SummaryThe 6th annual Global Forum at UCLA provides a platform for 100 selected young people across the globe tolearn and advance their causes toward achieving environmental sustainability in the context of the UNMillennium Development Goal (MDG) 7. The event will bring together influential government representatives,scientists, diplomats, experts and corporate executives into an arena with promising young people toshowcase their successful sustainability practices and highlight innovations and new ground-breakingbusiness models and financing methods that effectively address the development of renewable energysources.

The forum is set to encourage young people to get engaged in, develop, and propose new sustainability andrenewable energy initiatives in creative and cordial environment. Each participant will have an opportunityto engage corporate and public decision-makers and his/her peers while drafting group and individualinnovative solutions to address global environmental and alternative energy challenges. The forum willconclude with young participants presenting their plans on group innovation panels. The proposals will beevaluated by leaders in government, the private sector, and civil society, and will be showcased at theconference closing ceremonies. The individuals with best results, with the support of Athgo, will continue thedevelopment of the business models.

Panel 6: The Role of Media

Representatives of private sector, government agencies and NGOs will develop a discussion about cost-effectiveways to encourage ’going green’. The focus is Renewable Energy Certificates, Carbon cap, Carbon Tax, and otherrelevant discussions.

Bringing together private sector representatives from the energy industry, the panel explores sustainable energysolutions. The panelists will discuss technical, strategic and economic issues and will provide insights into challengesand opportunities in the industry.

Representatives from the financial sector will address funding aspects of clean energy. The panel will discusstraditional and innovative funding sources, focusing on the best strategies and opportunities to invest in clean-techmarket and finance renewable energy projects.

Diplomats and experts will analyze sustainable development through the lens of national and international policy.The speakers will look at new directions for policy supporting environmental sustainability and economicdevelopment and will explore the political implications involved in shifting mainstream policies.

Representatives from the private sector, government agencies, and NGOs will explore the complexities andopportunities involved with waste management and recycling solutions. The discussion focuses on the practicalimplementation of a variety of waste management programs.

Representatives from the media and entertainment industry will discuss the role of media in marketing andinfluencing information flows directed toward environmental sustainability. The panel focuses on the driving forceof media in delivering encouraging and timely information, energizing masses and raising awareness aboutenvironmental conditions in the world.

Panel Focus and Objectives

Discussion SessionsThese sessions are quite informal in their structure and presentation. These interactions are of extreme value toour participants. The 60 minute discussions are conducted by 5-8 specialists/officials. Each presenter isassigned an area where a portion of our participants assemble for a talk. The speakers are encouraged tomake a brief presentation (up to 15 minutes– no audio/visual) after which the floor should be open for a Q&Asession.

In this role, he isresponsible for managing the balance of Dell’s growth strategy with goals to minimize Dell’s impact onnatural and human resources. Elements of Mr. Arbogast’s role include managing company relationshipswith stakeholders that help Dell develop sustainable growth strategies, guiding Dell’s product recovery andrecycling programs, climate change impacts, and managing a model of identifying issues that could affectDell’s future growth so that the company can prepare to meet these challenges.

Mr. Diarra has over 25 years of professional experience in international relations, law and development. Hehas advanced and first-hand knowledge and experience of bilateral and multilateral relations and provenskills in international negotiations and international consensus-building. He was also involved in the nationalreconciliation efforts of Mali which paved the road to the country’s peaceful and democraticdevelopment.

He co-chaired the open-ended informal consultations on strengthening the role of ECOSOC which resultedin the adoption of the General Assembly resolution 61/16. He also co-chaired the informal consultationsresolution 60/265 on follow-up to the development outcome of the 2005 World Summit, including MDGs.Ambassador Diarra also is also part of the informal group of Ambassadors known as the “Friends of thesystem-wide coherence”. He has been an active advocate for the cause of Africa, the Least DevelopedCountries and Landlocked Developing Countries as his country uniquely represents all these three groups ofcountries. Because of his well known efforts, he was recently elected as Chairman of the Group ofLandlocked Developing Countries.

