MINISTER OF SPORTS’ MESSAGE

A new year is always refreshing in every sense to human kind globally for its superstitious values that contains the magic to rejuvenate everybody without any barriers of cast, creed, or race and sex or age. The ability to implement the action plan as scheduled needs a lot of commitment and support from integral partners and hosting IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo as scheduled is a testimony of great integration.

For that in this message, I have to extend my heartiest gratitude to Pro-Am Serendib (Pvt) Ltd., the Official Licensee of the World Triathlon Corporation and owner of IRONMAN global triathlon brand, Shangri-La, Colombo the Official Host Hotel and Hayleys Tours the Official Travel Partner for collaborating with integral partners locally and internationally to make the only IRONMAN event in South Asia region of international magnitude a reality.

IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo is a gateway for Sri Lanka to enhance its position economically socially and politically as this event is expected to attract huge numbers of tri-athletes, their support crew, families and friends paving the way for the liaison officers and officials to

receive training and exposure within the country.

As the Minister of Sports, I am privileged to have the Ministry of Sports combine with the Tourism Promotion Bureau to envisage IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo to be utilized as a platform to support the national reconciliation and integration efforts of the government of Sri Lanka to persuade local athletes of every social stratum from the North to South Sri Lanka to form teams and participate at this event that requires endurance, determination and skill.

Hitherto, the Sri Lankan sports arena has been illuminated by Sri Lanka being the first to receive FIFA World Cup Trophy to commence its world tour, hosting the inaugural international Kart competition ‘X30 Asia Cup’ at Sri Lanka Karting Circuit in Bandaragama to mark the commencement of Karting competitions in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and other countries throughout the year are two other events to be proud of humbly as the Minister of Sports to accompany the IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo triathlon event.

These events signal that Ministry of Sports is in the proper path to encourage, promote and develop sports in Sri Lanka to propagate a healthy, joyful and sporty generation.

I wish everybody a happy and prosperous New Year 2018.

MINISTER OF TOURISM ANDCHRISTIAN AFFAIRS’ MESSAGE

IRONMAN is one of the world’s most iconic and high profile sporting events and the fact that Sri Lanka has been chosen to host the 70.3 version of this event and thereby being one of the countries to open the 2018 racing season is indeed a great honour for us.It no doubt offers an invaluable opportunity for Sri Lanka to showcase its diverse attractions, infrastructure and readiness for a wide array of sports while cementing its place as an emerging destination for high profile sports tourism.

I’m truly overwhelmed by the response to this event from across the world. At the time of writing, 850 athletes have confirmed participation while another 50 have been added to the waiting list. In addition another 1800 plus individuals consisting of friends and family members of participants have also confirmed participation which means a total of 2650 individuals from 63 countries will be arriving in Colombo exclusively for this event.

The international media spotlight that will be focused on Sri Lanka in general and the cosmopolitan city of Colombo in particular during this historic event will go a long way in promoting Sri Lanka as a top notch tourism destination.

The Ministry of Tourism Development is making every effort to develop tourism to its full potential and I believe the hosting of international sporting events such as this will go a long way in achieving our goal.I take this opportunity to invite all the participating athletes, their accompanying friends and family members to take time to travel around Sri Lanka and to experience first-hand the wonders of this beautiful land and the warmth of its people.

I also congratulate the organisers for making this dream a reality and commend their efforts in making this event the success it has become.

Finally, my best wishes go out to all the participants who will line up at Galle Face on Sunday 25th February morning!

EVENT DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Ayubowan, Vannakam.

We warmly welcome you to the 2018 Sri Lanka ‘Wonder of Asia’ IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo.

The host city, Colombo, is excited to receive you and deliver a memorable experience that you will cherish. This cosmopolitan, historic, picturesque and free-spirited city will surely ignite your excitement and wonderment.

Your race will start with a 1.9-km swim in the salty, sensual seawaters of the Indian Ocean near Galle Face green. The next you will transition to the 3-lap, flat, fast 90km bike leg that will take you through Colombo Port that stood as the trading hub for ancient sea trade routes. After you complete the scenic bike leg inside the port, you will head south towards Marine Drive that runs along the Indian Ocean. Along this out-and-back stretch, there will be a time trial competition over a 10km course. There will be an award for the male and female fastest time trial winners. Once you finish the 3

laps on the bike course, you will start the 2-lap 21.1km run leg. Once you finish your first lap you will collect your lap band and upon collecting the second lap band you will run along the finish line relishing the moment and marvelling in your achievement.

