Bionic hand provides sensory feedbackRoboticists and doctors working in Switzerland and Italy have come together to develop a bionic hand that provides sensory feedback in real time, meaning that an amputee can be given back the ability to feel and modify grip like someone with a ‘real’ hand.

Using a combination of surgically implanted electrodes, connected at one end to the nervous system, and at the other end to sensors, and an algorithm to convert signals, the team has produced a hand that sends information back to the brain that is so detailed that the wearer could even tell the hardness of objects he was given to hold.

The team say that Lifehand 2 produces a life-like sensation of feeling that has never before been achieved in prosthetics.

Results of the 700 tests performed during the study were positive, showing that even when the subject was tested under audio and visual deprivation he was able to modify his grip according to what he was holding – so a soft object such as a sponge or an orange was naturally held with a softer grip than a hard object such as a cricket ball.

By the end of four weeks of testing, 93% accuracy was recorded for pressure control in the index finger and it was found that the brain automatically assimilated data from multiple sensors in the palm of the hand.

Changes for Moving & Handling PeopleThere will be no exhibition alongside the Moving & Handling People event next year, but companies that supply the equipment for the workshops will be able to get in front of the delegates.

The organisers of the Moving & Handling People event have announced changes to the 2015 date that sees the removal of the exhibition element of the event.

The exhibition has been an established dairy date for a number of companies over the years but the number of stands has reduced in recent times. The move sees a greater emphasis on a ‘workshop’ style of event although companies that are featured in the sessions, with delegates using the equipment, will still have a significant involvement.

The 21st anniversary of the event takes places on Tuesday 27th and Wednesday 28th January 2015 at a new venue in the City of London.

Familiar sensations across prosthetic handA prosthetic system being developed by Case Western Reserve University and the Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center is enabling patients to ‘feel’ again. Two patients have begun to feel sensations that are familiar and are able to control their prosthetic hands with more dexterity.

Dustin Tyler, an associate professor of biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve and director of the research said: “Our goal is not just to restore function, but to build a reconnection to the world. This is long-lasting, chronic restoration of sensation over multiple points across the hand. The work reactivates areas of the brain that produce the sense of touch.”

The system, which is limited to the lab at this point, uses electrical stimulation to give the sense of feeling. But there are key differences from other reported efforts.

First, the nerves that used to relay the sense of touch to the brain are stimulated by contact points on cuffs that encircle major nerve bundles in the arm, not by electrodes inserted through the protective nerve membranes.

Second, to provide more natural sensations, the research team has developed algorithms that convert the input from sensors taped to a patient’s hand into varying patterns and intensities of electrical signals.

Third, the system has worked for 2 ½ years in one patient and 1½ in another. Other research has reported sensation lasting one month and, in some cases, the ability to feel began to fade over weeks.

Support for OT educationAs part of Invacare’s commitment to training and education, the company has supporting a new state-of–the-art facility for Occupational Therapists in Worcester University.

A fully equipped simulated community home which features Invacare’s popular Medley Ergo Community Bed and Softform pressure reducing mattress, has recently opened and is designed to give Occupational Therapy students practical experience as they train for their work in the community care environment.

New bath board designed by OTAn occupational therapist has designed a new bath board and is searching for a licence partner to turn her idea into reality.

Ginnie Garlick has seen patients use bath boards which are laid across a bath to provide a splash proof seat while washing. But there is no space for shower curtains to hang in the bath, meaning water spills onto the floor which causes a mess and could potentially risk an injury.

The 30-year-old has worked with Paul Magee, senior product designer at Coventry University Health Design & Technology Institute (HDTI), to create a perforated aluminium bath board which provides a space for the shower curtain to slip into. The project was supported by the Coventry University SME Engagement Fund. Ginnie works as an occupational therapist at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability in Putney.

Robot to help stroke patientsA major new national research programme is using robot assisted training to help stroke patients regain movement in their affected arm. It is being led by stroke specialists at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, with researchers at Newcastle University and other UK institutions involved.