Dr. Clark founded Clark Strategic Partners (CSP) in 2004, whose major clients include: Energy Director (whosegoal is to make the nine campuses energy independent and carbon neutral) for the LA Community CollegeDistrict; Energy Technology Advisor for Paramount Pictures; Senior Foreign Energy Advisor (AsianDevelopment Bank) Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR), Peoples Republic of China; and SeniorFellow, Milken Institute. He also sits on the boards for non-profit and for-profit organizations. Clark co-authored “Agile Energy Systems: global lessons from the California energy crisis” (2004). His most recentbook is “Qualitative Economics: toward a science of economics” (2008). Clark’s next book is “SustainableCommunities” (due in Spring 09 from Springer Press). Later in 2009, Clark plans to release: “SustainableDevelopment Tools and Mechanisms” (Elsevier Press). He has over 40 peer reviewed journal articles andnumerous mass media credits including articles, papers documentary video and film on topical issues.

He was Senior Advisor on Renewable Energy, Emerging Technologies, and Finance to California GovernorGray Davis from 2000 to 2003. In 2007, Clark was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize due to his co-authorship and co-editorship for the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)from 1995-2000 in which he is still active today.

Mr. Criel ‘s professional experience has started from 1983, when he started to work with Fortis Bank (largestBelgian bank) at Foreign Trade and Credit Departments. Starting from 1990 till present Mr. Criel is employedwith Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was successively posted in Rome, Brussels (Representation to theEuropean Union), Tel Aviv, Royal Palace, Washington DC, and lastly in Los Angeles.

Paige Donner is an L.A. based journalist, writer and filmmaker. Greening Hollywood is now beingdeveloped into a comprehensive media platform that reports on the ways the entertainment industry, andother Los Angeles community stakeholders, are embracing a more sustainable and environmentallyrespectful way of doing business.

As Counsel to and a member of the Board of Directors of Iceland America Energy, and one of DongellLawrence Finney LLP’s founding named partners, Tal C. Finney has a rare blend of legal, government,environmental, and energy industry experience. Executive Director, Keep California BeautifulAppointed by the Keep California Beautiful (KCB) Board of Directors in April 2007, Ms. Christine Flowers-Ewingbrings a wealth of experience and skills to the organization. During her time with KCB she has overseen therelocation of the organization to Sacramento; developed several partnerships to increase recycling ofvarious materials; served on litter, illegal dumping and marine debris task forces; and lead the KCB Boardthrough rebranding and revitalization of KCB’s vision, mission, values and goals.

Her career experience spans over 23 years in community outreach and environmental education includingcurriculum development, grant writing and implementation; as well as working with various entities toimplement source reduction and recycling programs. She holds Masters Degrees in both BiologicalSciences and Secondary Education Curriculum Development from University of Central Florida. In 1985, MsFlowers-Ewing began her career in education, teaching high school in Orlando, Florida; eventuallybecoming the Environmental Technology Program Director at Valencia College. From 1990- 2004, as aprofessor of biology, she held positions at Valencia College, Washington College and Shasta College. Sheserved as the faculty advisor for the environmental leadership clubs and worked to establish campus wideEnvironmental Advisory Committees.

Mr. Heppe manages business operations at ECG and actively leads a number of projects and programs.David has more than 20 years of leadership experience in technology, business management andmarketing. His industry experience includes networking, communications, digital media and medicalimaging. He has hands-on operational experience building groups and companies from start-up tosustainable growth modes.

Before joining ECG, David was president at Telestream, a leading provider of video and networking solutionsfor broadcast and corporate markets. Prior to that, David was the managing director of TDK Systems Europe,a leader in development and manufacturing of communications cards for Pcs.