On Saturday 24th February, it is all about the kids when we host the IRONKIDS Sri Lanka, which is a run-only event occurring along Galle Face Walk. This edition will give all the kids an opportunity to be part of the race weekend and to encourage and inspire them to embrace an active and healthy lifestyle. Kids will have the opportunity to finish under the same finish chute as the adults with their own IRONKIDS brand.

My team and I worked hard to get where we are today and this was made possible by the support and encouragement of ours sponsors and supporters. We extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Ministry of Tourism and Christian Affairs, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, the Ministry of Sports, the Ministry of Ports, the Ministry of Defence, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Colombo Municipal Council, Shangri-La Hotel Colombo and all our esteemed sponsors and local stakeholders for their support to make this event a reality. I also want to recognise our phenomenal group of volunteers who are the livewire of this event and greatest ambassadors of the event as well as our country. My sincere gratitude to all of you. I kindly urge every athlete to acknowledge our volunteers who are there to look after you while you push your limits on the race course.

MESSAGE FROM RACE REFEREEWe are using the 2017 IRONMAN Race Competition Rules in alignment with the special IRONMAN Rules and this is a NON Drafting Event. To minimise the possibility of infringing the rules on race day and avoiding a visit to the Penalty Box, please observe the following:

• Ride on the left side of the bike lane • Keep 12m between yourself and the cyclist in front of you – front wheel to front wheel • Pass on the right of the cyclist in front (never on the left) • Complete your pass within 25s • If passed, drop back immediately 12m and ensure you have dropped back the full 12m before repassing • Conduct personal toilet stops at the on-course toilet facilities provided. • Remember to treat other athletes, volunteers and officials with courtesy and consideration as failure to do so is Unsportsmanlike Conduct.

Triathlon is an individual race and it is your responsibility to fully understand the rules and avoid infringements. A Technical Official’s ruling is final in the case of Drafting, Blocking, and Illegal Pass infringements (Judgment Calls) and these are not subject to either protest or appeal. Following are the most common rule infringements:

• Blocking – Riding on the right side of an athlete without passing or riding on the right hand side of the bike lane when clear of other athletes • Drafting – Following a leading cyclist closer than 12m and failing to pass in 25s OR after being passed, failing to drop back 12m before re-passing • Illegal Pass – Passing on the left • Littering - Discarding items, e.g. tyres, bike bottles, gel wrappers etc. on any part of the course except within sight of an Aid Station • Helmet – Always have your chin strap securely fastened when moving with your bike

A Technical Official will advise you of any time Penalty by calling your number, advising you of the nature of the infringement and showing you a Blue Card. It will then be your responsibility to serve the 5 minute time Penalty at the next Penalty Box. NOTE that any 3 blue card infringements across the course during the event will result in a Disqualification.

Other infringements including:

• Offensive and unsportsmanlike behaviour • Public personal toilet • Outside assistance • The use of electronic equipment are also against the rules and any ONE of these infringements may result in a Disqualification.

I sincerely hope you have a great race, enjoy the experience, and achieve your IRONMAN 70.3 goals.

ATHLETE CHECK-INCheck-In for all athletes participating in IRONMAN 70.3 Colombo will take place at the Shangri-La Hotel Colombo on the following days and time: • Thursday 22nd February 2018 between 10.30am – 7pm • Friday 23rd February 2018 between 10.30am – 7pm • Saturday 24th February 2018 between 9am – 4pm

It is compulsory for all athletes to Check-In during these times. No athlete will be able to Check-In after 4pm on Saturday 24th February 2018.

You are required to show photo identification to register – i.e. Driver’s Licence or Passport.

Please do not take your bike into the Check-In queue as this congests the area and makes it dangerous for other athletes. Please allow time for delays when making travel arrangements.

Please note: it is illegal for someone to race under your name or for you to race under someone else’s name: this will result in disqualifications and ineligibility to race in other IRONMAN events.

