Bumling

‘Bumling’ means boulder in Swedish, and is used colloquially to describe things colossal or otherwise unwieldy. It is what a friend of the designer Anders Pehrson allegedly called Peh-rson’s new pendular lamp when it was first exhibited at the 1968 lighting fair in Gothen-burg. The lamp in question was bulbous, bright green and over half a metre wide. This was the birth of Bumling, a Swedish design classic.

Bumling was first launched in six different siz-es: 190, 250, 300, 400, 485, and 600 mm. The metal body of the lamp was spray-painted in a wide array of colours; it became an immediate success in Sweden, and soon internationally as well. The waiting time from order to deliv-ery extended to several months, and the little factory in Åhus could not keep up with pro-duction. Instead, external manufacturers were called upon to meet the demands.

High gloss finish and fine details are some of the trademarks of Bumling. White lacquered interior and a narrow opening at the top gives a nice light emission.

Three-step switch on the top means that the luminaire can be switched with either one or the other light source, or both.

During the 1970s, a whole range of Bumling lamps was launched. The popularity of ta-ble, floor and wall versions, alongside many variations on the original pendular Bumling, made this lamp a true design icon within Swe-den and beyond.

Nowadays the 400 and 600 mm models are produced with a lampshade in brushed alu-minium, or with a red or white varnish. Addi-tionally, ateljé Lyktan produces one model in ”the colour of the year”, which changes annu-ally. Other colours can be specially ordered. Despite earning its iconic status in the 1970s, Bumling still looks modern in today’s homes, and represents great Swedish quality and de-sign now as then.
