Values
“There is no value in the economic success of any industrial initiative unless it is accompanied by a commitment to social progress”.
In line with the values of the Group’s founder, in 1963 the Merloni family set up the “Aristide Merloni Foundation” aiming to support the creation and development of new businesses through the supply of loans, capital investments, and technical and organizational advisory services. After making a key contribution towards the development of the local economy through its activities, the Foundation has now become an Institute for the study and dissemination of entrepreneurial culture, through research, conferences and publications in collaboration with Public Institutions and Universities.

Vision
By 2020 the Group aims to have 80% of its business coming from high efficiency and renewable solutions.Ariston Thermo’s ability to combine energy efficiency with innovation and design is shaping the future of the thermic comfort industry.
In 2011, we reached the 30% target
Ariston Thermo’s goals and strategic pillars for leading the future:
Global growth both in emerging and more mature markets
Energy efficiency and renewable solutions
Continuous improvement and the pursuit of excellence
A top management team
21
Ariston Thermo is constantly looking ahead. What are its goals?
In order to identify future goals, we need to know where we are coming from.Over the last decade, the company’s turnover has tripled and our presence has spread worldwide. We have developed a highly skilled team, reinforcing our managerial culture, improving our industrial footprint, achieving major economic and financial targets and incorporating larger businesses. Today Ariston Thermo is a global leader with 87% of its turnover coming from outside of Italy. We view this solid position as a leverage to achieve worldwide growth. We will grow by focusing on energy efficiency and renewable solutions with cutting-edge products. In emerging markets, we will grow by consolidating our industrial and commercial presence and promoting our business model, our brand and products.
What are the opportunities ahead in the current complex economic scenario?
In relation to the competition, Ariston Termo enjoys an excellent, well-balanced position both geographically and in the various business areas. We will aim at creating added value in some areas and upsizing in others, since in our sectors size is key. From a geographical point of view, we see opportunities both in Europe, where we have more ambitious energy saving goals in line with the current evolution of our industry, and in emerging markets
such as China, India, Russia and many others. With regards to products, we will focus on technological synergies.
Is energy efficiency still one of your strategic pillars?
Our industry is one of the largest energy consumers, therefore it is our major responsibility as a company to ensure the same level of comfort with lower energy use. Energy efficiency and renewable-based energy are still at the core of our research and strategy with a view to providing increasingly green and eco-friendly solutions. In this way we will also meet the needs of our most demanding clients and we will ensure compliance with increasingly rigorous environmental regulations.
Is there a formula to beat the competition?
There are no magic formulas. Our task is to pursue excellence and strive for continuous improvement in all areas, starting from our people.Today we have a highly skilled management team in our company and a rewarding multinational working environment. Our corporate governance has been recently reinforced with the appointment of a new CEO, no longer a family member. Our clear business leadership and our family’s strong commitment ensure our long-term vision and provide the basis for further growth and development.

Vision
From 1990 to 2010, the global energy produc-tion has increased by approximately 40%, with an annual average CO
2 emissions growing from
21 Gt to 29 Gt.Energy is the engine of the world’s economic and social development; by 2035, primary en-ergy consumption, both residential and com-mercial, is expected to increase by 30%. This upturn is mainly driven by consumption in emerging countries. With CO
2 emissions also
expected to rise by 20%, the planet’s sustain-ability is at risk.
Alongside the measures being discussed within institutions and administrations, a growing role is assigned to the strategic choices of the industry, which in some cases act to promote green industrial policies for sustainable growth.
In Europe the transport sector accounts for 31% of the total energy consumption and the indus-try for 28%. Thermic comfort accounts for 30% (21% for residential use and 9% for the service sector).
In this light, the contribution of thermic comfort products to the reduction of energy consump-tion and the containment of CO
2 emissions is of
paramount importance.

Energy savings
Energy consumption
SunSolar thermal technology is the simplest and most effective way of converting solar energy into hot water.
Air / Ground / WaterHeat pump technology uses original heat sources, such as air, ground and water, to heat water and houses.
Energy RecoveryRenewable energies are integrated with technologies that allow for maximum efficiency and minimum consumption. Condensing and micro co-generation technologies capture the energy stored in fossil fuels, recovering energy waste and generating additional heat and electricity.