It is hoped that over 700 stroke patients will participate in the research project that has received a £3 million research grant from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

During robot assisted training, the person who has had a stroke sits at a table facing a computer screen and places their arm onto the device. The therapist then asks the patient to undertake some arm exercises such as moving between targets on the computer screen. If the person is unable to move their arm then the robot moves the patient’s arm to complete the task. If the patient initiates movement, the robot provides adjustable levels of assistance to facilitate the person’s arm movement – all of which helps the brain and arm to learn to work together again.

New technology available for stroke and muscular dystrophy sufferersOttobock has introduced a new lightweight, low profile ankle support for people struggling to walk due to stroke, MS or brain injury. The WalkOn Reaction Ankle-Foot Orthosis (AFO) is designed to help lift and support slight to severe drop foot. It is comfortable, discreet and works like a spring to improve walking, stability and conserve energy.

The WalkOn Reaction is suitable for a wide range of conditions including; weak dorsiflexion, post-stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular atrophy and peroneal paralysis, slight knee extension impairment and partial foot amputation. It is also suitable for almost any patient weight.

It has smooth edges – so there is no risk of chafing, discomfort or pressure points, making it an ideal solution for active users. It is designed to last for two million steps and yet lose only 20% of its strength over this period.

Get a Butt Print with easeA group of experts and interested parties from commerce and academia met recently to look at the damaging impact of Shear Forces, alongside pressure and humidity, on the good health of skin, and how difficult it is to measure these forces.

First: what are Butt Prints? Butt Prints are produced by pressure mapping systems, and are images of the otherwise unseen forces. The pressure mapping systems from BodiTrak is unique in showing where the greatest Shear Forces are likely to occur, alongside uneven pressure distribution, on different seating and bed surfaces, meaning that the best harm-free seating or bed solution can be found for a client.

BodiTrak is also unique in providing a simple and hassle-free ‘plug and play’ solution straight out of your bag.

Traceability the key for sling rangeThe Osprey Sling Company has introduced ‘Traceability Straps’ on its entire sling range. All slings will carry a permanent record of the Safe Working Load, Serial Number and Contact details.

The company says that, after discussions with loan stores and LOLER examiners it was apparent that many slings, still in good condition, are failed at the LOLER examination and are thrown away, simply because the label has become illegible. The new straps will allow slings to be identified long after the label has worn away, so that the sling can be relabelled and used again in the community.

Postural management optionThe Chilli Bean posture cushion offers postural management and pressure relief. It incorporates the same core benefits as regular posture cushions but with a much greater flexibility, as the surface area of the product is much greater. Unlike regular bean bags the Chili Bean posture cushion retains its position set, but then adapts to a new position when required. It can be used as a soft bean bag to relax or hard shell for posture support.

Online Knee Selection tool launchedThe new Knee Selection online tool from Ottobock analyses amputees’ needs, daily life and activities to find the best knee joint for their individual requirements.

The online app asks multiple choice questions based on the mobility grade of the amputee, the user’s weight class and what activities they participate in regularly in everyday life. It then quickly determines which prostheses would be most suitable and provides in-depth product details, including how effective each is for achieving selected activities and a 360 degree video of each knee.

The new Knee Selection tool can be accessed at www.ottobock.com/kneeselect

Smartphone measures gaitA smartphone has been adapted to measure an individual’s walking gait with the aim of preventing falls.

The technology has been developed at Purdue University and is being commercialised as SmartGait.

Shirley Rietdyk, PhD, associate professor in Purdue University’s Department of Health and Kinesiology said: “We know that people who are more likely to fall have slower gait speeds and variable stride time, step length, and step width. But it’s hard to gather that information in an everyday environment.”

Researchers adapted a conventional smartphone with a downward-looking, wide-angle lens and a special app engineered to allow the phone to record and calculate gait measurements. The smartphone is worn on the waist, and the system then records gait by measuring the distance between coloured ‘foot markers’ attached to the tip of each shoe.

