Anatomical techniques What are they and what do they achieve?

Help us explore structure and relationships

    Link between structure and function

    Can include dissection, plastination,

    skeletonisation all designed to?

    Can include dissection, plastination,

    skeletonisation all designed to?

Gather information Is this the same as data?

    What constitutes data?

    What is anatomical data?

  • 8/2/2019 AT331_12Wk1

    11/25

    Anatomical data Descriptive

Pathway of nerve branches to the lateral incisor

    teeth

    Quantitative

Number of cadavers showing Palmaris brevis

    Qualitative

    Attachments ofPalmaris brevis

Combinations of all three are common

How do we collect data in anatomy?

    Pathway

    Appearance

    Colour density

    Measurement computerised or manual

    Relative or absolute lengths

    Weights

Volumes (e.g. intercranial capacity of skull)

Is collecting data science? Not on its own. We need to make sense of it

and use it to answer our questions.

    Analyse

So how do we analyse anatomical data?

Qualitative and descriptive are not as easy

    Comparison with reference or standard

    Drawing linkages between e.g. embryological

    derivation, phylogenetic links

Is collecting data science? How do people report on their scientific work?

    Why?

What does anatomical research look like?

Is collecting data science? How do people report on their scientific work?

    publish

    Why? Communicate to others

What does anatomical research look like?

Record what was done so it can be replicated

Draw conclusions from analysis of data

example Research project on tail-docking in terriers

    Clinicians report problems with urinary

    continence associated with docked tails

    continence associated with docked tails

    What would be yourresearch question?

How would you go about answering it?

Anatomical techniques Anything that helps us explore morphology

Can be used to produce data

    Data recording

    Descriptive

    Quantitative

    Need thorough, complete, accurate records

Analysis methods or techniques to make that

    possible

Next. Compliance with the anatomy act for

    dissectors

  • 8/2/2019 AT331_12Wk1

    21/25

The Anatomy Act State government legislation (1930)

    Operationalised by regulations

Monitored by the Health Department Institutions apply for an anatomy licence

Health Dept and Curtin approve a licence-

holder who is responsible for compliance at

    that institution.

  • 8/2/2019 AT331_12Wk1

    22/25

Anatomy Act Compliance Curtin approve a licence-holder who is

responsible for compliance at that institution.

Curtin must show compliance with all relevantActs of Parliament (State and Federal)

    E.g. anti-discrimination, Oc H&S, record keeping,

    copyright, gene technology etc etc

Compliance monitored through Legal andCompliance Office at Curtin using

    Responsible Officers.

  • 8/2/2019 AT331_12Wk1

    23/25

Anatomy Act Compliance Curtins licence-holder is the Responsible

    Officer for compliance.

Must ensure that we abide by the Act Must authorise persons to be able to view

    human cadaver material

Must ensure that authorised persons are

trained & know their responsibilities to the Act We use checklist forms to remind students

    and staff.

The Anatomy Act Will return to talk more about

What Curtin does to comply with the Act

How we deal with breaches of compliance

    Legal aspects of cadaver usage

How the Anatomy Act has changed over the years

    Differences across Australia

Ethical and legal aspects of body bequests