25
Water heatersThanks to technical innovations and advanced functions, our cutting edge electric and gas water heaters can deliver up to 20% energy savings through increased energy efficiency. Shape Premium is an innovative water heater equipped with high thermal insulation and intel-ligent ECO control to adjust energy consump-tion based on user’s needs.
Heat pump water heatersThe new air-to-water Nuos heat pump is the ecological evolution of traditional water heaters. The integration of heat pump technology to our water heaters allows for energy efficient solu-tions that extract the heat directly from the air and use it as a renewable source to produce hot water, thus achieving energy savings up to 70%.
Solar thermal Solar thermal systems capture renewable en-ergy from the sun and deliver up to 70% of hot water needs and up to 20% of heating needs. Our wide range of solar thermal solutions is de-signed to meet the world market demand. The innovative Auron DF vacuum tube collec-tor allows for highly efficient harnessing of solar energy, even with low solar radiation and mild outside temperatures.
Heat pumps Electric heat pumps and new gas heat pumps convert energy from the environment in heat-ing at zero cost and with zero emissions, with a saving up to 55% on energy and CO
2 emissions.
Aerotop G is the air-to-water heat pump for heating and water heating, designed to maxi-mize performance with reduced noise.
Boilers The range of conventional condensing boilers for retrofit installations and new homes delivers up to 35% energy savings.Talia Green Hybrid is a system combining a condensing boiler with an electric heat pump, that automatically selects the most efficient generator according to the system’s heat re-quirements and working conditions.
Micro co-generation systems (CHP)At the forefront of our R&D activities, the new micro co-generation system use solid oxide fuel cells or Stirling engines. They produce electric power and heat exactly where they are needed and allow for a 55% saving on average European installations.

For the third year Ariston Thermo has achieved and exceeded
its objectives, yet ambitious, of growth and profitability.
These results are the fruit of a high performing management team
that has been consolidating over the last few years up to become
a major asset to the Group.
In the light of the current rapidly changing scenarios the ability
to be adaptive, fast and sharp in implementing our plans
will be a key competitive factor to ensure mid-to long-term success.
In recent years the Group has grown in many directions and consolidated
several innovative capabilities. The overall productivity of our industrial
system has significantly improved, processes have been redesigned
and much more investments in innovative technologies have been made.
Ariston Thermo has been able to gain market share while improving
the quality of its mix. The Group has revamped its ability to innovate
systems and solutions aimed at reducing emissions and increasing
energy efficiency. Growth has been achieved not only organically
but also through targeted acquisitions and mergers that have
strengthened our overall ability to compete.
Looking to the Group’s future growth objectives, however, we need
to keep building on and consolidating what we have already achieved,
but also to acquire and apply new skills quickly and decisively.
If we can meet these new challenges as we have done over
the last three years, the Group will become stronger and will continue
to provide opportunities for professional growth for all its people.

Social responsibility and industrial develop-ment: an objective reached with the publica-tion of the “Environmental, safety and quality policy” signed by the director of each plant, a document reaffirming the importance of work-place safety, product quality and environmen-tal protection, as major factors for achieving sustainable development.Today we are completing the certification plan for the Group’s plants according to the ISO 14001 standard, which ensures compliance
with current legislation, promotes pollution-prevention and promotes continuous improve-ment in environmental performance. These plants also apply OHSAS 18001 stand-ards: the Group guarantees health, safety and hygiene in the workplace, both through con-stantly updated and perfected management systems, and by spreading a health and safety culture with a view to preventing and effectively managing occupational hazards.
Reducing packaging
In 2011 a project was launched to reduce and change the packaging process for various products. By totally eliminating Styrofoam (replaced by a 100% cardboard, biodegradable coating pasted to the product with water-based paint), both packaging waste and the bulk of the product were reduced, achieving greater efficiency in transport.
Reducing our product packaging by 15% and rationalising the use of space meant deliver-
ing 25% more boxes in each container shipped.

tion and waste production in the Group’s major plants. The performance of 4 of the Group’s ma-jor Italian plants is shown by way of example.
Installation of photovoltaic systems at Osimo, Genga and Borgo Tufico plants
For several years, Ariston Thermo has been pro-viding its plants with photovoltaic systems, par-ticularly in Italy, with the installation of panels at
the Osimo, Genga and Borgotufico plants, and an ongoing feasibility study at Resana.Installed capacity currently amounts to 1,483 kWp for an area of 10,000 square metres, me-aning a saving of around 900 tonnes per year in terms of avoided CO
2 emissions.
Environmental impact of our products
Every Italian citizen generates about 16kg of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) per year, a continually growing amount, with a major impact on the environment.Ariston Thermo is a founding member of Ecodom, Europe’s largest national consortium for transportation management and treatment of end of life appliances.
Thanks to Ecodom, 86,000 tons of WEEE are handled for a saving of over 600,000 MWh in electrical energy with a consequent reduction in emissions of about 1,600,000 tons of CO