During Check-In, athletes will receive the following: • ID wristband (to be worn from when you Check-In through to the end of the race) • Race bib (compulsory on run leg only) • Swim cap – (compulsory) colour based on self-seeding timing (rolling start) • Helmet sticker (placed on the front of the helmet) • Bike seat post sticker (to wrap around the seat post of your bike and stick to itself) • Body Tattoos (number to be placed on right upper arm and letter category to be placed on right calf) • Street Gear Bag (Black) • Street Gear Bag sticker, to be stuck onto your Street Gear Bag • Sponsor promotional items

ID WRISTBANDYour ID wristband must be worn at all times as this will be your entry to ‘athlete only restricted areas.’ This is your only means of entry to transition to rack your bike pre-race and to collect your gear and bike after the race. IRONMAN will not allow access into these areas without athletes wearing their wristband.

TIMING INFOYou will collect your Timing Chip and confirm your identity with the timing personnel during Bike Check-In on 24th February 2018 between 11.30am – 4.30pm at the transition area after you rack your bike.

ATHLETE CHECK-INAt this stage you will re-confirm your information and ensure that your race number matches your timing chip. Please ensure you put it in a safe place and remember to have it with you on race morning. • Timing Chips must be worn on your left ankle. • On race morning, your timing chip must be on to enter transition. Officials will be checking this. • If you do not start the race or pull out of the race for any reason you are to return the Timing Chip to one of the Drop-Out Clerks located at the Information Tents. • If your Timing Chip is not returned or is lost you will be charged US$150 for a replacement. • Timing results will include swim split, bike split, run split and finish time– overall and category results.

If timing chips are not worn throughout the duration of the race, race results will not be available to that athlete.

If a timing chip is lost during the race, the athlete needs to inform an official in Transition, so that officials can do their best to replace that chip in order to record splits for the rest of the race.

WITHDRAWAL & TIMING CHIP RETURNIf you withdraw from the race at any time (pre or during), please inform IRONMAN via one of the Information Desks or Drop-Out Clerks, especially on race day. It is the athlete’s responsibility to return their timing chip. If you fail to return your timing chip, a US$150 replacement charge applies. It is extremely important for all timing chips to be returned to ensure all athletes are accounted for across the event.

Drop-Out Clerks are located at: • Transition (at the Information Desk) • Recovery Area

These tours are also a great opportunity to clarify any transition specific questions.

Outside of these tours, Technical Officials will be available for race specific questions and any queries surrounding rules and regulations.

PRE-RACE BIKE CHECKSYour bike will be visually inspected by a technical official and allowed into transition upon passing this inspection. This is not a guarantee of safety. Athletes are responsible for their bikes being in

If in doubt of passing this visual inspection please visit our bike mechanics prior to Bike Check-in. They will be available onsite at the expo and check-in area at the Shangri-La Hotel.

BLACK STREET GEAR BAGYour Black Street Gear Bag needs to contain all the items you require upon completion of your race. On race morning all Black Street Gear Bags need to be dropped to the Street Gear tent at the northern end of Transition at Galle Face Green. Street Gear Bags will be available for collection in Recovery after the race on Sunday, 25th February 2018.

Athletes are required to apply their own gear bag athlete numbers to their Street Gear bag, which will be provided at Athlete Check-In as part of your Athlete Kits.

It is the responsibility of the athlete to collect, hand in and pick up their Street Gear bags from the Street Gear tent during the specified times, as well as ensure they are marked correctly. Bike pumps may be handed in with the Black Street Gear Bag and will be stored separately to the bags and will be available for collection post-race. SWIM COURSE 1.9KMCUT OFF TIME – 1 HOUR 10 MINUTES AFTER INDIVIDUAL START TIME.

RACE START FORMATKindly note that there will be no access to the sea for warm up and athletes will have to warm up on land.

The race will follow the Rolling Start format, allowing athletes to self-seed themselves into Start Zones prior to the race start. Each Start Zone will align to a different expected swim time with all Start Zones located on the beach.

There will be five different Start Zones to choose from depending on an athlete’s expected swim time. These zones include:

Zone 1: 30mins and under: Yellow Swim CapZone 2: 30mins to 40mins: Purple Swim CapZone 3: 40mins to 50mins: Blue Swim CapZone 4: 50mins to 60mins: Green Swim CapZone 5: 60mins to 70mins: Red Swim Cap

To access the Start Zones, athletes will need to follow the directional signage and instructions of event staff. Access to the start zones will be via the swim exit chute from Transition and Galle Face Walk only. Once athletes exit the transition area, they will line up along Galle Face Walk facing southwards in their respecting starting zones.

