These are interesting times. All of us have thought (and with good reason) that Covid-19 has been our major health concern. Last weekend, life proved that there are other things out there that can inflict injury/illness as well, when on Saturday, Principal, Mr Kevin Mooney tripped and hit his back on a doorknob, breaking a rib. On Sunday, Ms Leanne De Zilwa’s bike ride came to an abrupt end when, in her own words, she ‘stacked it’ and broke her arm. Both are still in hospital. I wish them a speedy recovery. Our community and school response to the Covid-19 has been very good overall and I extend my thanks on behalf of all staff for great parental support in what has really been a difficult time. I saw first-hand how much extraordinary effort went into the preparation of work by teachers for their students and the latter mostly engaged well. Now that we are all back to school and things have generally returned to normal, we do expect students to pursue high standards academically and demonstrate an excellent level of behaviour at all times. These non-negotiables directly relate to Building Learning Power [Resilience, Resourcefulness, Reflectiveness and Reciprocity] and our school values [Integrity, Respect and Kindness] MCAS continues to encourage BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) for students and full engagement with Daymap online by both students and parents. Parents find this is an excellent way to follow their child/ren’s progress and help manage academic timelines. You are probably aware that Australia’s Education Ministers cancelled NAPLAN this year so that school leaders, teachers and support staff can focus on the wellbeing of students and prepare for the continuity of education, including working with online and remote learning options, during the Covid-19 crisis. Our school is committed to ensuring our students are prepared for future years’ life and learning and I want to emphasise that only passing at a satisfactory level or above enables eligibility for study in that subject at the senior level. I encourage students to aim high and they will find the Latin motto “Palma Merenti” to be true.

SCHOLASTIC READING WORDS CHALLENGE In Term 1 our school entered a competition with the Scholastic Lexile Framework to aim for a high number of words read by our students. Our School was awarded a $30 Scholastic Book Club Voucher as our Lexile students read ‘an average’ of 30,000 words each. A fantastic achievement! We also had the opportunity to present four of our highest students who had reached our Lexile Term goals. Cooper Philps, Sienna Tomlinson, Isaac Van Driel and James Paech were the award winners and each selected a Book prize. Congratulations! LEXILES AND E-BOOKS As you may be aware, our students now have access to Lexile E-books via the School’s Website. They can now read appropriate levelled e-books selected by their teacher and sit a quiz as they would after they’ve read a hard copy book. These quizzes will be counted towards their reading goal. Other e-books may be selected by the student, however it is important they select the appropriate levelled books to assist their reading development. Quizzes completed outside their level range cannot be counted towards the goal. Many students completed e-book quizzes in the Term 1 holidays; these will be counted towards their Term 2 goal. Please note: Students are to only complete Pro Literacy Tests at school under teacher supervision (these are different to the quizzes). SCHOOL MASCOTS Please meet our new school mascots: Integrity Echidna, Respectful Roo and Koala Kindness. Our social work students, Danielle and April have worked alongside Mrs Fonfe and Mollie Mooney to create a series of episodes introducing our new school mascots. The first three episodes can be views on the Mount Compass Area School Facebook page. There are plans to create an ongoing series of episodes that introduce the new school values to our Junior Primary students. Integrity Echidna, Respectful Roo and Koala Kindness will experience some of the same urges and dilemmas that our Junior Primary students face at school and give alternative solutions for our mascots and students to consider. The puppets have made several visits to our Junior Primary classes and will appear more regularly in other events at school. SCHOOL MASCOT WINNERS With close to 100 entries, all of which earned house points for their house, a shortlist was prepared and winners chosen. Congratulations to those who have their posted photographed below who won 5 points each for their house. Integrity Echidna, Respectful Roo and Kindness Kangaroo have never looked so good. Congratulation to Amber in year 7 who created the winning entry. BUDDY BENCH HAS RE-OPENED The Buddy Bench is now open at lunchtimes. The Buddy Bench is designed to target Junior Primary students (Reception - Year 4) who feel lost or lonely during the lunch break. This term, the Buddy Bench Monitors are from Mr Rix's class. The Buddy Bench Monitors have been trained to help younger students find new friends using activities and equipment donated by the Parents and Friends Committee. The Buddy Bench is located just outside the Green Room. NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES At Mount Compass Area School we have our own local hero! Hannah Henderson has been growing her hair for 2 years, in order to donate her hair to variety SA. Hannah was inspired to start growing her hair after a friend was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. On Thursday 21st May will be the big day where Hannah’s hair will be chopped off. Hannah’s will be chopping off an astonishing 35.5 cm of her hair to be made into wigs for someone that lost their hair due to a medical condition. If you would like to read Hannah’s story and follow her journey and maybe donate to her cause please visit: https://hairwithheart.variety.org.au/fundraisers/hannahhenderson/hair-with-heart Kindness makes the world a better place. BACK TO SCHOOL WITH N22 We have had a very busy start to Term 2! In Week 1 we learned about Anzac Day. Miss Martin read the story Anzac Ted and then talked to us about the different ways that many people remember the soldiers who have defended our country. After listening to the story, we drew a directed drawing of Anzac Ted. Our pictures looked great! We have also been very excited to return to Forest School. We have been building cubby houses, drawing shapes in the dirt and searching for bugs using magnifying glasses. Last week we talked about how the forest changes with the seasons. We noticed that since the holidays, the ground has started to turn soft and that we now have lots of muddy puddles to jump in. It was great fun! Miss Martin’s Reception Class CLASS GARDEN Ms Foster's Year 3/4 class would like to say thank you to Chantal, Duncan and the Jong family for their generous donation of the flowers for the class garden. We would also like to thank Cheryl Minniss from Thrifty Link for the kind donation of herbs and vegetables for our class garden. We are very fortunate to have such generous families and local businesses to support our projects at our school. HASS Students in N20 and N19 have been learning about famous landmarks around the world. For this project, students selected a landmark they were interested in. They then located specific information relating to the landmark. Students were learning skills to use the internet on computers and IPads to find their answers. This included using specific skills and strategies that are needed in learning how to research information. Students have just started a new project on countries in Africa. Each student has selected a country to research to enable them to continue to develop their research skills. Ms Yvette Foster

Canteen staff have introduced new Balfours Pastry Lines to our school menu. Ordering will be available on QKR starting next week.

NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY (NCCD) Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019). Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

year of schooling

category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional

level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools

consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools

develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy). Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au). If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.
