Each Question Carries Equal Marks

Answer any TWO of the following 2 X 5 = 10

1.What is regeneration, reheating and intercooling in a Gas Turbine system? Explain how theseeffect the thermal efficiency of a simple open cycle gas turbine plant?

[5]2.A gas-turbine power plant generates 25 MW of electric power. Air enters the compressor

at 10C and 0.981 bar and leaves at 4.2 bar and gas enters the turbine at 850C. If the turbine and compressor efficiencies are each 80%, determine

(1) The temperatures at each point in the cycle

(2) The specific work of the cycle

(3) The specific work of the turbine and the compressor

(4) The thermal efficiencies of the actual and ideal cycle

(5) The required airflow rate.

[5]

3.At a particular ring of a reaction turbine the blade speed is 67 m/s and the flow of

steam is 4.54 kg/s, dry saturated, at 1.373 bar. Both fixed and moving blades have inlet and exit angles of 35 and 20 respectively.

Determine:

(a) Power developed by the pair of rings.

(b) The required blade height which is to be one tenth of the mean blade ring diameter [5]

Explain the fallowing types of condensers.