Robert M. Hertzberg is the former speaker of the California Legislature - twice unanimously elected on abipartisan vote in 2000 and 2002. Mr. Hertzberg was Speaker during the California Energy Crisis and,together with his leadership team, exhibited extraordinary insight in developing the most comprehensiveenergy conservation standards in the US, led the early fight for renewable portfolio standards, and mademany other significant contributions regarding environmental policy. After leaving the legislature in 2002,Mr. Hertzberg served on the transition team of Governor Schwarzenegger and, in 2005, was a candidate forMayor of Los Angeles narrowly missing the runoff by less than 1%. Mr. Hertzberg then served as Chairman ofthe transition team for Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Together with Mr. Edward J. Stevenson andothers, he, co-founded, Solar Integrated Technologies in South Los Angeles, now a public company, whichwas the 2005 Wall Street Journal recipient of the Innovation Award, in the Energy and Power sector.

Now, as Chairman of G24 Innovations and co-founder of Renewable Capital, Mr. Hertzberg is an activeentrepreneur and leader in global policy concerning Renewable Energy. G24 Innovations is based inCardiff, Wales and manufactures a new type of lightweight and flexible solar cell that generates power inlow, ambient and even indoor conditions. Recently, CNBC European Business chose G24 Innovations asone its Top 100 Low-Carbon Pioneers (January, 2008), and The Guardian (UK) chose Robert as one of the 50People Who Could Save The Planet (January, 2008).

Professor Intriligator's research interests are in the areas of economic theory, econometrics, healtheconomics, and strategy and arms control. His work has involved the development of models and analyticframeworks using economics, decision theory, control theory and other tools to analyze and betterunderstand fundamental economic and societal problems. His most recent work has focused on healthcare reform, the proliferation of nuclear weapons, global security, and the transition to a market economyin Russia.

Sustainability Coordinator, University of California at Los AngelesNurit Katz is UCLA's first Sustainability Coordinator. In this position she is working to foster partnerships amongacademic, research, and operational departments and further the goals and initiatives of the campussustainability program. Before starting in this position she founded the UCLA Sustainable Resource Center in2005 to provide resources for the community on sustainability. As Director of the program she hostednumerous events that brought together leaders in the public and private sectors. She then served asPresident of the Graduate Students Association and helped Dr. Charles Corbett to create a newinterdisciplinary graduate certificate program- Leaders in Sustainability.

Jinah Kim is currently a correspondent for NBC news and for KNBC in Los Angeles. She is also the co-owner ofWorldWise Productions, a video production company specializing in corporate and non-profit videos,based in Los Angeles. She is the president of the Asian American Journalists Association’s Los Angeleschapter. She also sits on numerous boards, including the ALS Association’s national communicationscommittee.

Mr. Joseph F. Klimavicz was named National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) ChiefInformation Officer (CIO) and Director, High Performance Computing and Communications in January2007. In this position, he is responsible for implementing the Clinger-Cohen Act, Federal Information SecurityManagement Act, and other statutory requirements regarding the acquisition, management, and use ofNOAA's information and information technology resources, to include NOAA's high performancecomputing and communications infrastructure.

Mr. Klimavicz has served over 20 years in the federal government. He began his career with the CentralIntelligence Agency (CIA) as an imagery scientist, developing photogrammetric math models in theNational Photographic Interpretation Center, and subsequently, served in line management positionswithin the CIA and the DOD; leading the development of information technology investment plans, andmanaging information technology acquisitions and operations.

Mr. Lechner was named vice president, Energy & Environment in September 2008. In this role, he leads IBM’sefforts in helping clients address the issues and opportunities around energy, the environment, andsustainability. He is responsible for defining strategy and managing the broad portfolio of capabilities andofferings that leverage IBM’s technology innovation, deep industry insight, and business process strategy.