At 6.15am the Age Group Rolling Start will begin. This will involve athletes being released in groups of approximately four at a time at short intervals. Once released, athletes will walk down the temporary staircase to get to the beach from Galle Face Walk. Timing arch will be located at the beach and as an individual crosses the start line, their individual time will start. The rolling start will continue until all athletes have crossed the timing mat and commenced their race.

SWIM SUPPORTThere will be a large number of water safety personnel and craft on the water pre and during the swim. The water safety team is there to support you should you require. They will be resourced with an array of boats Jet Skis and IRB’s. At any time should you require the assistance of water safety please raise one arm into the air and they will come to your aid.

Should at any point an athlete decides to abandon the swim, they will be taken to one of two swim extraction points. From here they will be required to confirm their athlete number and be checked over by medical. It is then the athlete’s responsibility to walk back to Transition and hand in their timing chip to the Drop out Clerk.

2018 IRONMAN 70.3 COLOMBO | ATHLETE INFORMATION GUIDE27

IRONMAN SWIMSMARTTop 10 ChecklistAn open-water swim in a triathlon is substantially different from swimming in a pool. To alleviate stress, it’s important that you arrive on race day healthy, fit and prepared. Here’s a top10 checklist to help get you ready.

1. Prepare for Race Conditions • Race day should not be your first open water swim. Make sure some of your training replicates real race conditions, including water temperature, proximity to other swimmers. Wetsuits are not allowed in this race.

2. Race in Shorter Events • Being properly trained is the best way to reduce anxiety. If possible, race in shorter events and clinics to prepare yourself for open water conditions. • For extra guidance, talk to a coach or your local triathlon club.

3. Learn About Course Details • It’s important to prepare yourself mentally as well as physically prior to race day. Thoroughly review the race website and pre-race communication to familiarise yourself with the course. • Keep in mind, every body of water is different, so you’ll need to educate yourself on water current and surf conditions. • Study the event timetable to plan for proper arrival and preparation.

4. Ensure Heart Health • As an athlete in training, you should take the proper steps to assess your health with your physician. • You should have regular medical check-ups especially screening of the heart. This includes physical exam as well as an assessment of your family history and personal heart health.

5. Pay Attention to Warning Signs • If you experience chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, light-headedness or blacking out while training, consult your doctor.

6. Don’t Use New Gear on Race Day • Focus on controlling as much as you can on race day. • You should never race in equipment you haven’t trained in, this is not the time to test new gear. • Make sure your wetsuit fits properly and that your goggles, swim cap and other accessories work properly. • Prepare for the unexpected with backups of all your gear

7. Warm Up on Race Day • Arrive early enough on race day for a proper warm-up prior to the start, preferably in the water. • If you aren’t able to warm up in the water, spend between 5 and 10 minutes getting loose. • Be sure to do some cardio activity, such as a light jog, to increase circulation and prep your muscles.

8. Checkout the Course • Get comfortable with the course by checking out water conditions, the swim entry, exit layouts, along with turn buoy locations. • Identify basic navigation points so that you know what you are swimming towards.

9. Start Easy– Relax and Breathe • Don’t race at maximum effort from the start. • Relax and focus on proper breathing technique as you settle into a sustainable pace.

10. Be Alert and Ask For Help • In a race setting always stop at the first sign of a medical problem. • If you or a fellow athlete needs help, just raise your hand to alert a lifeguard or safety boat. • Race rules allow for competitors to stop or rest at any time during the swim. • Feel free to hold on to a static object like a raft, buoy, or dock. • You may also rest by holding on to a kayak, boat or even a paddle-board. As long as you don’t use it to move forward, you won’t face disqualification

2018 IRONMAN 70.3 COLOMBO | ATHLETE INFORMATION GUIDE30

IRONMAN CYCLESMARTTop 10 ChecklistCompeting in a triathlon event requires training on a bike. To be fully prepared, it’s important that you arrive on event day healthy, fit, and equipped with the proper gear. Fitness can be built indoors, but competing with a group requires the ability to ride safely and competently outdoors. Read on for an essential checklist to get you ready for any two-wheeled challenge.

