AT THE HELMDear Fellow Members of RSYC,
Another year has gone by, we are now in the first quarter of 2020. We have completed the Breakwater and the reconstruction of H, I and J Berths successfully in May 2019 at the cost of approximately $5.37M. We are looking forward to comfortable berths for yachts at RSYC and the new berths generating the much-needed income to shore up our club finances. The Gymnasium is also extended and is free for Members.
NOTE ON FINANCIALSWe have closed the financial year-end as at 31 December 2019. An independent audit is scheduled to begin last week of February 2020. Audited financial statement will be included in our 2020 Annual Report.
Based on the unaudited FY2019 financial results, the overall Income & Expenditure Account for FY2019 showed a Total Operating Surplus before depreciation of $1.47M. After depreciation, we are expecting a deficit of $1.69M. This loss is more than what we have budgeted for 2019. Please refer to the financial numbers on the next page for the various departments’ performances. We have been operating at a deficit of more than a million dollars for the past few years and Management have been requested to see how we can improve the bottom line. Management is asked to look at all avenues to increase revenue from all departments especially in the F&B, Room, Marine and Membership in order to achieve the budget for 2020.
CLUB LEASE Our club lease is due to expire in 2027 which is a short 7 years from now. We need to work extra hard to improve our club reserve to be able for us to sustain our move forward for a lease renewal for the next 30 years. We are now in a similar
position 25 years ago and it is time for us to think of our Club’s future. Let us all work together to see our journey through the next 30 years.
CLUB PATRONAGE From the numbers we are seeing, it seems that members are patronizing the club less frequently as compared to previous years, the Club seems less crowded nowadays. There might be multiple reasons why you are not visiting the Club but I will urge all members to please support the Club. It is after all our own Club. I am sure we do not want our Club to be patronized by more non-members.
Our F&B department’s revenue was still below budget by a substantial $500,000. Room’s revenue has increased but below budget. Marine’s revenue has also increased but below budget. Patronage of Club Events and Activities has gone down and this has led to the cancelling of events. For this department, we are running a deficit of $110,000.
Commodore’s Day is scheduled to be held in June and the RSYC Regatta will take place in July. The Annual Dinner & Dance will also make a comeback later this year. We look forward to your support. Do look out for more details of these on the RSYC website, e-Newsletter and posters around the Club
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTI would like to express my gratefulness for the support that our members have contributed in the past year to make the Club the thriving community that it is today. My wish for 2020 is for all members to continue supporting the Club by regularly participating in upcoming events; patronize its facilities, F&B outlets and accommodation.

GENERAL MANAGER’S NOTE
Dear Members,
Time flies and we are now stepping into the second quarter of the year. Everyone’s minds are now on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic and understandably so as it has affected our life and the global business economy. In light of the latest situation surrounding the COVID-19, we would like to assure you that the Club is taking a strict stance to protect the health and safety of all Members and staff alike. The Management believes that it is important to remain vigilant at all times.
As such, with the recommendation from MOH for the public to avoid crowded places, all Club-organised events will be cancelled or suspended till further notice. This cancellation also applies to Private Event Bookings and The Club will send out specific communication to the affected Members. We appreciate your support and understanding as we work to prioritise your safety.
The Club has also put in place precautionary measures to keep the COVID-19 at bay such as compulsory temperature checks at the Club’s entrance and the completion of travel & health declaration forms for Members and Guests entering The Club. Members
or guests who have visited Mainland China or have had prolonged interaction with guests from Mainland China are advised not to visit the Club. For your convenience, hand sanitizers can be found around the Clubhouse and masks are available at the Front Office. We encourage Members to practise good hygiene and safeguard their health. The Club has also stepped up on disinfectant cleaning throughout the Clubhouse.
All Club staff needs to be temperature-screened twice daily and will not be reporting for work if unwell. You can read more information about the Club measures that has been implemented and ways to protect yourselves on page 6 & 7 of the magazine. We seek your cooperation to work together to make the Club a safe and pleasant place to be in.
On a happier and positive note, we are pleased to share that The Club has obtained ISO certification in January 2020. ISO certification certifies that a management system, processes, service, or documentation procedures have all the requirements for standardization and quality assurance. With the ISO certification, RSYC is committed to deliver quality service to meet both members’ satisfaction and regulatory requirements.
RSYC MISSION STATEMENTTo build upon our rich tradition as Singapore’s premier yacht club, member-owned and affordable, and providing the best sea sports facilities with excellent amenities.
Lastly, I would like to personally call upon members to stay calm during this epidemic period. Life should still carry on as usual and please be assured that The Club will provide regular updates on all measures The Club puts in place to protect the community as the situation evolves. We look forward to your continued support and hope to see you and your family around the Club.
Warm Regards,
CLAUDIO SCHETTINOGeneral Manager Republic of Singapore Yacht Club

