In February, the Board asked me to extend my term to December 2013, and I am pleased to say that I have agreed to stay on as Executive Director.

The challenge that excites me most is that of strengthening and deepening our relevance in the hearts and minds of the community. Without you, we wouldn’t be here today. With you, I’m confident we will adapt to changing times and grow to provide the people of Saskatchewan and Regina with greater access to the visual arts, and continue to be a public institution the community is proud of.

Over the years, the Gallery has grown with the generosity of our community: individual and corporate supporters, and, of course, the support of all levels of government, the University of Regina, the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust and the MacKenzie Gallery Volunteers.

Now as we look ahead to our sixth decade, we have become increasingly conscious that in order to be sustainable the Gallery must increase its annual operating and capital funding, amongst other things. We will only garner that support by making a strong case for the Gallery based on our vision, our plan and especially the value we provide you and

your neighbours. In the coming months we will be talking with you about the MacKenzie’s future, and seeking to build that future together.

It won’t have escaped your notice that we are in the age of the iPad, app, and social media — we will be using these more and more to link our communities together, share art experiences and collect feedback. To that end, our new website (made possible with the generous support of the Government of Canada) has a number of features that will make it easier for you to find information, and tell us what you think about our exhibitions and events.

And don’t be surprised if you are asked to participate in a survey to help us better understand what we can do for you.

As we increase these interactive activities, both in the Gallery and online, we can improve our program delivery, reduce our reliance on the costs of paper and postage and open up important conversations about the future of Saskatchewan’s largest public art gallery — these will be exciting conversations!

As for today, with spring taking hold, sooner than later it seems, I encourage you to come to the Art in Bloom Lunch and Fashion Shows, May 10-11. This long-standing fundraiser put on by the Volunteers is a wonderful show of support for the Gallery and showcases the creativity resident in Regina. I’m also personally looking forward to our Celebration of Giving, May 29, and the opportunity to recognize the generosity of our many friends.

On the surface, John Noestheden and Shuvinai Ashoona represent an unlikely pairing for joint solo shows. Noestheden, who has recently moved from Regina to Hamilton, is widely admired for his crystalline visions of the cosmos. Ashoona, a much sought-after Inuit artist, is the creator of startlingly original images of the land inspired by her Cape Dorset home.

In 2008, Calgary curator Wayne Baerwaldt invited the artists to collaborate on a monumental banner for the Stadthimmel (City Sky) project in Basel, Switzerland. The result was Earth and Sky, a drawing with both Arctic landscapes and astronomical bodies, which the artists transferred to a 40-meter-long outdoor banner that caught the eyes of spectators on the street below. A second banner was produced for Toronto’s Nuit Blanche later that year.

In recognition of this important international project, the five-metre-long preparatory drawing for Earth and Sky will be on display along with other collaborative drawings, linking the two exhibitions.

While never formally trained in the graphic arts, Shuvinai Ashoona grew up in a rich artistic environment. Her father Kiugak, mother Sorosilooto, grandmother Pitseolak Ashoona, and aunt Napachie Pootoogook are all renowned Inuit artists. Rendered with meticulous detail and precision, Ashoona’s drawings blend innovative compositions with objects and elements of everyday life in Cape Dorset. While earlier works featured complex landscapes and shifting perspectives, new works depict human figures, and utilize a wide spectrum of colours.

For the past twenty years, John Noestheden has produced large-scale works on paper. The history of astronomical observation has inspired a good portion of that work, from the flaming tails of Halley’s comet embroidered into the Bayeux tapestry to the latest galactic revelations from the Hubble Space Telescope. Ironically, signal noise and loss of fidelity are as much a part of these images as the desire for true knowledge.

The exhibitions Sky and Earth offer a chance to consider the remarkable visions of two artists working from two different cultural perspectives. While the images differ, the questions are the same. How do we know what we know? What is the ground of our existence and the limits of our vision? Their artworks help articulate our place in the cosmic order, while acknowledging the boundaries of our comprehension.

Ruins to Renaissance: The Rise of the MacKenzie Bequest April 21 to October 14, 2012

The 100th anniversary of the Regina Tornado is also the 100th anniversary of the MacKenzie Collection.

