AT THE LYRIC THEATRE

THIS IS YOUR PLAYHOUSE - COME AND PLAY WITH US HERE

The Lyric has a reputation for producing great theatre but is also celebrated for the extensive programme of outreach work and training delivered by its Creative Learning department.

Marking the opening of the new building in 2011, the late Brian Friel wrote “This is your playhouse - come and play with us here.”

In addition to the numerous Drama courses we run in the theatre, our facilitators travel to schools and colleges across Northern Ireland supporting teachers and students.

We work with the National Theatre in London and the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, ensuring local amateur actors and youth theatres learn from some of the best practitioners in the country.

Classes in Acting and Audition Technique support students applying to Drama

School, while visiting tutors from notable establishments in the UK and US inspire their ambition.

Theatre can change attitudes and lives: our recent schools tour of a play about young people and crime, Blackout, was watched by over 4,000 pupils, involving young men with experience of prison life urging them to make more sensible life choices.

We engage with people in their own communities – people already hooked on theatre and those eager to get involved – inviting them to come to their playhouse and play!

Full details of all our projects can be found at www.lyrictheatre.co.uk/creative-learning or follow us on Twitter @LyricLearning

Creative weekly Drama classes for 4-18 year olds.

Taught by our team of experienced facilitators in a professional theatre environment, these engaging workshops develop acting skills and all round confidence.

THEATRE SCHOOL

‘I used to be quite shy but since starting my theatre school class I feel more confident and have made more friends.’ Molly ‘At the Lyric Theatre School, we are in a building where professional actors work. We get to see the different sets and props being used for the shows and learn about all the different things that happen before a play is performed to an audience.’ Felix ‘The facilitators create a really positive environment in which we can learn from each other; there is a real sense of community within the class as we are all improving on our skills together.’ Innes

For Kids in Control, disability is regarded as a creative opportunity!

Our partnership connects the professionalism of the theatre to the wider community, promoting access for all in an environment that is fun and disciplined, secure and supportive.

KIDS IN CONTROL

Considering a career in acting?

Workshops in voice, movement and Michael Chekhov technique challenge the resilience, robustness and determination of 18-25 year olds investigating opportunities of working in professional theatre.

DRAMA STUDIO

“I thought third level education was out of my league, but Drama Studio pointed me in the right direction and I’ve never looked back. The support I received was fundamental in getting me into one of the best Drama Schools in the country. I’ll be forever grateful: this is the best training course in Northern Ireland for aspiring young actors!”

DAVID CRAIGROYAL WELSH COLLEGE OF MUSIC AND DRAMA

“If it weren’t for the Lyric Drama Studio, I probably wouldn’t have got on to the BA Acting course at The Lir Academy. The weekly workshops pushed me to work beyond my comfort zone and I will always remember the skills I learned. I would recommend this course to any young person who wants to audition for Drama School and pursue acting as a career.”
