Prairie Breezes Presents Mo’ Betta Music Friday, February 8 • 4:15 - 5:00 p.m. • Lewis Auditorium

Established in 2005, the Mo’ Better Music ensemble is a collaborative effort between community volunteers, the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center, and the UIUC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Public Engagement. The program is designed to encourage the spirit of indigenous creativity through jazz, blues, gospel, and other popular musical forms, and to encourage young musicians to develop their talent and musical skills.

Join us when Mo’ Betta Music inspires and entertains the library community with their amazing talent. Prairie Breezes concerts take place on the second Friday of most months and are generously sponsored by Peggy and Bob Podlasek in memory of Greg Bliss.

Based in Champaign-Urbana, Desafinado is a seven-piece ensemble that plays a combination of samba, bossa nova, and MPB (musica popular Brasileira). Come warm up with the sweet sounds of this popular, local group, as they dazzle with vocals, classical guitar, flute, congas, mandolin, percussion and piano/melodica.

Desafinado is Elis Artz (vocals), Nikos Vergis (percussion), Gabriel Motta (guitar), Luciano

Tosta (mandolin and percussion), Tom Paynter (flute, melodica, and piano), David Cubberly (bass), and Giraldo Rosales (congas).

Directed by Jim Butterworth, Aaron Lubarsky, and Lisa Sleeth, Seoul Train is a riveting exposé of the life and death of North Koreans who attempt escape from their homeland and China via the secretive “underground railroad.” Through vérité footage, personal stories, and interviews, the award-winning documentary delves into the complex geopolitics behind this growing and potentially explosive humanitarian crisis.

AsiaLENS is a series of free public film screenings and lecture/discussion programs on issues reflecting contemporary life in Asia. The series is organized by the Asian Educational Media Service, a program of the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