Ms Lorraine and Mr Graham Byfield, Members of Royal Naval Yacht Club visited RSYC on 13th February 2020 to learn more about the history of RSYC. Mrs Bradburn shared an interesting story with us about Mr Max Blake. Max Blake who was Commodore of RSYC in 1931 and the first winner of the Sir Thomas Liption cup came to Singapore from his hometown of Woodbridge. He was an active member of RSYC during the 1920s and 30s. He returned to live in Woodbridge when he retired and became a member of the Debne Yacht Club and donated a silver “Singapore Cup” which is still competed for today. Mrs Bradburn plans to report to her fellow club members on her visit in order to encourage more visits to RSYC.
The Deben Yacht Club, a reciprocal club of RSYC, is one of the oldest sailing clubs in the UK having been founded in 1838. Located in Woodbridge, England, it is a small but family friendly club with approximately 450 members. Some of the activities include regular dinghy racing, leisure sailing as well as social events throughout the year. The most important event of the year has to be the annual Regatta held in August. streets and buildings in the sketchbook. He was also the one to have designed the very first logo of Raffles Hotel and has since published 4 books of Singapore sketches. It was an honour for RSYC to host such an amazing person and receive his masterpiece as a momento. We look forward to his next visit to Singapore again.

LUXURY SAILING YACHT FIDELIS
SPECIAL FEATURE
A magnificent luxury 56m, 184ft Superyacht, Fidelis (Latin for ‘faithful’), arrived in Singapore and is moored at Republic of Singapore Yacht Club’s marina for a one-month stopover from 27 January to 21 February 2020, having sailed in from its last port of call, Tanjung Benoa, Indonesia. She is temporarily at a nearby shipyard having maintenance work done before returning on 1st March for a period of 7 days before proceeding to Benoa and then onto Hong Kong.
Some of the RSYC staff had the opportunity to go onboard the luxury yacht and was given a tour by Captain Guy Fraser and First Master Grant Keenan. The crew were extremely friendly and took the time to share their experience onboard SY Fidelis as RSYC staff exclaimed a lot of “wows” while touring the yacht.

AT THE HELMSPECIAL FEATURE
Introduction about SY FidelisFidelis is a beautiful superyacht from the 56 metre series launched by the Perini Navi shipyard in April 2011. The 496-ton custom sailing yacht is registered to the United Kingdom with its home port listed as Douglas in the Isle of Man. Fidelis’ owners wanted to plan the interior arrangements and ultimately the yacht’s LOA to suit their cruising goals. Fidelis is uniquely faithful to her owners’ desire to enjoy more time with their family.
The stylish and comfortable yacht can accommodate up to 12 people and is manned by 10 crew members. It features an owner’s quarters with office and couch ports areas, a generous bathtub, private shower area and a central dressing room. Four guest cabins are furnished with queen-size beds and two Pullmans, en-suite with a large shower, couch and desk area.
Particularly impressive areas of the superyacht Fidelis are its sturdy deck, with two cockpits and a plush interior. The interior has a refined and contemporary style where simple and clean lines are combined with precious materials such as stained walnut, wenge, parchment, maple, teak, marble and leather. With the transom’s ability to open and become a sea-level platform with staircase leading into the water and the vessel’s array of water toys and sports equipment that can be loaded and unloaded through a port side hatch, Fidelis offers everything imaginable for a stay as comfortable, stylish and relaxing as one could hope for, and more.
S/Y Fidelis’s Adventure Captain Guy also shared that S/Y Fidelis never stopped sailing since she was delivered, from the Amazon River to Desolation Island and Australia, rounding both Capes. Her maximum speed is 15 knots and she boasts a maximum cruising range of 13 knots. S/Y Fidelis has brought them to many places including Antarctica and the Great Barrier Reef. The owner does join the crew onboard the yacht almost every month for a week or so and loves to go scuba-diving with First Master Grant who act as their diving leader. The most memorable time for Captain Guy is when they manage to see sharks, whales and dolphins all at one time in the open sea.
RSYC had the pleasure to house such a magnificent yacht. This should give confidence to other superyacht owners that RSYC is able to provide the berthing, marina support and facilities they need. With this, we look forward to seeing more superyachts berthing in RSYC!

CHINESE NEW YEAR LION DANCE PERFORMANCE 26 JAN 2020RSYC welcomed the Lion Dance Troupe on the Second Day of Chinese New Year, 26th January 2020 to usher in good luck and fortune in the Year of the Rat. The Lion Dance Troupe took centre stage at the stroke of 11am as the lions danced to the beat of the drums and cymbals together with the entrance of the God of Fortune. Close to 50 Members and Staff gathered at the Lobby to witness the performance, they were clearly enthralled and entertained by the acrobatic moves of the two lions.
This was followed by the lions performing the traditional custom of “plucking of greens” which involved a dance routine of picking of auspicious vegetables which were hung high up signifying abundance for the year. The lions were then rewarded with mandarin oranges from which orange skin was spat out, representing good luck for everyone present. The fruits were then arranged into auspicious words by the lions before they presented a lucky scroll to Commodore Balakrishnan witnessed by the other Committee Members with wishes of stability and prosperity for the Club.
After the dance performance at the lobby, the Lion Dance Troupe proceeded to different parts of the Clubhouse to shower blessings to all. We wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous Lunar New Year ahead!