Mr. Lechner has a strong track record for driving key cross IBM initiatives that deliver value to clients of all sizesincluding virtualization, Project Big Green, and IBM’s New Enterprise Data Center Strategy. Previously, hewas vice president for Enterprise Systems addressing IBM’s large enterprise customer base and marketopportunity by bringing to market a unified set of systems, software and services designed to optimize large-scale IT infrastructures. In 1977, Christian Stocks joined the German Foreign Service. His first foreign posting was to Madrid followed bythree years in Bonn as speech writer for the Federal President. In 1985, he became Deputy Consul General inMumbay, India and then served as Counselor for Political Affairs at the German Embassy in London from 1987 to1990. Afterwards, he returned to the Foreign Office and headed the training department for career diplomatsat the German Foreign Office’s Diplomatic School. In 1991, he was asked to serve as Foreign Policy Advisor tothe CDU/CSU parliamentary group of the German Bundestag.

In 1995, he went on to become head of the Political Department at the German Embassy in Madrid. In 2000, hewas appointed as Director General of Foreign Affairs for the Governing Mayor’s office and Chief of Protocol for

the State and City of Berlin. He took up the posting as Consul General of Los Angeles in July, 2005

In December 1990 Hakan Tekin joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey. Mr. Tekin hasworked at the Departments of Culture, Central Asia, Human Rights, Balkans and Personnel within the Ministry.

Mr. Tekin has served at the Turkish Embassies in Abu Dhabi/United Arab Emirates, Sofia/Bulgaria, attended theNATO Defense College Senior Course in Rome and worked at the Permanent Mission of Turkey to the UnitedNations in New York.His post in Los Angeles as Consul General he assumed on 15 April 2007. His area ofresponsibility includes 12 states of the western region of the United States.

Appointed Honorary Consul for Estonia in 1986, he has continued to serve in that capacity since then. He waselected as Treasurer of the Los Angeles Consular Corps, which is the world’s third largest, on two separateoccasions. Mr. Treinman is a lecturer on International Business at Loyola Marymount College and UCLA. He hasan experience of representing a number of foreign commercial enterprises in their American activities;including Italian export companies, an Australian investment syndicate, and a British mobile telephonecompany. Besides, Mr. Treinman has represented American firms in establishing business activities in Estonia.

Mr. Treinman presents Innovation Democracy, Inc. as a Co-founder and General Counsel. This organization is a501(c)(3) organization founded in 2006 and the aim is to support innovation and entrepreneurship in countriesimportant to world stability, including Afghanistan. In addition Mr. Treinman has membership in Board ofDirectors of U.S.-Baltic Foundation, a Washington, D.C. 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 1990. Tory Weber is the Manager of Business Performance in Southern California Edison’s Energy Efficiency Division. Inthis capacity, Tory guides SCE’s reporting, policy, and other aspects of SCE’s $200+ million portfolio of EnergyEfficiency, Low Income Energy Efficiency, and Rate Assistance programs. He has worked in support of SCE’senergy efficiency programs for 16 years. Tory holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Business Administration andEconomics and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Anderson School at UCLA.

In the energy efficiency division, he has worked on all matters related to energy efficiency policy, includingenergy efficiency shareholder incentives, measurement and evaluation, cost effectiveness, and energyefficiency potential, among others. He serves as a subject-matter expert on energy efficiency policy andprograms both within the company as well as in forums around the nation.

Daniel Weiss is co-founder and Managing Partner of Angeleno Group LLC (“AG”), a Los Angeles-based privateequity firm focused on high-growth investments in the energy sector. Prior to the formation of AG, Mr. Weiss wasan attorney at O’Melveny & Myers in Los Angeles, working in the firm’s mergers and acquisitions, internationaland high technology practice groups.

Mr. Weiss represented multiple Global 1000 clients, including utilities and energy related companies, in a widearray of private equity and corporate finance transactions. He also has a significant history of involvement ingovernment, regulatory and public policy entities that deal with the energy sector including work experience inthe White House and the United States Congress.
