guide v2 P a g e | 22

ATHLETES GUIDE

2. Walking something you do not feel confident riding is fine! However, please move off the track to allow riders right of way.

3. When passing, give the person in front a friendly shout to indicate that you wish to pass “Passing when you’re ready”

4. If being passed, as soon as safe to do so move to the edge of the trail. You may need to ride off the trail to allow the faster rider to pass

5. You must give track to a rider who wishes to pass, do not deliberately block from overtaking, this is against the rules and contrary to the spirit of the event.

6. If you aren’t confident or capable of riding off the track dismount off the track to allow other riders to pass.

7. Race hard! But keep it friendly & have a great time doing it!

MOUNTAIN BIKE FEED ZONE The Coaches Zone has been renamed the ‘Feed Zone’ for all events.

1. The MTB Feed Zone is not an Aid Station. The MTB Feed Zone is an area where athletes can access their own hydration/nutrition during the event.

2. Hydration/nutrition can be picked up directly by the athlete, or it may be handed to them by a designated assistant as the athlete passes through the feed zone ONLY.

3. Note: This is NOT a drop zone for unrequired items that an athlete took out of transition e.g. hydration packs, clothes, accessories, etc.

4. The Start and End of the feed zone will be clearly signed. Please place feed zone items between this signage only.

PLACEMENT & COLLECTION OF HYDRATION/NUTRITION 1. Hydration/Nutrition may be placed in Feed Zone prior to the event.

2. The athlete is responsible for collecting the items immediately after the event. All uncollected items will be delivered to the LOC Lost Property.

TRAIL RUN COURSE The run is a 4km lap and includes trails, single track, cross country, water crossings, creeks and mud which is one of the main reasons why we LOVE Off Road Triathlon!

Be aware this is a true OFF ROAD Course and the terrain will be uneven underfoot and your feet will get wet and muddy, so please consider this when choosing

footwear. A shoe that provides grip, stability and quick drainage will be best for the course.

It is a Triathlon Australia regulation that footwear must be worn on the run at all times. Competitors will finish at Race HQ where your friends & family will be there to cheer you on.

AID STATIONS There will be one aid stations on the 4km Trail Run Course which runners will pass at approx. 1.8k and 2.5k. The aid station will offer water in cups.

FINISH AREA The finish is always a special place for our athletes, so make sure you make your finish photo one to remember and get ready to celebrate your achievements.

Our volunteers will be serving fruit and water and collecting timing chips in the finish area.

BIKE COLLECTION Transition will be opened for competitors to collect their own bikes when the final mountain bike rider has returned to transition. Competitors are to wear their race numbers to verify bike collection.

PHOTOS One of our best loved In2Adventure volunteer photographers will be out on the course so make sure you keep that smile on your dial throughout the race!

Photos will be uploaded to the In2Adventure Facebook page a few days after the race and can be downloaded and shared free of charge.

VIDEOS Our favourite video team from Curyo Media will be onsite at the Back 2 Back Enduro to capture all the off road action. Basil and Dylan will be working hard on Saturday and Sunday night so keep an eye out for Day 1 Video Sunday Morning and Day 2 Video on Monday morning on social media and on In2Adventure TV.

Full results will also be published on the RESULTS page of the TreX Website.

MOST IMPORTANTLY Where you cross the finish line is important, but equally important is the experience you take away from the event. So please, race hard, but also remember to relax and enjoy the event for what it is… a great opportunity to get into the outdoors with your mates and have an awesome time!