NUS SAILING TEAM
Guangzhou Nansha International Sailing Regatta 2019
2019 was an exciting year for NUS Sailing Team. Ending the year off with a blast, our sailors represented Singapore at the 3rd Guangzhou Nansha International Sailing Regatta 2019. Sailing in China was a first for some of the NUS Sailors but that did not affect the determination of these athletes! They put up a great fight and soon became attuned to the sailing conditions.
The sailors successfully clinched the 3rd place for FE26 class and 2nd place in J70 Class! Another impressive achievement by NUS Sailors. Said NUS Sailing Captain Matthew: “The regatta was a great way to measure our sailor’s progress relative to other countries. The conditions were really different from those we were expecting. Fortunately, our sailors gave it their all and were justly rewarded.”
Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2020
NUS Sailing goes to Langkawi! In the winter break, some of our NUS sailors had to swiftly pack up their backpack and set out for Langkawi to participate in the Royal Langkawi International Regatta 2020. With 20 knots of wind at noon with choppy wind-waves, NUS Sailors brace themselves and fought through the glistening waters around the Langkawi Archipelago.

“It was a great experience for our new sailors to gain exposure to sailing regattas and an even better way to recharge before the start of school! Looking forward to more overseas regattas ahead.” – NUS Sailor Chantelle.
NUS Sailing looks forward to the upcoming RSYC Regatta and many more in the years ahead!

BIG BROTHER BIG SISTER TAKES ON BIG TIME RACING
Article contributed by Uncle Jevan of Big Brother Big Sister
The BBBS Group started the 2020 sailing year with the launching of BBBS Racer Program. On top of taking young students on the sailboats to teach values and sustainability, our sailors entered two of our SB20s in the SB20 Asian Pacific Grand Slam 2020 Regatta in February this year.
For many in the BBBS group, this was their very first major regatta. And, in a one design racing class that see both the best national sailors and international sailors competing aggressively throughout the fleet.
We faced variable wind conditions throughout the regatta, from very calm and windless conditions, to roaring 20 plus knots gusty storms. Instead of our regular mentoring and facilitation program, we switched into racing mode, reaching for the optimal lines and that perfect spinnaker hoist on the top mark.
So why did we race on an SB20 in a Team?
Of the many positive benefits that accumulate in our young sailors when they start racing, one of the most important outcomes is the beginning of their journey to become Self Aware. When you train and race with four other team mates and face tiredness, excitement, failure, success, and disappointment to celebration. One really starts to develop Self Awareness with the help of our Team mates and the different
experiences in both training and actual racing.I believe our racers very quickly develop a clear perception of their personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. This in turn allows our racers to understand other people, how they perceive us, our attitude to others, and our responses to them.
As a result, Self-awareness is vital in taking control of your life, creating what you want, and mastering your future. It also helps you choose to how and where to focus your energy, emotions, personality, and reactions.
So this is why BBBS races. The 2 teams came back home to RSYC not only better sailors but also better people. Please come and race with us. Join us as BBBS Racers at RSYC,

THE DEVELOPMENT OF RSYC’S MARINA
RSYC Marina has gone through a lot of development and changes from the Trafalgar Street Clubhouse to Sungei Pandan Clubhouse and the current Clubhouse at 52 West Coast Ferry Road.
For many years, RSYC stood as the lone yacht club for powerboating, sailing and rowing activities. In recent decades, modern marinas began sprouting up, therefore RSYC kept up with the development and transformed itself from the backwaters of the Pandan Creek to the modern marina and Yacht Club that it is today.
For loyal Members of RSYC, you would have remembered the mangrove swamp we were in at the Sungei Pandan Clubhouse which we called home from 1966 to 1999. There were no pontoons and buoys were used as moorings. Boat Owners couldn’t walk to their boats and had to be ferried using a small boat driven by RSYC Staff. As for those who chose to berth on land, the dry stack was only partially sheltered. Speed Boats were also placed on trailers and exposed. The Clubhouse faced a lot of uncertainties and difficulties over moorings and access, as it was constrained by a low bridge and heavy siltation.

RSYC moved to its present location at 52 West Coast Ferry Road in 1999 with a vision of a modern social club with the best facilities and a fully serviced marina. It continues to support and promote its water sports, but its recreational facilities now comprise of a lodge, a swimming pool, two restaurants, two bars, gym, jackpot and karaoke room. In attaining the vision of having a fully serviced marina, RSYC opened its 5-storey vertical Dry Storage Facility for 206 boats in 2012 in additional to the 116 wet berths and storage space for 40 Jet Skis.
Wavescreen was completed in December 2018 which resulted in calmer water around the berths and attracted many boaters back to RSYC. In May 2019, with the increasing number of Super Yachts visiting Singapore, RSYC upgraded its Marina by constructing 11 additional Super Yacht Berths. Ever since thecompletion, RSYC has become one of the favourites for Super Yacht Captains, due to many reasons such as alongside berthing availability, no tide constraints and the modern marina facilities available.
We look forward to welcoming you and your yachts to join us at RSYC as we pride ourselves in providing an unrivalled marina experience, no matter where your adventure takes you.