The story of the MacKenzie Art Gallery’s permanent collection properly begins in 1912, the year a savage tornado reduced much of Regina to rubble. Norman MacKenzie, a prosperous Regina lawyer and aspiring art collector, saw his entire collection of fine paintings destroyed in the tornado — save one, François Musin’s Marine Scene (shown in detail here), which ironically depicts a terrible storm.

Like the city around him, MacKenzie rebuilt — collecting Italian Renaissance paintings, antiquities of Asia and the Middle East and contemporary works until his death in 1936.

It was MacKenzie’s dream to share his treasures with the people of Saskatchewan. At the time of his death, he bequeathed his collection to what is now the University of Regina with a condition that it be accessible to the public. He was, in a way, an angel investor in the cultural capital of our province.

The MacKenzie Art Gallery was named in honour of his collection and his contribution. We continue to preserve and exhibit the artwork and antiquities. It is a testament to MacKenzie’s tenacity that the tornado marked the beginning, not the end, of his activity as a collector. And it is a testament to his vision that his collection is now the cornerstone of Saskatchewan’s largest public art gallery, seen by more than 90,000 people each year.

As part of the Spiraling Forces Festival, this exhibition traces the fascinating story of how MacKenzie’s collection was rebuilt.

And be sure to visit the Bobbie Taylor Resource Area to see fabulous archival photos of people rebuilding the city of Regina after the Tornado of 1912. (See cover image!)

Out of the Vault: This exhibition is a collaboration between New Dance Horizons and the MacKenzie Art Gallery, presented as part of the Spiraling Forces Festival with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, the Saskatchewan Arts Board, and the City of Regina Arts Advisory Committee. The Spiraling Forces Festival is supported by Canadian Heritage, Community Initiative Fund, and the City of Regina.

The Spiraling Forces exhibition was developed in collaboration between New Dance Horizons and the MacKenzie Art Gallery as part of the Spiraling Forces Festival.

It features contemporary works from the MacKenzie’s permanent collection that share many of the same general themes of the Spiraling Forces Festival — forces of nature, wind, sky, devastation and creation. Large-scale abstractions by Marcel Barbeau and Kenneth Lochhead, which evoke the sweeping energies of the rain and wind, are joined by the avian imagery of Jean-Paul Riopelle and Julie Oakes. Michael Olito’s towering horsehead wind-vane serves as a sentinel for the exhibition.

Performance:The Spiraling Forces exhibition will also be the stage for the world premiere of Breath of the Universe. The performance is the result of a collaboration by Canadian dance legend Margie Gillis, New Dance Horizons’ Robin Poitras, and Vancouver-based Susan McKenzie, with original music by the iconic Candian composer Gordon Monahan. This performance will conjure the wind through the use of flowing silk dresses which billow and twist at the dancer’s command, echoing the dances of Loie Fuller from the turn of the last century. This performance at the MacKenzie will also kick off the weekend of Spiraling Forces Festival events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the tornado and celebrating the beauty, power and magic of prairie wind. For more information on festival activities around Regina visit spiralingforces.ca.

This popular bienniele exhibition and fundraiser showcases our community’s creativity and commitment to support the arts.

The artworks chosen for this year’s Art in Bloom exhibition are from a recent donation by John Noestheden, in memory of his wife Kate Davis. Noestheden is a well-known artist and Davis was the former Director of the MacKenzie. This show is a unique opportunity to see exceptional pieces of art, which the couple personally collected, and gives gallery-goers a special insight into their art-inspired lives.

Artists create colourful floral interpretations in response to works in the exhibition. Their exquisite floral masterpieces will be on view to the public, free of charge, from May 10 to 12 during regular Gallery hours. They are also a highlight for guests attending the lunch and fashion shows.

Inuit SculptureApril 21, 2012 to February 17, 2013

Since 2006, the MacKenzie’s collection of Inuit art has grown by over 60 objects, thanks to substantial donations from William Vancise and Sybile Tremblay, Gerry and Frances Nelson, Sadie Ratner and Grant and Mary Armstrong.

This exhibition celebrates the contributions of these contemporary Saskatchewan collectors and the diversity of Inuit sculpture.