You can see a video on Smartgait at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLXnTx6Rb6A&feature=youtube

New playing card systemA new playing card system to help people with disabilities is now on the market thanks to support from Coventry University Health Design & Technology Institute (HDTI).

The Eezee Hand playing card system was conceived by inventor Charles Henderson, with advice from HDTI, to help those with limited dexterity to pick up and handle a deck of cards in comfort and with ease.

Guy Smallman, Commercial Development Director at HDTI, said: ““So many people who used to enjoy playing cards aren’t able to do so simply because they no longer have the dexterity they once had. Holding cards can be very difficult and uncomfortable for the ageing population, particularly people with arthritis.”

Student Audio Design Sparks Memories Stephanie Post, a fourth-year student studying Digital Interaction Design at Dundee University, has worked with a Bupa care home team to help develop ‘Sound Sparks’, a unique audio player device which helps people with dementia connect with sounds from their past.

The invention resembles a speaker box and works with a series of pre-programmed coloured tags, such as an old-fashioned microphone or a movie camera, which play recorded sounds when they are placed on the device. The tags play various tunes to stir memories, such as ‘40s music’ and quotes from the film Casablanca.

This Article may not be tested to ISO Standards but... ...Our Bodypoint Belts, Harnesses and Fittings are!

How are postural support devices tested?

The selection or prescription of the most appropriate postural support device should be partially dependent on its ability to withstand static and repeated loads. Tests involve mounting the device on a rigid test fixture to simulate a wheelchair, and applying forces to simulate normal usage. In the standard the maximum allowable slip for both tests is 10mm. Typical slip for a Bodypoint® belt or harness is no more than 0-5mm, hence you are guaranteed a positioning device that will stay in position, perform as expected, and assure safety in positioning.

What does ‘complying to the ISO standard’ mean to a therapist or an engineer? If a pelvic positioning or trunk support device meets the ISO Standard 16840-3 testing, you know that you are prescribing a product that is safe to use, and is not putting your client’s life at risk. Deaths have occurred as a result of belts and harnesses not performing safely, and from incorrect positioning. Assured durability means you avoid repeat visits to re-fit, or replace the devices. Postural devices that perform and meet standards yield better clinical outcomes and higher client satisfaction.

Using Bodypoint® belts, harnesses and fittings will leave you assured that the devices you prescribed will deliver.

What does ‘complying to the ISO standard’ mean to a wheelchair user?

If a pelvic positioning or trunk support device meets the ISO standard 16840-3 testing, it gives the wheelchair user an assurance of safety, performance, and durability. It suggests that the device fitted will not fail due to poor quality, broken grommets, slippage, over-stretched material, or any other failure or hazard. One can rely on the prescribed postural support device to perform and fit as it should, and achieve the positioning goal. Being prescribed a positioning device that has been tested to the ISO standard will lead to better trust in the prescriber.

Using Bodypoint® belts, harnesses, and fittings will ensure that the wheelchair user is safe, secure, and satisfied.

What does ‘complying to the ISO standard’ mean to a Wheelchair Service Manager? As a Wheelchair Service Manager, you can be assured that pelvic positioning, and trunk support devices will not pose risks to users, and in turn will not affect the reliability of your service.

Maintaining annual budgets for buying equipment is becoming increasingly important, and equipment that has not been tested to the standard could increase costs and have a negative impact on the profitability of the service. A tested product will ensure performance and durability. Although the initial cost of untested equipment may be lower, broken grommets, slippage, over-stretched material, or other failures can cause service calls that translate into higher overall costs, and more importantly, could lead to injures for your clients.

By using Bodypoint® belts, harnesses, and fittings you will definitely know that the postural support devices being prescribed at your service are safe and reliable, and in turn save you money in the long-run.

Bodypoint Belts, Harnesses, and Fittings have been tested to ISO standard 16840-3: 2014, which applies to pelvic positioning and trunk support devices. Standards-tested products can be trusted to deliver the durability, safety, and performance that you expect to see from postural support devices.
