Under the auspices of OxNet, Pembroke College is hosting the following summer schools this week: Science, Humanities, Theology & Religion and The Ordered Universe.

The schedules leave plenty of time for private study, group work focused on tutorial problems and posters, and free time; not all the slots are filled with scheduled events. You will though have an individual responsibility to manage your own time and to complete your given assignment at the end of the week when there will be an Awards Ceremony.

There will be occasional slots during the week when we shall share a lecture or event. Humanities and theology pupils may participate in a science lecture and scientists may attend a history or theology seminar or lecture. These sessions are marked in italics on the programme.

Look out too for the Options Board and please do try a session remote from your chosen subject stream.

Throughout the week you will have a team of undergraduate mentors with you – please ask questions about student life and, if need be, ask them to help you with your work. This week is designed to give you a taste of studying at a research intensive university, so do throw yourself into both the work and the non-academic activities. This is a week off from examinations but we shall be testing you in other ways!

I’d like to take this opportunity to extend a special welcome to our guests from overseas; those from Tufts University, Boston in the United States and those pupils and mentors who are attending from rural India via the Karta Institute.

I am delighted also to welcome our OxNet Resident Artist for the week, Alex Carr. More about her celebrated work can be found at: www.alexandracarr.co.uk/

The formal Joseph Owen Dinner will be in Hall on Thursday which all the Access College will attend.

I hope you enjoy this challenging week. Remember you will only get out of it what you put in. If you are ambitious for yourself, we will match that ambition.