BEFORE YOU RIDE

1. It starts with your bike • Your seat and handlebars should be adjusted to the appropriate height and reach for you. Work with a fitter to find your optimal bike fit. • Ensure all bolts are tightened properly to avoid coming loose during the ride, and that your brakes and gears are working properly. • Keep your bike clean and your chain lubed. • Use front and rear lights when riding in low light conditions (this may be required by law in your area.) • Tyres should be inflated to the recommended pressure.

2. Learn the basics • Practice clipping in and out of your pedals, as well as starting, stopping, and emergency braking. • If you’re unfamiliar with shifting gears, practice doing this in a low-traffic area. • Practice riding a straight line, and cornering (right, left, U-turns).

3. Suit up • Always wear an approved helmet in training and racing. Helmets should fit properly without moving around on your head while riding, and remain buckled at all times during your ride. • Wear clothing that is designed to function in the weather you will encounter on the ride, and that will help maintain your core body temperature when riding in cold or wet conditions, even during a race. • Choose clothing that is visible in low-light conditions.

4. Be prepared to ride • Carry the appropriate amount of water and nutrition, along with a way to purchase additional supplies if needed. • Know how to use a tyre repair kit and appropriate tools, and be sure to carry them with you.5. Plan ahead • Select a route that limits the number interactions with vehicles – if possible factor in time of day and day of the week. • Always obey all traffic signals and signs. • Where available, ride in dedicated bike lanes and where other bikes are normally present to ensure vehicles are aware of you. • Select a ride distance appropriate to your fitness.

6. Inform others • In the event of an incident, someone should know where you are riding. • Always carry personal identification with you and emergency contact information. • Carry a cell phone for emergencies.

2018 IRONMAN 70.3 COLOMBO | ATHLETE INFORMATION GUIDE31

IRONMAN CYCLESMARTDURING THE RIDE

7. Stay alert • Leave the playlists and podcasts for indoor workouts. • Don’t use your phone while riding – pull off the road if you need to make a call or send a text. • Don’t take photos and selfies while riding. • Keep your head up, particularly when riding in a group. Look at the road and the riders around you, not your bike computer. • Be able to see and hear what is going on around you. When riding in the aerobars, do not look down at the road, look ahead. • When riding in a group, do not get fixated on the rider directly in front of you. Look through so you can anticipate any issues before they happen, and have an exit strategy. • Be easy on the brakes when riding in a group. Ride smoothly, do not overlap wheels, and always come up the inside line of a peloton. • Pay particular attention when approaching aid stations during a race. Do not ride though aid stations in the aerobars.

8. Obey the law • Always stop at stop signs and lights—remember, cyclists have the same responsibilities as vehicles. • Know the traffic laws for your area, especially those regarding riding two abreast or single file. • Know where the vehicles are around you and anticipate that drivers may not see cyclists. • When passing a parked car or another cyclist, make sure there is enough space to avoid contact.

9. Communicate • Use verbal and hand signals so others know if you are stopping or turning. • Make eye contact with drivers and other cyclists. • While riding, let other athletes know you are passing through verbal communication. Watch for hazards in the road including potholes, debris, or water bottles. Point out and verbally communicate these hazards to those riding and racing with you. • Visually and verbally communicate with the specific volunteer in the aid station you will be taking aid from, letting them know you are taking aid directly from them.

10. Safety First • Ride as far to the side of the road as safely possible. Some situations do require that you safely position yourself on the road so that traffic is unable to pass. This might be when making a turn or when not safe for vehicles to pass. • If riding with other people, make sure you are riding single file or allowing traffic to pass from behind you. • When riding in a group, avoid riding in the aerobars unless you are riding in front. Your hands should always be able to get to the brakes quickly. • Taking unnecessary risks might gain you a couple of seconds during your ride, but it could risk you losing your life. Always ride smart.

2018 IRONMAN 70.3 COLOMBO | ATHLETE INFORMATION GUIDE33

RUN COURSE 21.1KMCUT OFF TIME – 8 HOURS 30 MINUTES AFTER INDIVIDUAL START TIME.

TRAFFICRoad closures are in place for the duration to minimise the traffic flow on course and to protect the athletes. There will be vehicular traffic adjacent to the course comprising of event personnel and local residents requiring access, so please exercise vigilance and tolerance at all times.

Normal road rules apply at all times. Police, traffic controllers and event crew will be on course to patrol and direct traffic.
